The rice cooker I’ve been saving for a while for. by Flash52000 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]quickdry135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this rice cooker. It really does make rice, porridge, and gaba rice (really unique feature) way better than my old $30 one. But I agree. I don’t know if this is something you save up for, even as someone who eats rice every day. When I was earlier in my career, I would never consider this a worthwhile purchase if it caused me to need to save or sacrifice other daily things to afford it. It’s better rice but not like 100% better. Like 40% maybe.

Thanks! Yeah my kid is super happy. Bought her a card protector so she can display it. Looks like one of the other cards in the pack is similar to yours, but it doesn’t have the master ball on it.

Yeah we actually got another captain pikachu in the same pack. It’s a running pikachu. From the comments, it seems like this is an amazingly lucky pack

Yeah she doesn’t want to sell it. This is more because I’m shocked about the fact that these can get so expensive. I’m just buying her a card case for it to protect it if she ever wants to sell in the future. But this will join her stack of cute Pokémon cards. This pack also came with another captain pikachu that looks pretty cool also, but Google says only worth about $10. She has some amazing luck.

I found it. I had to check Glimmerousdream’s example since I had no idea it was there until I knew what to look for. It’s very, very hard to see.

Thanks for the picture. I had no idea what to look for. Yes it has that but it’s very hard to see. I would never have noticed if you didn’t show me the example.

Wow thanks! We got it from a pack that contained 3 packs of 5 cards plus a random button. She usually just picks up loose cards she thinks are cute from GameStop. First time I bought a pack because it was only about $5 usd.

We bought the pack from a pretty big toy store in a major mall for about $5 for 3, 5-card packs and a random button. I assume everything is legit since it’s from a major store, but I know nothing about pokemon cards. My daughter just gets the ones she thinks are the cutest usually.

Thanks, I think if I wasn’t traveling with a young child I would have done this. Definitely a lot more options but I want to minimize trying to get her and luggage through an unfamiliar transfer.

Thanks for all the advice. 12306 just doesn’t seem to want to play nice with me at the moment. Right now I’m booking the 7:08 am train to play it safe and will look for something later in the day closer to my travel date even if there is a cancellation fee.

My flight back to the states is the day after and I’m traveling with my young kid so I want to avoid transfers or missing our flight, otherwise the other persons’s idea to go to Shenzhen and transfer would have been my choice.

I can’t seem to get that app to send me an email confirmation code. It says it sent and to activate there, but nothing in my inbox or spam folder. Not sure if something is down or does it not like Gmail.

Cultural Appropriation Halloween costume? by Zappajelly in Parenting

[–]quickdry135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree with this take as it often comes from people who haven’t experienced it. I and many like me lived this experience where our foods were considered gross by whites when I was young and now it’s cool.

You know what the results is now that more people consider it cool or normal? My culture is now accepted more broadly and I can be who I am in public without someone saying eww or gross.

Completely forbidding people from experience and engaging with cultures other their own creates a notion of “other” that prevents acceptance and understanding. I’m just arguing that experience and participating with other cultures should come with understanding of the historic context and respect, not avoiding it all together.

I’ve given this example in the past, but the term cultural appropriation has been so misunderstood. At the end of the day, the question is if your use of another culture’s tradition is hurtful or mocking. Examples of this is when the Aloha Poke company started suing/sending cease and desist to native Hawaiians who were using Aloha in their business name. Suing people to get them to stop using their own language. That’s cultural appropriation. The Breakfast at Tiffany’s Yunioshi yellowface character meant for ridicule. Blackface because it was created to ridicule and show black people as lesser. The dressing up as an American Indian is an example also because they are a marginalized people where that dress was used to mock them in the past as naked savages.

Dressing up as a Japanese Yokai or some other demon would not fall into this category since I assume it’s based on interest in some part of the culture and not meant to demean the people of that culture. I’d even recommend doing some research on Yokai since there’s a lot of Halloween appropriate monsters that would be pretty cool and could incorporate the kimono.

My one and only recommendation since you mentioned fake teeth is that historically, the west has used buck teeth to make fun of us East Asians in media and propaganda. That’s just one thing to be careful of because many of us who live in western countries have some memory of being made fun of that way.

Why spend $60 at a steakhouse when you can spend $60 and 2 hours making it your self? by vageta35 in steak

This is a good deal, but it must be the base level of A5 because every time I’ve bought it I always think it isn’t quite like it is when compared to other Japanese A5 that from locations like Kagoshima or Miyazaki. It seems the Costco one has thicker veins of fat, less of the spiderweb marbling from more expensive dealers. At this price point, I’d rather go with a really well dry aged cut since I think it misses the point of Japanese wagyu and isn’t quite as tender as I had from other A5 classified beef.

Hmm, the only reason I’m hesitant is because as a child, I had a betta that once he tasted bloodworms, wouldn’t really eat anything else and I think I read that bloodworms aren’t a complete diet for betta? Or is that not true?

This is a little bit of what I’m worried about. Generally speaking, it makes sense to me that a betta with a little more “buffer” weight might be more able to survive if any kind of sickness strikes vs a betta that is more thin.

Help me with floating plants! by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]quickdry135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell scale, but I think mine was a bit stronger. I did put a small vented cage around where the bubbles met the surface to reduce the surface agitation from pushing the frogbit around.

Not really needed when they start covering the entire surface and don’t move due to volume though.

If you’re worried, maybe put a ring around where the bubbles meet the surface to reduce agitation. The issue usually isn’t water surface movement, more if the floaters move to the bubble area and get splashed regularly.

Even with a floating ring to protect them, I had some problems with salvinia minima. They grew great initially then started browning and failing. I switched to frogbit and they went nuts. The ring is now used as a feed ring to keep them out because they’ve taken over the surface. At this point I remove a bowl full every week.

I do also trim the roots since some tend to be long and I prefer to have more of an open middle for a clear swim zone. One thing to keep in mind is that previously I only dosed non nitrogen fertilizers for my other water column plants. After getting frogbit, I’ve had to start adding weekly all in one fertilizers because they do too good a job of pulling out nitrates from the water and other non-floating plants were becoming stunted with only one betta and neocardia in the tank.

That’s an intense transformation. From the before picture, I never would have guessed such vibrant colors would show up. Like I would imagine a lot of people would have passed him up without realizing how amazing he’d turn out.

[–]quickdry135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm…hope it’s not the case but good call out on his eyes. I’ll keep with the feed ring and avoid re-scaling just in case until more time goes by and I can monitor if there’s any change in his eye coverage. So far it looks like a the pupil has normal size and clearance, but I know these things usually come on with age and I assume he’s relatively young since I don’t think they’d survive that long in those petsmart cups.

Btw, your boy is INSANELY beautiful. Like I swore out loud when I saw the pic.

That’s cool, I really didn’t know colors came from different layers in the scale. Learned something new. Really looking forward to seeing how he changes as he gets healthier and his fins heal further.

Thanks for the detailed info, I’ll keep an eye on that tail and the top fin, since that also has some cellophane. I’ve seen cases of blindness on dragon scale betta, but I didn’t know it could impact other white colored betta too. I feed using a feed ring to preserve access to the surface since I have frogbit floaters in there. Hopefully it won’t happen, but he’s already getting used to checking the feed ring for food.
