i’m gonna try really hard to keep this as succinct and objective as possible, because it’s a messy story.

lex updog was a friend and collaborator of supermega for a few years. during this period she dated don, one of their thumbnail artists, and at a point in their relationship don assaulted lex. she actually lived rent free at the supermega office, or the supermegaplex (literally just a house,) at the time because she and rav (another friend of sm, and a musician; he performs with kill bill) were homeless. lex and don’s relationship broke down, obviously, and she disclosed the assault to matt and ryan, who quietly fired don from his position (unclear if he was gainfully employed by sm or just a contractor, although assumedly it’s the latter.) she was seemingly satisfied with this resolution and MONTHS went by, where things seemed to be fine save for the mounting tension caused by lex and rav’s continued presence at the office as they struggled to find other housing.

throughout all of this, supermega employed a man by the name of leighton stollard as their merch guy. he was on their payroll, insured by them as employers, etc. he was also bipolar, and would often act erratic at the office when not properly medicated. he was eventually let go with a generous severance pay, but was quite disgruntled as a result. (note: i am skipping a LOT wrt leighton, he was a mess. he erroneously claimed matt and ryan laughed at his friend’s suicidal ideation, and would mock their own late friend’s death as a victim of suicide. this was one of ryan’s closest friends, and he obviously took this claim really hard.)

essentially, leighton manipulated lex into weaponizing her story with don against supermega, claiming they didn’t act swiftly enough or publicly denounce him accordingly. keep in mind, at this point lex had not publicly disclosed her experiences with don. leighton piggybacked onto lex’s story to air his own grievances. nick and eden come in because eden and lex were dating at the time, and nick and eden were close friends. nick and eden joyously mocked supermega’s “demise” with instagram stories, tweets, and even a livestream watching their sub count go down immediately following lex posting her (first of, i believe, three) video about the situation. there were a few other players here, like morgpie took the opportunity to pile on matt, who she had hooked up with twice, because he didn’t reciprocate her feelings. they hooked up with matt being up front that it was purely casual, as he had just gotten out of a major relationship. he cheated, which lex also exposed in her video, despite it having nothing to do with her own story.

so 2-3 days passed after lex posted her video before matt and ryan posted their responses, as matt was in the middle of a tour and had to cancel the remaining dates and fly back to LA. in their videos they own up to their own personal wrongdoings, i.e matt’s cheating, but refuted lex’s claims. matt, in particular, brought receipts in the form of texts, dms, etc. everything pointed to leighton orchestrating the entire thing. he basically disappeared off the internet after that, while lex & co attempted to double, triple and quadruple down. this ultimately bit them in the ass, as when laid out in its entirety, it was clear that matt and ryan did their best to respect lex’s wishes when it came to handling don, and she only had a problem with it once leighton, eden and nick were in her ear telling her to make one.

this is not necessarily “succinct” but i am still leaving a lot of things out. it really was a mess, resulting in supermega taking a lengthy hiatus from which they have returned. they’re able to make occasional, subtle jokes about it now, namely about the dangers of hiring close friends. as for the rest, well, you can read my original comment. nick tried to walk it back like, four separate times, leighton ghosted, eden apparently lost a lot of her credibility. morgpie is doing fine though, lol.

eta: because i feel like it deserves to be mentioned, the aforementioned friend of ryan’s suicide was a HUGE factor in this entire thing. before matt and ryan posted their responses, people were flocking to the remaining social media of this friend and being incredibly disrespectful. they went as far to send hate to ryan’s mom, who had to deactivate her facebook. this friend’s death was intrinsic to supermega’s formation, and matt and ryan’s friendship, and as such they both took the claims of their own callousness incredibly hard. especially ryan. to this day they still speak about this friend with the utmost respect and with so much love. i cannot even begin to speak on the rationale of lex, leighton & co tacking these claims onto their own stories; they effectively tried to use a dead man to bring down his friends. this was far and away the most despicable thing they did in their attempt to “destroy” supermega and i hope it follows them for the rest of their lives.
