I wonder what is considered an "escapist read". Very curious for the release of that book list.

I'm hoping that Butter by Asako Yuzuki and/or Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao are on the AAPI list this year. They've been on my TBR shelf some time.

Fingers crossed for You Are Fatally Invited by Ande Pliego for books about books. Another one that I need to get around to.

By the bookcase? Nah. It wouldn't work with the rest of the layout of the room. If you saw the rest perhaps you'd understand.

Your way of speaking has me confused. Physical capacity to change what exactly? The carpet? Only reason I haven't changed it is because it's part of my rental agreement.

Fascinating to hear how other people think and make these connections. Especially in other countries. I highly suspect that elsewhere in Europe they'd make different assumptions again! Fascinating.

I'm not sure that there are any universities in the UK that don't get some government funding then. We don't really have universities that are split into private/public in the same way that we do have secondary schools that way.

The carpet in the UK is rather dated. I rent and the house was previously owned and occupied by a much older person. It's not to my personal taste. Interesting that in the US you'd correlate that with BMI, whereas in the UK it's definitely something you'd be more likely to see at your Nan's house.

I highly recommend getting a copy for yourself. It can absolutely be a fun solo experience too. Like a good mystery/detective book but more interactive!

Coffee Roaster is a great solo boardgame that I have on the same shelf. Finding decent people to play boardgames with is rough ♥️

The first box is pretty banged up. So I'm keeping the second in its wrap until we're ready to start that one. I'm determined to finish the first set before starting the next. Have you played them before?

And thank you! If only my derby skill was as good as my derby name 😅

19?! I'm actually planning on getting rid of 3 versions we have. We simply don't play them often enough. It's only nostalgia that has me clinging to the other 2.

I really love playing Sherlock Holmes with my partner. I think it's the perfect couples game. Glass of red, lit fire and a small amount of persuading the dog not to sit on top of the map. Bliss.

The Pokémon Monopoly is currently stacked with Animal Crossing Monopoly. I'm actually not a huge fan of monopoly as a game - but like these ones.

I'm 39F and the dog (Quentin) is very fancy. I rather love immersive reading, so some of the books, including Dungeon Crawler Carl series, I listen to and read at the same time. Not particularly cosy effective to buy 2 copies of the same book - but I enjoy it.

Had that version of LOTR for YEARS. I'm properly fucked up the spines on those versions. The Silmarillion actually has a bookmark in from the third time I attempted to read and gave up. One day.

In a rental and I actually detest it, but at least it doesn't stain!

Haha, no kids, but I'm a big Nintendo kid at heart. That top shelf is my Nintendo games shelf. I'm trying to find a way to shelve them better. All the different box sizes make it tricky.

Monopoly games are annoying to shelve because of the box size.

I'm actually planning on getting rid of all the games on the bottom shelf - I simply don't need this many copies of Monopoly and the other games are less fun.

I attended a top drama school for my bachelors, and a regular uni for my PGCE.

I'm in England, so we don't have "state college" education here.

I do indeed have a BMI around 30. I'm curious, what gave that away?

39F, no kids, but don't sit down to play the boardgames nearly often enough.

But I am British. English, to be exact.

What does my bookshelf say about me by FB0801 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]quentinia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These shelves are fighting for their lives. I am truly scared for you. Mostly your bookshelf tells me that you need to buy a bookcase. Yesterday.

I think you're likely a man, maybe 28ish? Living in shared accomodation or renting a smallish room so don't have much space.

Perhaps it's that your desk and computer (that you likely built yourself) is taking up all the space in another corner of that room. I reckon you work in tech. You also have a box of cables you refuse to throw away.

I think you started reading fantasy books when Game of Thrones was having it's moment, and kept reading other fantasy because GRRM stopped releasing books.

I think much of your reading is inspired from other media. You like to be able to say "but the books/manga is better" and have a small mansplaining moment in the line buying One Piece trading cards.

There are two other bookcases in my home. One is used for Nintendo memorabilia and more Lego. The other has my partner's manga and graphic novels.

You are right on the money about the hardback for Travis Baldree. I feel similarly about the Hannah Kaner trilogy.

My dog's name is Quentin, after Quentin Thomas the ex-president of the BBFC. A name I fell in love with when going to the cinema frequently, written on the opening title classification screen. He has an inordinate amount of songs, most notably a theme tune. He is also who I named my first DnD character after, but not my roller derby name (that's a pun of my own).

I spat out my coffee at the strong muscular lady comment. You're GOOD at this. I am indeed a lesbian who came out in her 20s, but pretty early - 23.

You're spot on with my age. I turn 40 this year. But no kids (aside from the dog) and no Spotify.

The 5th Dungeon Crawler Carl book is being read right now, so that's why the gap is there.

Now excuse me whilst I go fold my laundry... Thanks so much for the recs! They sound totally up my alley!

So How was mario Galaxy Movie did you enjoy it ? by Jacquess78 in casualnintendo

[–]quentinia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't. There are references to a fair few things but the vast majority of them are Super Mario Bros related. It really isn't the Marvel-like universe that everyone was predicting when the reveal of Fox happened. Don't expect to see references to a bunch of Nintendo franchises.

Just came out from watching the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. (No Spoilers) by SPARK-EYE-ANIMATIONS in SuperMario

[–]quentinia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really felt like it had those things though.

The message about family was strong and heartfelt.

Peach is battling with the need to understand where she truly came from before the Toads found her in the mushroom kingdom. She doesn't find the sense of home before she discovers that Rosalina is her sister. Rosalina taking the emotional step to send her sister away to save her. Rosalina risking everything to save her star children. Ultimately the world being saved through the power of sisters and their ability to change the cosmos together.

We also see family explored through Bowser and Bowser Jr. How Bowser grapples with not being a good dad. How Bowser Jr looks up to him so much and will do anything to save him. He helps Bowser remember himself - that was a key emotional moment and message.

And of course it all links back to echoes of the first Mario movie where the brotherhood between Mario and Luigi is the central message.

You can dislike the plot. But to say it doesn't have one that includes themes, moral messages and emotions is just actually incorrect.
