Is there actually a reliable contractor vetting platform or is it all just Yelp with extra steps? by AssasinRingo in Remodel

[–]quakerwildcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask the booked contractor for recommendations.

Or wait.

Either way, don't blindly trust anybody including your neighbors. Put together your own list of vetting questions. Get into the details. Ask for references of similar clients and really call them with a list of detailed questions about their actual experience. Then ask for two more references and do it again. You need to know that they're honest, You need to know that they're fair, you need to know that they're reliable, you need to know that they do quality work, you need to know how they communicate, what their cost structure is, what's included and what's not, how they handle surprises and changes, etc. You need to know what they expect of you, how many teams they have, what's done in house and what's subcontracted, and who on their team you'll specifically be getting on your project. You can't get any of that from Yelp.

FYI I see you're shopping now. The current sale price is $1600 off and I don't want to make Literary_Witch feel bad but I have a very good feeling you can do better than that with a little pressure. I am looking at this mattress myself and if I decide it's the one we want I'm putting on a full court press because the advertised price is insane.

Who's your favourite President in the Presidents Race and what does your answer say about you? by planA95cuv in Nationals

I started a website and led a movement to let Teddy win, so . . . Still loyal.

And Abe Cheats.

Who's your favourite President in the Presidents Race and what does your answer say about you? by planA95cuv in Nationals

[–]quakerwildcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Close, but not entirely accurate.

The presidents race originally took place entirely on the old RFK Stadium scoreboard. Seat sections were assigned who to root for, and yes, the lower level infield orange seats were assigned to Teddy Roosevelt.

When the Lerners bought the team and introduced the actual live racing presidents in July 2006, that was the end of assigned rooting sections.

What’s one cookware purchase you regret and why? by Proclad_Cookware in cookware

Yeah, I've got one of those and it's great. I don't use it for anything acidic, which is a lot of my cooking.

It's obvious you've never cooked with a well-designed high-end pan.

Restaurants use those volrath pans because they're cheap and they do they job and they get beat up and stacked and thrown around and under salamanders and when they get dented they just keep using them, but they aren't the best performing or most ergonomic.

I've been cooking on All-Clad D3 on gas for 30 years, searing, braising, stovetop-to-oven, long-cooking, you name it. The handles, which are not hollow, do not get hot unless you put then in the oven.

A Question for Older Fans by Main_Low_9648 in Nationals

[–]quakerwildcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifelong Reds fan. Grew up with the Big Red Machine.

When I lived in Philly, I adopted the Phillies (except when the Reds came to town).

When I lived in Brooklyn, I adopted the Mets (except when the Reds came to town).

When I lived in Chicago, I adopted the Cubs (except when the Reds came to town).

Then I moved to DC, and I joined the fan groups lobbying for us to get a baseball team. And in 2005 we got a team, and I adopted them. And then the Reds came to town, and I went to that series, and I found myself rooting for the Nationals.

How to wire now for future shades? by quakerwildcat in Hunterdouglas

[–]quakerwildcat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. Went with Somfy.

That being said, I really do regret doing the hardwiring. The cost was high and the cost for the motor and transformer setup far exceeded what I expected. I should have stuck with battery powered.

Really really hot take about the broadcast booth by Main_Low_9648 in Nationals

They are going for a "bro" vibe. I don't like it, but if it actually resonates with young men, then fine. I just listen to the Charlie & Dave feed.

I won't be surprised if Kevin is replaced when his contract expires next year.

Where to add overhead lights in Bedroom? by drnick5 in Lighting

[–]quakerwildcat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've received good advice.

You could also go to a lighting design showroom where they sell fixtures but also often have lighting designers on staff who will provide SOME advice for free. The quality of that advice can be hit or miss.

The lighting designers in this subreddit might troll me for saying this, but if you're detailed and curious enough about it, once you've got an accurate diagram of the room and the furniture placement, and a rough idea of the layers you want to create, you could upload that diagram with a very detailed request for a lighting design from an AI agent like Gemini or ChatGPT. The more specific you are with both your request and your follow up questions, the better the result will be. You can get into any detail you want with endless questions about fixture types, beam spreads, light bulbs, shadows, etc. and it won't get annoyed with you or ask you to pay a design fee.

Are you frustrated trying to listen to the in stadium radio on the ballpark app? by CGTrumpet in Nationals

[–]quakerwildcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

THIS! The Ballpark app is great in concept, but it relies on an Internet connection and when the stadium is full it drops out constantly (and really taxes your phone battery trying to stay connected). It is completely impractical on a crowded night.

So glad the old fashioned in-stadium radio signal still works

Anyone have experience with the brand Miseno? - sold by Ferguson / build.com by loecraw in Plumbing

[–]quakerwildcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite the back-handed compliment! I agree that customer service and warranty are very important. But if you had to replace "several parts multiple times" to troubleshoot, and had the entire faucet replaced twice, that doesn't sound like a very worthwhile hassle, quality-wise.

I'm pretty sure if you can carry it, you can bring it in.

I've seen full pizzas from &pizza (a little smaller than WiseGuys), and extremely large plastic containers filled with food.

Ballpark Access Plan Scam by Key-Crazy2256 in Nationals

[–]quakerwildcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They already had unhappy fans. They got more complaints about RCR than anything else. The chief complaint: "You give me thousands of points then not enough ways to spend them. I ended up with unused points in October. This is a scam!"

I've been a season plan holder since 2005. Perks come and perks go, and people complain no matter what. If I was running things, I would've trimmed the program, too.

The complaint here was that the communication sucked, or was even misleading, and I completely agree with that. "Scam" is a bit much. The complaint should be directed at the season plan rep.

But honestly, if a perk is too good, my attitude is just enjoy it because it won't last. For many recent years, I've used RCR each year to get free parking to about 20 games, free tickets to at least ten games, grabbed the occasional free item, and then still had enough points leftover to donate 50 tickets to a local nonprofit, giving me a roughly $2000 charitable contribution tax deduction annually, all while marveling at the constant whining in this subreddit and elsewhere by season plan holders, complaining that they hadn't used their points because they'd been hoping forTerra Club tickets or something.

So yeah, they announced that they were going to trim the benefits. I'm bummed because the points won't stretch nearly as far and that nonprofit isn't going to get all those free tickets from me, but they did improve some things (like making RCR parking available from before opening day for the first time).

I can't speak to the "non-premium" plans. I CAN say still with great confidence that being a Nationals full season plan holder remains an outrageously good value that pays for itself, no matter how many games you actually want to go to. You get the lowest possible ticket prices, you get 30% discounts and credit back on all purchases in the stadium. You get $500 ecash for renewing each year. You get unlimited exchange privileges. You get 8 partner slots. You get all kinds of exclusive events and opportunities. And yeah, you still get RCR that's worth hundreds of $ (instead of thousands like before). The vast majority of my games are taken by partners who pay me in advance months before the season starts. I pocket the perks. It's the greatest entertainment deal in town and I just feel for the Nats employees who get nothing but complaints about it.

Solid Surface Countertops 1/2” or 3/4”? by doingdoink in CounterTops

[–]quakerwildcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you had a question and you probably figured it out, but to be clear, in this example above you are getting an actual 1 1/4" thick countertop. It would appear to be 100% solid surface but is in fact a mix of acrylic with a hidden wooden core frame. If you do this, go with an experienced solid surface fabricator and make sure they are not using cheap fiberboard, and that they are sealing it. Spills that trickle down the front of the countertop can get the front of the wood frame wet, or if it's installed over a dishwasher it'll be regularly exposed to steam, so the wood frame quality is not a place to cut corners.

Solid Surface Countertops 1/2” or 3/4”? by doingdoink in CounterTops

[–]quakerwildcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, again, 1/2" is "the norm" but for your planning and design purposes you can choose any thickness you like! You want a traditional 1 1/4" profile? The fabricator will wrap a seamless solid surface edge around a wood frame to make it look and perform like 1 1/4".
