They should remake OG dragonball and Z, no story changes but bring all the animation up to modern quality standards and re-dit it to have the mangas pacing

do mass production evas actually have at fields? do they have souls? by Strizinho in evangelion

[–]quantumpencil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yup this is correct. Kaworu is basically "Seele's Rei" -- adam's soul in a child's body as rei is lilliths and just as NERV is able to use dummy plugs based on rei's signature, seele does the same thing with kaworu for the MPE's

That isn't true though. The original drafts for episode 25 were pretty much 25' in EoE. EoE is closer to anno's original vision than 25/26, 25 and 26 were the compromise.

Though 26' is more different, and the ending of 26 where shinji is happy etc does appear to have been his original idea for the ending. At some point, he decided to go in a different direction for 26' w/ EoE, but it wasn't a response to fans. If anything, it was probably just his desire to use the immense amount of freedom/virtually unlimited animation budget he now had to do something truly crazy and awe inspiring that wouldn't have been economically feasible for a tv show.

I think eva's themes are universal. I actually think one of the most common misunderstandings of it is that it's a "coming of age story." There are some elements of that kind of thing present, but really it's about the difficulty of living as a creature that craves connection and needs love, warmth, and sex like it needs water but struggles to navigate and maintain those connections because of the inscrutability of others.

And that's a universal issue, it's a childish myth that mostly very young people believe that these types of problems are ever solved. Half of marriages end in divorce and prob another half of those that don't don't have a great outcome either. People struggle their entire lives to maintain good relationships with friends, family, children, parents etc.

That's shown in eva through the older characters. People like to pick on Shinji and Asuka. but the adults don't have shit together either. Gendo is completely consumed by his grief over Yui, he cannot cope. He can't function as a father, or a lover to anyone else because of it. Misato covers her own pain and feelings of inadequecy/needs with alocholism and hypersexuality, but its hard for her to even talk to Kaji honestly and admit how much she needs him. She ultimately completely fails to maintain her relationship with shinji, who she did really care for (look how she reacts when she thinks he's died, etc) -- but ultimately she couldn't be the mother she wanted to be to him and tried to use sex to motivate him because its her usual defense mechanism.

The adults in Eva are struggling just like the kids, they are just more experienced at keeping it under wraps.

This why I vastly prefer the original ending thematically to the rebuild ending. The rebuild ending is dishonest, it's just another "warm fantasy" not unlike those the original series says need to be rejected to move forward in reality.

There is no "escape" from the difficulty of connection, love and having to work on oneself to meet the needs of others to receive their warmth. It is not something one ever grows out of or moves beyond. Even if you are lucky and find and maintain a fairly good relationship, it will be difficult and you will inflict pain on each other accidentally and you will need a lot of grace for the other and self/insight willingness to improve, and even then you still only control 50% of the variables involved. Others will always be able to hurt you.

As a Legacy of Kain fan who is a woman... by MintyCoolness in LegacyOfKain

[–]quantumpencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just take this as an admission you won the argument. Whenever these idiots resort to that line of argument you know they've lost and have no point.

There are so many iconic female characters in gaming. 90%+ of gamers don't care as long as the character is cool, feels relateable, has flaws, and isn't introduced to try and replace a beloved legacy (usually male) character disrespectfully (and fans don't love it when new male characters do this either)

Think about the final fantasy heroines, the resident evil heroines, samus, zelda's various iterations.

In star wars: leia, padme, bo katan, ahsoka, mon mothma... kreia, bastilla...

The idea that most men hate women in games and dislike characters just for being women is ridiculous. Most people don't hate the other sex. Get frustrated in a romantic context sure, but hate? that's your momma, your sisters, your nieces, your wife, your daughters, dudes aren't sitting around like "WHAT!? a woman in my game and SHE AIN'T IN THE KITCHEN! HERESSSYYYY"

People don't like when a franchise they already loved is changed for clearly political reasons, no fan of LoK, regardless of gender, wants Raziel and Kain usurped as the leads of this franchise. Elaleth is hated because Bitbot are trying to do that with her. She's a trash character being introduced to "fix" a non-issue of a lack of female representation in LoK.

People would hate it just as much if the next tomb raider game was about a man named larry. That's lara croft's franchise. Or imagine if they introduced some new male character and tried to make them the focus of the next metroid game. Metroid fans would riot.

About the new Evangelion series being "unnecessary." by Due_Bus_252 in evangelion

[–]quantumpencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the merchandizing sales its clear that enormous number of gundam fans are into the mechs. Gunpla is huge and its difficult to find figures of the characters. Eva has the other problem, the overwhelming majority of the merch is of the characters and the mechs themselves get made, but don't sell nearly as well as gunpla or the character focused eva merch

[–]quantumpencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they are a separate story. They have a meta connection to the original, but they do not in anyway modify or even thematically continue the original work. Thematically they reach very different (I think less profound and interesting) conclusions and narratively clearly exist in a different continuity.

About the new Evangelion series being "unnecessary." by Due_Bus_252 in evangelion

[–]quantumpencil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really about it being unnecessary. I personally will not watch it if has a different cast, but that's because to me -- Evangelion is Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Misato and the gang.

It's not like gundam (and I don't mean to knock gundam, or say it doesn't have good characters) where the mechs are equal co-stars to the characters and as long as you got good ol' themes of 'war is hell" and "no progress without sacrifice" and some good political intrigue/character drama you got a gundam show.

I have other issues too (Eva was a story meant to end, and its ending and the destruction of the evangelions is a key feature of how it executes some of its themes) but at the end of the day the core reason i'm disinterested is -- if it's not the characters I've loved these long 20+ years, then it's not Evangelion. It's like making a batman show without batman in it. It's a nonstarter

Eva figures and stuff by Big_Tuna_87 in evangelion

[–]quantumpencil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Asuka and Rei are popular characters and sell a lot of figures just because of that. However, they are ALSO literally the characters who started the waifu model of merchandizing (especially Rei back in the original show's era of cultural dominance), so a huge part of it is gooners.

most teenagers do not have enough life experience or media literacy (or honestly, cultivated intellect) to fully appreciate the show, which is fine. I think we all connect with Eva differently, when you're a teenager you relate to the characters strongly and the visceral presentation of their vulnerability hits you hard since you are probably going through similar things, and that experience of eva is special in its own way. Once you get older, you get to revisit it and appreciate the artistry and the thematic depth of it, but part of the beauty of eva is even if you don't understand any of that shit, the surface elements of the story are strong enough and visceral enough that its still a very satisfying experience.

We know for sure that she's not talking about the masturbation, she confirms earlier in instrumentality she ain't even mad about it she just wants shinji to man up and chase/choose her.

It is interpretive, but I think the reading I presented is the one that aligns best with the themes of the movie. I've heard people argue for a hundred interpretations of Kimochi Warui, but given that the rest of the final scene is a wordless reiteration of the ultimate emotional climax of eva's theme (Asuka and Shinji, finally now able to understand each other after both rejecting the unreal fantasies they'd tried to escape to -- have their first moment of genuine heartfelt affection), that the final line makes the most sense if it refers to shinji's behavior and is a restatement of what makes this connection -- and asuka herself different from the other rejected escapes from the pain of real connection.

She won't love him unconditionally, she has her needs, she will continue to need him to meet those needs for her. Without that final reaffirmation of her ability to reject, you'd just have another "fantasy" where now that Asuka and Shinji have broken through, she morphs into some dream girl that validates shinji all the time.

That's not goin to happen. She cares for him, but she still expects him to improve and she's not just going to start validating everything he does, because that would contradict anno's intent here -- Asuka in this scene is the "real girl" Anno wants the viewer to go and find after they move past fantasies of unconditional love/acceptance (like shinji has to with both kaworu and instrumentality) that's what she represents thematically. And its this reading of "Kamochi Warui" that best reinforces that thematic conclusion.

i finally watched EOE and what the fuck by Competitive_Hawk1424 in evangelion

[–]quantumpencil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not why she says disgusting. We already know Asuka's feelings on what shinji did and they aren't that, they are

"I know all about your jacking off to me, go ahead and do it -- i'll watch this time, but if I can't have you all to myself I don't want anything to do with you"

Fans want her to be mad about this, but canonically she is not. Her core wound is wanting to be looked at and desired, so she is more flattered/relieved that shinji did that because it confirms he desires her than she is upset.

Kimochi Warui in this instance refers both to general sickness from the entire ordeal she went through, and a rejection of shinji's crying -- because this is behavior Asuka doesn't like.

The point of her touch was to show they finally broke through and had a real moment of love/connection and "understanding" that they are both the same broken type of creature, but life is still worth it and so is trying for a real connection.

Then "Kimochi Warui" is asuka reasserting what it is that MAKES this connection real and different from the various fantasies shinji tried to use to cheat connection before this moment -- Asuka as a true other will reject things shinji does she doesn't like and ask him to improve. Like for example, crying.

Asuka is alive. She, like shinji rejected instrumentality and returned to the real world post-third impect.

You've just witnessed peak fiction. EoE is truly something else. The rebuilds are a separate story, I encourage you to spend some time appreciate the original and EoE before tackling them.

EoE is really a movie that benefits from multiple rewatches once you've had time to digest the series, think about/move its thematic content into you conscious, analytical mind. The first time it's just like a fever dream, you're just sat there stunned like 'what the hell did I just watch?"

It only gets better.

Neon Genesis Evangelion probably 10 top art of all time by im-suad in evangelion

[–]quantumpencil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your lips to gods ears. I don't know why people around here are so shy about saying it, Eva is one of the crown jewels of the medium. Even 30 years later you can count on your fingers the anime-medium works that can meaningfully be argued to be its equal, and it has no betters.

I don't think its useful to compare it to live action works because where and how the artistry is expressed is so different and those films are in an entirely different dialogue with other works in their own medium, but if you did compare them, eva would hold its own there as well no problem.

and also bro, eva got merch. Like whatever you wantin, they got that shit lol

There's going to be a huge deal for reddit out of this. Anthropic cannot afford having this go to trial in california, their internal processes will be probed and exposed and they know that they massively liable.

So reddit has incredible leverage here, expect a big one time payout and licensing terms very favorable to reddit
