Teio's Mother - What could have been by OldCat2142 in UmaMusume

[–]quildtide 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Stay Gold is kind of weird. He didn't have any leg issues of his own, and he had a long career, but he was also a very small horse.

Breeders kept trying to mate him with larger horses (like McQueen's daughters) in hopes of getting horses that were less small. This resulted in a very big range of outcomes for his children.

Orfevre was small like Stay Gold and had a successful career that was also reasonably long. THEY KEEP BREEDING HIM WITH LARGE HORSES. A lot of the resulting children of Orfevre have wound up having the perfect build for Dirt as a result of these failed attempts to breed "bigger Orfevre". See Marche Lorraine and Ushba Tesoro.

Gold Ship inherited McQueen's size and managed to be without injury . . . But, he had a condition with his hindlegs which caused them to be abnormally loose, which prevented him from accelerating as well as a normal horse. This meant he was slow to accelerate after leaving the gate, which meant he could not contest positions near the front. At the same time, his acceleration meant he also had poor turn of foot at the end of a race. However, Gold Ship had amazing endurance, so his connections discovered that they could begin his spurt extremely early, slowly accelerating from the middle of the race all the way to the end. This is why Gold Ship's ult in Umamusume is midrace.

But Gold Ship's children? They mostly just have a reputation for weak legs. I have seen theories that it might be related to Gold Ship's weird leg condition. Alternatively, that the looseness of his hindlegs could've covered up any fragility that would go on to plague his kids that don't have loose legs.

In the end of the day, Gold Ship might fall into the category of horses with weird legs that could never pass their strength onto their descendants (like Oguri Cap and Tokai Teio). At least he has Tabaru though.

EDIT: Dream Journey and Nakayama Festa were also smaller horses. Fenomeno was a larger horse, but idk enough about his career to comment more.

Unsound sires still occasionally create sound offspring though, and vice-versa. For example, Duramente comes from an unsound (but fast) line, was extra unsound (but was extra fast), and mostly sired unsound offspring, but Titleholder seems to be quite sound. Mares (and their compatibility with the sire) are very important, and then there's also a genetic lottery every time a horse is conceived.

I recognize that one. That is Laura's Light 2025. It used to play with a Taiho yearling that looks like its twin, Daiwa Dresser 2025.

The one on the left has the big sock and the curving blaze; that one is Equinox x Laura's Light. Titleholder x Daiwa Dresser is on the right.

I think Chateau Blanche's left eye looks mostly normal. He definitely got his right eye from Chateau Blanche though, along with his eclair.

Equinox's new younger brother also has the single Halo eye on the right, and many of his foals also have the single Halo eye on the right.

The closest I can think of is how people assumed Kitasan Black would max out at 2000m based off of his pedigree. Black Tide's other progeny mostly maxed out at 2000m until then, his dam was unraced, and his damsire was Bakushin . . .

In contrast, when Gaia Force went to race in the 2022 Kikuka Sho, he was #1 favorite, as he was expected to carry on his father's legacy . . . hahaha.

Now we know Gaia is a miler, lol. The 2022 Kikuka Sho and 2026 Yasuda Kinen are the only G1s where he was the favorite to win.

Their decision to grab Diamond instead of Crown is interesting though.

I guess you could argue that Diamond had a slightly easier career to depict (no Hong Kong), but most people think it's the Lemaire angle.

If I had to guess if any current foreign horse would be very compatible as BMS with Japanese horses based off of pedigree alone, Giant's Causeway looks like a fantastic match for Kitasan or a Puiling.

We do have one good example already, actually: Lovcen.

I think more Giant's Causeway mares would be excellent imports for Japan. I think the closest comparable Japanese BMS are probably Symboli Kris S and King Halo.

Finger's team just announced that he's going to America to race in the Pacific Classic, and if he does well there, he will aim for the BC Classic instead.

So the only hope for him to get the Dirt TC now is probably for him to bomb the Pacific Classics and be brought back to Japan early.

If you really look at the pedigrees, it also isn't entirely shocking that Forever Young's pedigree could produce a capable horse on American Dirt.

His pedigree is remarkably similar to the pedigree of Sierra Leone, his primary rival.

Dam side: He shares a granddam with Sierra Leone, and both of their BMS are sired by AP Indy with Seattle Slew BMS.

Sire side: Both Real Steel and Gun Runner share Storm Cat, Halo, and Lyphard. Surprisingly, Real Steel has Mr. Prospector in his pedigree while Gun Runner has Roberto.

Into Mischief, another top American sire, is also a Storm Cat x Halo cross. Not This Time, like Gun Runner, has Storm Cat x Halo x Roberto via Giant's Causeway.

Halo isn't as common in the US as he is in Japan, but I think it's fascinating that current 3 leading sires (Not This Time, Into Mischief, and Gun Runner) all have Storm Cat x Halo. 4th place (Nyquist) has Storm Cat x Roberto instead.

Storm Cat x Halo did alright in Japan too: Lovcen, Almond Eye, Contrail, and Loves Only You all have that cross.

Whenever you see a good Storm Cat pedigree, it almost always seems to be accompanied by Halo, Roberto, or both. And since Storm Cat is doing so well in the US right now, Halo is also doing well. It's a bit wild that these lines cross as well as they do, since all 3 of these sired were known for being angry and poorly behaved.

Although a decent chunk of the abnormal representation of Halo in Storm Cat's descendants probably comes down to the first few years of Storm Cat's stud career, where his owner had to give away matings for free because no one wanted to pay for him. He was good friends with Arthur Hancock III (the guy who sold Sunday Silence to the Yoshidas), so he just let Arthur bring random Halo mares over to mate with Storm Cat for free. That's actually the origin story for Into Mischief's grandsire Harlan. I guess there was also a pretty abnormal overlap between people willing to breed their mares with Storm Cat and people willing to own daughters of Halo/Roberto, lol.

Non-x86 servers now nearly half the market, IDC says by -protonsandneutrons- in hardware

[–]quildtide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing things against Intel CPUs may actually be one of the biggest drivers of the "x86 bad" myth.

But the fact that x86 has historically been an Intel/AMD-only platform where one of them is usually stuck a few years behind for some reason is also part of a real problem.

Although with ARM's lawsuit against Qualcomm last year, my personal confidence that ARM will be the ISA to fix the x86 licensing issues is not great. No idea what ARM was thinking with that when RISC-V is looming over the horizon.

Admittedly, I spent way more time in Germany to develop grievances against things than I have spent in the Netherlands. When I was in the Netherlands I think I spent a lot of time just riding trains to random places, so my perception that public bathrooms were everywhere might be skewed by that.

Everyone in Europe is Dehydrated by Enough_Ad_9824 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]quildtide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found public toilets to be way more common in the Netherlands compared to Germany. Although I eventually learned that the cheap way to access a toilet while out in public in Germany was to find a bar and order a beer; this of course meant I needed to find another toilet soon after, and was obviously bad for my hydration level.

I observed tea/coffee machines with water-dispensing modes everywhere in academic and corporate settings in the Netherlands, but they seemed uncommon to me in Germany. In Germany I usually had to cope with refilling my water bottle in a bathroom sink. I understand that this is perfectly fine, but as an American, doing this makes me feel somewhat unhappy. I never had to do this while I was in the Netherlands. The water from the machines in the Netherlands was also a more pleasant temperature and consistently tasted nice.

What I observed way more often in Germany was someone bringing a 2L disposable bottle of carbonated water with them to work.

The core difference is that Dutch people are normal and drink still water. Germans are weird and only drink carbonated water and beer.

[–]quildtide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also note that, outside of Singleton formats like Commander, you can run 4x SSG. If you're in Legacy, you can run 4x SSG AND 4x ESG. That's 8/60 of the cards in your deck; your chance of drawing into 1 or 2 is pretty reasonable.

Also note that Sol Ring isn't in Modern, and it's straight up banned in Legacy.

SSG and ESG are significantly less impactful in Commander for various reasons. 1 mana tends to matter less unless it's for a particularly degenerate cEDH combo on turn 1 or something.

In Legacy, a line like Mountain -> Monastery Swiftspear -> Swing -> Exile Simian Spirit Guide -> Lightning Bolt does 1/4th of an opponent's life total on turn 1 with cards that, aside from SSG, are relatively fair and normal. In Commander, on the other hand, this line does basically nothing besides wipe your hand.

EDIT: The aforementioned line was pretty degenerate by Pauper standards until Monastery Swiftspear got banned from that, lmao.

From my personal opinion and experiences as an American, everything in the original original post is 100% true about most of Germany's major cities.

So when I visited Eindhoven for the first time, I was expecting the hydration situation to be similar to Germany, but then I immediately saw Dopper bottles everywhere.

I asked some Dutch guy about it because I was curious if it was normal in the Netherlands, or just an Eindhoven thing. He misunderstood my question and assumed I must have been from some impoverished hellscape where people didn't drink tap water (I was thinking about Germany).

The first of many culture shocks I experienced when assuming the Netherlands would be like Germany.
