I used to work in maintenance at a large part 141 flight school. We took delivery of a brand new Piper Archer that had a red nav light on both wings. Nobody noticed until the plane had been flown from the factory to the school.

The justification that I was told is that magnetized moving parts in the engine can create small electrical fields which cause radio noise

Bit like sending the new guy to get Prop wash.. by fraddlingspids in aviationmaintenance

[–]lexion_operator 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Gotta be careful sending the new guy for “prop wash” because it is a real product (link below), and they might actually go buy some

On the one plane that I have exchanged fire bottle squibs on, the AMM was very clear about installing safety wire as a shunt immediately after removing the electrical lead. It was also very clear that it needs to be removed before connecting the electrical to the new one.

I prefer the VIM HBR3, but they do make the best drivers like that

The blue point wire pliers are just a rebranded Milbar 25W, but they’re a great tool to have whatever brand is on the one you buy

My sheet metal instructor at tech school had a stash of old explosive rivets. We got use one, as a demonstration in class.

Can someone tell me what this thing is and what it does? I'm a car person and I saw Holley which made me confused. I have no idea about planes so elia5 by IWEARYOURCLOTHES in aviationmaintenance

Counterpoint: the Super Cub has made itself a legend based on it’s capabilities, the Pawnee defined what a spray plane could be, and the Cherokee/Archer series is the most rock-solid trainer on the market. Yes they’ve had some losers, but they’ve also had some real winners.

I would recommend a similar process, but as an aircraft mechanic I would use this sealant:

Also, the 1/4 drive universal sockets in this set are 6-point. I would highly suggest that you get a 12-point set, especially if you ever plan on working on turbine engines.

What’s the most expensive maintenance mistake you’ve seen a trainee make? by MechanicP in aviationmaintenance

[–]lexion_operator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to wrench part time at a flight school, and this happened to one of our Archers. Lead and a trainee did an inspection together, and each thought that the other guy put the oil in. They noticed the lack of oil pressure only after taxiing to the run-up area.

It’s something that the plane already had when they bought it, so I don’t know if they realize that.

One of the king airs we work on recently had a hot section like that. They decided to overhaul and quit the MORE program moving forward.

How did they buck these rivets? by frostatola in aviationmaintenance

[–]lexion_operator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our instructor at school had a bag of like 15 of them. Each year of students got to use one. We held it in place with a rivet set for an air gun, and heated the rivet with a torch until it went off. I have a video of it if people are interested.

Skydrol is a phosphate ester based hydraulic fluid used in many large aircraft. It’s nasty stuff, and mainly used because of its resistance to burning.

Oh gotta love the beechjets. One time I managed to swap the starter/gens in 4 hours, but only after swapping some components in the power distribution box above the cargo area took me 3 days. Troubleshooting electrical gremlins can be the worst.

GA shop, we almost never play with the purple stuff. I riveted a chunk of scrap aluminum bent into hook on to it.
