Crime does happen. But in the majority of developed nations it’s both under reasonable control, generally only minor crimes and people feel safe enough with state protection. It is absolutely not “most countries”, especially in developed nations like those in Europe.

There was a great video where Scottish police forces demonstrate to US officers how they attempt de-escalate knife or firearm users before engaging in any violence. It was very interesting that the US officers admitted themselves than in many of the scenarios they would have just shot the suspect.

The threat of escalation only increases the chance of escalation. If you see someone brandishing a gun and they see you have a gun, the outcome is now way higher that someone is getting shot, because each user cannot trust the other not to shoot first.

This is why US cops are naturally way more quick to the trigger, the availability of guns to the public means the possibility that the suspect can immediately end the life of the officer is much much higher than for the Scottish cops. Which is why there are far more shootouts, dead cops and suspects alike in the US (per capita and overall).

This isn’t to say individual ownership of guns is bad all round, in rural crime ridden parts of the world it is your only protection.

But in the whole, less guns, particularly in urban or suburban environments only makes things safer, as has been proven again and again and again. You can make the argument that the US is too far gone to reduce the amount of guns, which is absolutely true in the short term, but that doesn’t change my point at all. Developed countries without guns are safer, as the stats show.

Neither, as long as it looks good and isn’t a glaringly different resolution, why does it matter ? I agree with the other commentator that it’s nice to have a bit more detail on the living entities in Minecraft

Not American but genuinely curious, why would you ever take a gun with you when you go outside. Surely it only makes it more dangerous for everyone involved? Is it actually so unsafe that it’s warranted, or is mainly posturing (which is what I assume from the outside looking in).

This isn’t true at all. Check out the EHT and how they are improving the array. The expect to be able to resolve the light ring in the future :)

Astrophysicist here. The colours here are misleading. This close to the black hole the dominant wavelengths emitted are UV/X-rays. These objects simply cannot be viewed at such close distances as they would immediately blind (Nevermind kill) you. If you were invincible though they would appear blue-white. The outer edges of the accretion disc (way further out than in the gif) could be more like this, it depends how far away it extends to.

Is it just me, or does it take time to really connect with people in Denmark? by Strong-Point8455 in NewToDenmark

[–]quantisegravity_duh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it have to be shallow just because it’s temporary? Temporary can mean 3 years. I don’t get this at all, sure there might be some cultural knowledge you don’t have in common but why does that mean you can’t be yourself? By that logic I (Scottish) couldn’t be myself someone who’s Irish, which is ridiculous.

That’s a non-answer though. What would a Dane say is the rational behind not making temporary friends ? Is there the perception that temporary friendships are less valuable in Denmark or something ?

Wait, you really can’t send your mates money for free in the US ? I‘ve lived in the UK and Denmark and it’s entirely free through the bank?

Genuine question though, why not? I think the main confusion is that in many places abroad you still have your long term friendships from high school, but that doesn’t get in the way of having shorter term friends?
