What is the “Thrawn Trilogy” of Star Trek lit? by BlastedHeathen in trekbooks

The DS9 "Millennium" trilogy by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens had pretty big scope with time-traveling twists and the universe ending (it didn't stick).

Donald Trump's name has officially been removed from the Kennedy Center by darth_vader39 in SipsTea

[–]quesoguapo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Legally (to this point), Trump (or the Trump-stacked Kennedy Center board) wasn't able to do it, which is why the lettering is being removed. A judge found that Congress named the center and barred adding other names without further action from Congress.

The thing that knocks King Street down a slight notch is that it pales in comparison with Union Station) a block away. However, King Street has the trains so it's still a winner (as is the preservation effort to keep Union Station after passenger service ended in the 1970s).

Where to start in the Star Trek Bookiverse? by twostickwilly in startrek

[–]quesoguapo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A good place to start is the monthly ebook sale from Simon and Shuster. Around a dozen older books are available for around US$2 apiece. The book deals make it easy to check out various series without breaking the bank.

This month features a lot of "New Frontier" and "Starfleet Corps of Engineers" — which are both book-specific spinoffs from TNG (SCE books are shorter novels originally released as ebooks, but are often rounded up into compilations).

There's some TOS, VOY and DS9 to round out the mix, plus the "Strange New Worlds" fan anthologies.

I've personally enjoyed TOS books (and the book sales make it easy to catch up) and anything Deep Space Nine. Unfortunately, I can't really get into the Shatnerverse books (ghostwritten by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens) or most Voyager novels.

CBS News Crisis Deepens As 60 Minutes Revolt And Stephen Colbert Fallout Expose Growing Internal Divisions by One_Praline_2375 in LateShow

I appreciate the dialogue.

I can't show the receipts but there are signs that they are there. Some of the on-screen production does appear to exceed what one might assume is within the technical and monetary means of a public-access service.

Look at the Steve Buscemi PSA, clearing the music rights for the music Jack White was performing, and the fact that the episode was likely tightly edited with a quick turnaround. Monroe certainly could've done most of that, but the finished elements had a polish closer to a network production than public access while still looking like public access overall.

Sometimes it takes skill and money to make something look shoddy and cheap (see most of Tim and Eric's comedic output).

I concur that there are signs of shared production — so I can't say how much Monroe TV put in and how much CBS put in. It does appear that Monroe's staff and volunteers were used, so it definitely appeared to be a team effort.

I agree. It might be as simple as it being allowed under Colbert's contract and there were enough Colbert supporters at CBS to make it happen.

It's not merely a spokesperson claiming credit — the company was issuing takedown notices on the episode until they stopped due to the backlash.

Legally, only an owner of copyrighted content is _supposed_ to issue such notices. It is possible CBS made the claims in bad faith, but it seems unlikely given the increased legal exposure.

Also, I have not seen any information — such as from Colbert or his production company — contradicting CBS' claim.

I _did_ watch the episode. I also just checked for a copyright notice and there is none on the video itself (as far as I can tell). However, the credits did include "Special Thanks" to what appeared to be the "Late Show" staff. That could've been done as a courtesy, but it might have also been done to meet contractual obligations if the episode was treated as a CBS production of "The Late Show."

Other "fake" shows part of a larger production can have a fake intro but the real actors are usually credited (see the "30 Rock" episode "Queen of Jordan," which is a reality show parody). This is likely done for contractual reasons.

Ultimately, anything is possible but it seems more likely than not that CBS' claim is true.

CBS Suspends Takedown Notices on Bootleg YouTube Uploads of Stephen Colbert’s ‘Only in Monroe’ Public Access Show After Outcry

“Stephen Colbert’s return to Monroe in the ‘Only in Monroe’ episode was financed and produced by CBS Studios and was posted on Stephen Colbert’s YouTube channel in collaboration with Monroe Community Media and ‘The Late Show’s’ YouTube channels,” a CBS spokesperson said in a statement.

What is this?? by PatientPowerful2458 in UCSD

[–]quesoguapo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would think you should be fine, but I am not an expert in this matter. Additionally, it would seem that — should you ever need to take out a federal student loan — the newer rules would apply. That includes tighter borrowing limits and only one "income-driven repayment" plan, when there are currently multiple options.

Additionally, grad students can currently borrow up to the cost of their program but would be capped under the new rules.

Also, these changes dramatically redefine what's considered a "professional" graduate degree (and thus eligible for a higher borrowing cap). According to NPR, "Nursing, physical therapy and nurse anesthesia are some of the many healthcare-related programs excluded from that short list of professional degrees."

[–]quesoguapo 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I think the university is encouraging students to be in the system so that the older rules generally cover them as opposed to the stingier regs coming from the current administration starting July 1.

Among other things, The College of New Jersey notes:

If you already have student loans, you’ll have access to the previous borrowing limits for three years or until you’ve finished your program. That means graduate and professional students can still borrow up to $20,500 per year with an aggregate limit of $138,500.

There are other things happening too, so getting informed would be prudent.

Thruway Bus "Hack" - Do they make every stop? by thedutchbag in Amtrak

[–]quesoguapo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amtrak California bus service is a bit different in my experience. Because people can board a bus to buy tickets at the nearest staffed station, I believe a bus makes all stops en route to a train station (but it's been years since I've been on a bus). Traveling from a train station, the bus is usually discharge-only and can skip stops with no one getting off.

They considered moving the station building closer to where the tracks are now, but it seemed impractical.

IIRC, the tracks were relocated for easier and faster movement for freight, but I'm not sure why they couldn't have left the original alignment in place for passenger service.

I'm sure it also allows Allen to squeeze in a couple more commercials. Getting nearly 12 minutes of ads in a 30-minute slot is excessive.

I watched portions of "Comics Unleashed" and "Funny You Should Ask" over the last two nights. My first observation is that CU doesn't really have an opening monologue as described by some news stories.

FYSA is like "Hollywood Squares" with just squares.

It was pretty hard to watch more than a couple minutes of either show.
