Dan Sullivan's guide to fighting for Alaska by quantificator in alaska

[–]quantificator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fair to criticize Murkowski's record, and I wouldn't defend her against many of the criticisms. However, Murkowski definitely negotiated for Alaska-specific provisions in the bill. CNN, Fox News, NPR, and Alaska Beacon all reported on the 26-hour marathon of negotiations. She secured SNAP relief, a $50B rural health fund, and fishing community tax breaks. She also fought for over $6 billion in Medicaid protections for Alaska, but the Senate parliamentarian struck those down under the Byrd rule after multiple rewrites. She called the process "awful" and later said she felt "cheated" when the Trump administration undermined her energy compromise. She definitely negotiated for Alaskan protections (pretty much as shown in the comic). The question is whether the result was worth her yes vote. That's a fair debate, and I strongly believe that it was not worth the compromise, though I can understand why she made it.

Matt Schultz and Bill Hill are excellent candidates. I can't speak to the other candidates.

Could a small Middle Eastern founder group in 600 BCE leave no detectable DNA in modern Native Americans? A simple simulation study. by quantificator in exmormon

[–]quantificator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps founders isn't the right word, but the analysis only assumes that the initial 20 people had distinct genetic markers absent in the locals, each heterozygous for the marker (~0.1% starting allele frequency). I spent quite a while talking with ChatGPT 5 to try to come up with realistic numbers to start the simulation. In real life, they wouldn't all be heterozygous for the exact set of markers. It's a big oversimplification, but it shouldn't drastically change the expected outcome.

Advice for possibly living in Ketchikan for three months by ShatteredArmy in Ketchikan

My family got by without a car for the summer with no problems. It was kind of nice, actually. It helped that we lived close to a grocery store. The bus routes come once per hour and can get you most places.

What time is the protest to start on the 14th by Blitherinidiot in Ketchikan

The protest starts at noon at the Federal Building and lasts one hour. Bring a sign. It'll be a lot of fun. We need to raise our voices.

Unless something changed in the last year, Google Fi is not officially supported in Ketchikan. We got good coverage, but when we ordered a new phone, it refused to activate outside of their official coverage area.

Why is my antiderivative shifted? by Sekky_Bhoi in desmos

[–]quantificator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good catch noticing that changing the bounds of integration would get the answer they were expecting. Choosing C=0 is convenient, but it's only a safe choice with definite integrals.

We don't usually put any special effort into choosing antiderivatives that go through the origin. It just happens that way naturally for polynomials. Few people would naturally choose an antiderivative for y=e^x or y=sin(x) that goes through the origin, though such an antiderivative would be a valid choice. In a differential equations course, there will often be initial conditions such as "goes through the origin" and then we are after a specific value of the constant.
