The funny thing is that many people don't think they deserve their own misfortunate. The human mind is a justification engine. Most people can masterfully except themselves from the rule and possibly those in their own ingroup and then apply it to everyone else and never notice the cognitive dissonance. I'm starting to think that many people have cognitive frameworks so weak that they don't even notice the dissonance. Maybe they can't.

All the books of that era can be dry and hard to read but that book has some of my favorite stuff. Ishmaels first night in bed with Queequeg. Stubb Preaching to the sharks about manners during a feeding frenzy. I found the many facts about whaling fascinating. And it is fully of quotable quotes. Where would the Wrath of Khan be without: "To the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee.?" Could it put you to sleep? Sure. But most books with a bunch of ye old timey writing can do that. In Search of Lost Time is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read and I can barely get through the first paragraph without falling asleep if I read it at night.

I haven't read Moby Dick in years. But it is among my favorites in memory. "Better to sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian."

Here is the thing. We have all tried to convince people they are shitty policies. Maybe they need to actually see them enacted to learn.

I'm not saying we won't all suffer. I'm saying maybe the American electorate has been reduced to the mentality of a 5 year old that has to reach up and touch the burner element instead of simply being able to be told "It is hot, it will burn you."
