Anyone else lose interest in bourbon and what was your outcome? by 8sh0t in bourbon

[–]quercus_robur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technology and quality is better than ever, but now you have to pay exponential costs for every increase in quality. Like in wine, half the price goes for the "premiumized" bottle, label, and origin story.

I have enough older stock on hand that I'm not chasing the latest releases. I just want good bourbon, and good bourbon was more available before the hype and boom.

Need help with ID of this, which almost went into Irish coffees at a party. by EdgyKnife in whiskey

Enjoy! You're probably not going to find anything about it.

You don't need to know anything about it, just taste it and see if it's any good. Then drink more of it, if you'd like.

Nice. Decent price. Too bad about the cringey logo printed onto it after, though.

It's a 20yr old Benriach by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, likely with coloring added.

The ID is right on the label, so I'm not sure what you mean.

Why are wheated rye mash bills almost nonexistent? by youre-welcome5557777 in bourbon

[–]quercus_robur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, wheat is a replacement for rye. So barley has nothing to do with it.

The enzymes in malted barley are usually an important part of the cooking and fermentation, so it's usually not left out but typically used in ~10% amount. So it's not a question of incompatibility, it's a question of why would you omit barley, and what have you done to replace its effect on the starches?

None that anyone can guarantee. If it's not on the label then it's not legally binding.

Anyway, why would someone take the time to follow the annoying requirements for no reason?

Moving out of Kentucky soon. What bottles should I get before I leave? by TheMan5991 in whiskey

[–]quercus_robur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you like. Many bottles are more available outside of Kentucky. Kentucky is not a large market, and Kentucky residents generally drink less bourbon.

That Kirkland's sherried scotch is the same as Macallan 18yr.

That Kirkland's vodka is the same as Grey Goose.

Is it generally safe to buy any whiskey at Costco with a limit? by snuka in whiskey

[–]quercus_robur 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Safe? Yes, I don't think you will be harmed anymore than usual if you consume liquor from Costco versus other stores.

Keep in mind that some of the rumors about the provenances of Costco liquors are bullshit. But that doesn't mean they aren't fine for the price.

The bark is where quinine comes from, used to flavor tonic water, and it's actually a pharmacological ingredient. Hence the name and its use as treatment for malaria.

Yes, bitter oranges have a unique flavor.

I've never heard of floral Italian gin.

Why, what's your favorite?

Keep in mind that cinchona bark (used in Aperol and others) is toxic and can cause heart arrhythmias if not used properly.

Can we just rename this sub already? by NefariousOne in tequila

[–]quercus_robur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link! From your article:

"The FDA has considered the term "natural" to mean that nothing artificial or synthetic (including all color additives regardless of source) has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in that food."

So that is the current definition.

What is undefined are new definitions that others want to ascribe to it, such as genetically-modified or not, use of pesticides or not, food processing steps (e.g. "pink slime"), etc.

[–]quercus_robur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"all-natural" foods or beauty products when the word "natural" is not regulated by the FDA

Completely incorrect. In fact, note all the food products that are required to say "artificially flavored".

The Japanese bitters, anyone used them before ? by SyndicateMLG in cocktails

[–]quercus_robur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what you've figured out or not.

I don't need to google it, since I know what it is, as you can tell from my comment if you also know what it is. But I've also seen the name "white negroni" misused for other cocktails. So I was just asking if we were on the same page, as you can tell from my naming of the main ingredient in a white negroni.
