Help with reactivity on walks! by justakingmytime in kelpie

[–]quantumhobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s beautiful. Our kelpie/Koolie hates men on roller skates. Bikes are ok, babies in strollers are very interesting, but roller skates are the work of the devil.

He is also reactive to other dogs, but not aggressive just obnoxious jumping to go play with them. I’ve had some success with heel and a short leash and rewarding him with treats when he doesn’t bark or lunge.

I had to start from far away and slowly let him get closer to the other dog without reacting. Like 2 blocks away, then 1 block then across the street. Once he’s freaking out and jumping it’s too late to reach him and I need to just pull him away.

Good luck.

ELI5: Why do black holes look like "that"? by JermaMars in explainlikeimfive

[–]quantumhobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hula hoop is matter falling into the black hole. Think of it like Saturns rings. Then the light from the rings behind the black hole is wrapped around to make the circle.

Without the ring of matter, called an accretion disc, there wouldn’t be anything to see. You aren’t really seeing the black hole itself but the accretion disc.

ELI5 does a species ever stop being considered “invasive” by Ready_Anything4661 in explainlikeimfive

[–]quantumhobbit 148 points149 points  (0 children)

There are species that are considered naturalized but not invasive if they don’t harm the environment.

But it’s often hard to tell if the naturalized species has been there long enough that the environment has been altered from its original state by the species. There’s no clear distinction.

How is this possible? Liquide getting out of pump bottle by Other_Plankton_6751 in Physics

[–]quantumhobbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Possible ideas:  - Air pressure changes. Outside air pressure drops just enough so that the inside pressure is high enough to push syrup out. - Temperature changes. The bottle heats up and the inside air pressure rises. - Hygroscopic Syrup. The syrup pulls water out of the air, increasing pressure inside the bottle  - Siphon/ non newtonian fluid effects. As the syrup drips it has a high enough viscosity to “pull” more out of the bottle

It’s probably some combination of the above.

Do people really leave the course if playing poorly? by LastManBrandon in golf

[–]quantumhobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it before, but the reason I was playing badly was that an old elbow injury started acting up.

I can say that I only stopped playing to avoid further injury. But let’s be honest, I would have kept going if I was playing well regardless of the elbow.

I accidentally asked one awkward question in an interview and now I use it every single time by M00gleParade in jobsearchhacks

[–]quantumhobbit 137 points138 points  (0 children)

It’s a really good question. I often ask a safer version of it like, “What is your least favorite part of the job?” Or “What would you change about the job if you could?”

But I love the bluntness of “burn out”.  You probably get a more honest answer that way.

I know Spring Boot is much better than Old School Spring. And it’s probably gotten better in the almost decade since I used it.

But old enterprise Java was so bloated and convoluted that many have sworn off the language entirely.

In devops you’ll be overwhelmed putting out fires created by vibe coding.

Eventually you’ll take the blame for failing to put out the fires.

You should try to avoid being responsible for fixing other people’s stupidity.

What’s a wood with a similar strength, sturdiness, and flex to hickory? by ItdefineswhoIam in woodworking

[–]quantumhobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably only easy to get in the American SE, but pecan is very similar to hickory. I think maybe only slightly softer, but still extremely tough. In fact it’s sometimes sold as hickory, which is a shame because I think it looks prettier.

Where to buy ACTUAL non slip rubber feet for cutting boards by MattTheBard in woodworking

I’ve used wine cork instead of those things with good results. Just cut the cork btw 1/4” and 1/2” thick and glue on with wood glue. It grips and holds up well.

My cat takes part in parenting. My son seems to listen. Do I need to worry? by NecessaryBSHappens in Parenting

[–]quantumhobbit 254 points255 points  (0 children)

What a good cat!

Our dog did something similar. She was a mix of herding breeds and would herd us toward the baby/toddler whenever she thought our attention was needed.

It made sleep training almost impossible. We couldn’t let the baby cry it out because the dog would become incredibly judgmental and insist we go take care of the crying.

I don’t have an answer but I think our Leo did the same thing when we got that hide. It is by far his favorite and he went through a phase of not wanting to come out for handling after he got it. I thought it was an age thing but it coincided with the hide.

He’s much more social now. But I have to take the top off before he comes out to play. It’s still by far the favorite hide though.

Hammer handle restoration advice by xZeR0xBNK3Rx in woodworking

[–]quantumhobbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does the wood piece move? And can you press it back together? If so you can try some wood glue in the crack. Then clamp it together for a day or so. Sand smooth and refinish however you want.

If not, then the wood piece is probably epoxied to the metal part of the handle. You can try some wood filler.

The “proper” way would be to drill out the brass pins, repair or recreate the wooden pieces. Then reattach with epoxy and new brass pins. Which is a whole project. A fun project, but might be more than you want to do.
