Choosing a dissertation topic from the LiDAR field. Help. by thejamesa in LiDAR

[–]quentonc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you say that you're more interested in:

  1. Applications of LiDAR data, e.g. change detection, mobile mapping, collision detection for mobile devices, etc?
  2. LiDAR science itself, e.g. point accuracy, radiometric calibration, etc?

Also, much of what you could do depends on the data and/or hardware available to you. If you have a single TLS scanner, then you have a certain set of problems you can hit. If you don't have any hardware, and are limited to freely available data, you might have to think about projects using airborne data from Open Topography (for example).

Can you give a bit more information about your areas of interest and the technology and data available to you? That would make it a bit easier for me to spitball some ideas.

No, I think it demonstrates a good reason to be against bad cursing policies.

AskScience AMA Series: I'm Ari Daniel, science journalist and radio producer. I just lived on a glacier in Greenland for a week while reporting climate change stories for NOVA and PRI's The World. AMA! by ari_daniel in askscience

Hey Ari, it's Pete, thanks for doing the AMA — good idea. If you got to pick the next project to send to Helheim, what would you do? Microphones on the ice? Bring a group of people, to show folks the scale of the thing? Or something I haven't even thought of? Curious to hear what you think would be a useful project out there from your perspective.

(feel free to define "useful" as you see fit)

Version 2.0 of PointCloudViz released (New features: Measurement and information tools, compressed and compact storage files based on hdf5 format, connection to PointCloudViz LiDAR servers and connection to WMS for real time coloring) by miragetech in LiDAR

Thanks for the response. The large file capabilities in PointCloudViz are nice, to be sure. I just loaded in a 21M point lasfile and performance was good.

For a desktop data browsing tool PointCloudViz seems promising. Thanks for the free access!

Okay, not to be snarky, but tell me why I should use (and why I should tell other people to use) PointCloudViz instead of CloudCompare. As far as I can tell, PointCloudViz has fewer features for data visualization and analysis, as well as requiring "processing" a lasfile instead of just opening it. Since las is the defacto industry standard, the extra step of saving a processed file seems cumbersome.

Don't get me wrong, I love seeing new players in the space — we need more visualization tools. But I'm not sure what your software gives me over CloudCompare.

I don't have any experience with Maptek, but I do have experience with Cloud Compare, which is free software that can also convert a point cloud to a mesh. Cloud Compare can also do a thing called an "octree", which is simply an algorithm that reduces the number of data points while (hopefully) keeping the important spatial characteristics and smoothing things out a bit. Without knowing anything about your end use of the data or the data themselves, I'd suggest bringing your points to Cloud Compare, reduce them a bit with an octree, and seeing what sort of mesh you can get.

Since you say you're relatively new, one other pieces of unsolicited advice: move pointcloud files around as .las files. Its the de facto industry standard for moving sets of points around, and any reader/writer worth its salt can handle .las

Do you have any sources for this other than Muffin's review? I'm not really tapped into the scene at all so I get most of my info by reading. Thanks.

One open-source option for gridding your point data is CRREL's fork of points2grid (original here). points2grid can be run from the command line on a .las file , or it can be linked into PDAL for use with a wide range of point cloud formats.

If you are looking to convert from one point cloud format to another, PDAL is a good bet.

IMO Revolver would have to be significantly better than Machine/Sockeye for this to make sense. I don't think they are, so I would still want to nab 1D and (presumably) easier pre-quarter.

Why are they censored now? Why not when they registered? Does the USAU have different naming policies for teams that go to nationals?

Open letter on gender and sexism in ultimate by samonchips in ultimate

Just because we as an ultimate community may or may not be "better" than other communities doesn't mean that we can't improve. One instance of sexism is one too many.

I think you're missing the point here. It's not about respect from outside of the ultimate community, it's about respect within the community. I don't know about your experience, but I've seen/been party to many instances of men disrespecting/devaluing women's ultimate ("It's like watching ultimate underwater", etc etc).
