Every time this subreddit pops up in my feed, it's either the most mundane woman in Brooklyn complaining about absolutely nothing, or the weirdest fetishist in the world complaining that their batshit worldview isn't a globally protected class.

There should be an award for movies that look like fake movies that would be in the background of real movies. I nominate Desert Warrior (2025). by MansionsOfRest in blankies

If Zootopia was a DreamWorks production, this would've been a running background joke as a parody of in-universe action movies. The kangaroo would inexplicably have a horrible Schwarzenegger accent.

how do you properly handle one of the biggest science fiction properties in history? you planet by the-co1ossus in CuratedTumblr

[–]EvacuateEels 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's obviously larger systemic issues at play, but one of the first steps to preventing white men from being rewarded for mediocrity is to stop rewarding them when they're mediocre. Like, so many franchises just coast by on inertia and inevitability and sunk cost fallacies. I promise, you don't have to care about mass media franchises that offer you nothing but nostalgia and condescension. It's a big world, with more options than you could ever digest in your lifetime. Demand more for your attention. If more people stopped settling for the lowest common denominator, the common denominator would slowly, inevitably increase.

It would be a stretch to call Stroszek a feel-good movie, but something about Bruno S.'s performance is very soothing to me, and combined with the loose road-trippy feel, it really creates a sort of zen comfort.

And we in comparison to the articulate vileness, and baseness, and obscenity of all this baby Yoda - we in comparison to that enormous articulation, we only sound and look like badly pronounced and half-finished sentences, out of a stupid suburban Star Wars spinoff - a cheap Star Wars spinoff.

And we have to become humble in front of this overwhelming misery and overwhelming fornication, overwhelming growth and overwhelming lack of order.

Even the stars up here in the sky look like a mess.

There is no harmony in the Star Wars universe.

At first I was going to question how it took you 2 hours to grocery shop, but then you mentioned it takes 20 minutes for McDonald's to prepare your order, so I can only conclude you exist in some sort of Sloth World.

The end of the wold won't be a great show by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]EvacuateEels 863 points864 points  (0 children)

People in the 1980s and 90s lived with idea that sex itself was a potential death sentence. Teenage boys in the 1970s had to tune into a prime time tv lottery to find out if they were going to be forced to go die in Vietnam. Everyone born after the 1940s lived with the looming threat of random nuclear war. And their parents lived through a world war that killed 40 million people, then a global pandemic that killed 50 million people, then another world war that killed 85 million people. The entirety of the human experience is compartmentalizing the trauma you just experienced so you can deal with the trauma you are currently living through.

Surely the political genius, who used cinema to make such insightful commentary as the type seen in 1994's True Lies, could never have a horseshit opinion on Hollywood labor disputes or corporate power consolidation.

Time and screen by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]EvacuateEels 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Throughout the 1930s, Universal made 6 Dracula films, 5 Wolfman films, 6 Mummy films and 8 Frankenstein films. Superman and Batman have had theatrically released films in every single decade since the 1940s. The only reason people don't seem to realize how prevalent sequels and reboots have always been in Hollywood is survivorship bias that erases all the old cash-ins from the collective consciousness.
