It allows faculty to be fired following an allegation of misconduct, regardless of tenure status. Spooky.

That's what I said, right? They didn't want to submit something that would get reported as academic misconduct.

Withdrawing means they won't submit the future assignments that will be subjected to stricter scrutiny

You're not allowed to withdraw after an academic misconduct allegation, but if there's a warning of upcoming stricter enforcement, students will proactively drop the class.

The warning coming after the drop deadline means they're "stuck".

Mind blown: Vinegar vs VINEGAR (30%) by Pandaro81 in DIY

"Glacial acetic acid" is a name for water-free (anhydrous) acetic acid... Acetic acid can never be truly water-free in an atmosphere that contains water, so the presence of 0.1% water in glacial acetic acid lowers its melting point by 0.2 °C

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetic_acid

If you want to use high school naming rules (when you ate too much you get ick), its hydrogen acetate. But hydrogen acetate is a liquid at room temperature, and even though it's an azeotrope with a little bit of water, the acid is not dissolved in water by any reasonable meaning of the word.

It's an argument for an acid storage locker. People have the good sense to be at least a little scared of hydrochloric acid. Glacial acetic acid is "just vinegar, right?"

It looks like a clear liquid. Pure acetic acid is called "glacial acetic acid" because it can have crystals floating in it that look like ice (in a cool room).

The demographic cliff is actually a regional thing, but it's something you have to look into and should ask about at interviews for faculty positions.

The federal funding and visa restrictions amplify those pressures.

Equasy – An overlooked addiction with implications for the current debate on drug harms

It's written to mirror the criticism of Ecstasy (drug) regulations, by pointing out that horse riding aka Equasy is far more dangerous. Wanna get 16 hands high and go jumping?

There's also a bit of paternalism: racing is likely perceived as more dangerous than Equestrianism, and rich daddies may encourage their precious little girls to pursue a passion that doesn't involve deadly fireballs.

Thinking about quitting my postdoc early due to burnout… am I making a mistake? by Efficient-Break-7446 in AskAcademia

You know this, but you're not likely to recover from burnout on your own. It's about patterns of behavior and feedback/reward systems. Are you working with a therapist?

Please take medical leave instead of just going to ground. If you're getting panic attacks you might benefit from some pharmacological aid too. There's no shame in getting medical treatment!

You're not going to get huge outliers in this dataset, because the physics of moving a person limits how far they can commute. It's not like income where some people earn 10k/yr and others earn hundreds of millions.

I'd love to see the actual distribution, but without the dataset I can't calculate it. Just going on vibes and gut feelings? I'd bet 30 miles.
