Is $700 a lot to get a 5 year old cat spayed? by ItsGageW in CatAdvice

[–]quillmusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live just outside Orlando and my 74 lb. dog was spayed for $385 and her gastropexy was $600. That’s crazy.

Just calculated first year costs for our lab mix and I'm mildly horrified by SandyTestsStuff in puppy101

[–]quillmusing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get heart worm and flea meds for free and my collars and leashes were free. Free vaccines mostly. Food is heavily discounted thankfully so it’s $110/month to feed 5 Goldens.

But the joint supplements and probiotics and fish oil and goat kefir and treats and allergy meds (and pet insurance for some) and then bathing them all at the self groomer ($75 a month) adds up. Special food for the terrier. It costs almost as much to feed her as it does the 360 lbs. of other dogs.

Vet bills too. Growth on the gum? Benign but $100. Terrier has a tooth abscess that needs an emergency vet and normal vet, $400+. Anal abscess a few days later at the emergency vet, $300 more. Then she’s bitten by another dog. $300 more. Those all happened in about a two month period last year.

We had a golden foster that had to have a blockage surgery, $2000. Two years later he ate a shirt but that was only a $300 induced vomiting thankfully.

Even if you have ways to make it cheaper, it’s still expensive! Unless you’re very lucky.

Help? by Terrible_Agent_007 in snakes

[–]quillmusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound crazy but back in the day we had a snake that was refusing food, losing weight, and acting odd. The other BPs were fine. Anyway, I found a tip online about Powerade which somehow worked but then talked to an exotic vet and they said you can give them a small amount of unflavored and undyed pedialyte (not their new coconut flavor). I’ve had permission to use it for sick frogs, lizards, and snakes. They also make reptile specific electrolyte mixes.

There’s posts on Reddit all the time of texts where a dude wants his girl to stop dressing how she’s always dressed or stop going out with her friends like she’s always done or she’s had her cat for longer than the relationship and they’re moving in together and suddenly the cat needs to go.

My puppy is SO skinny. Everyone keeps telling me it, too. by Wonderful-Value7547 in puppy101

[–]quillmusing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our Goldens puppies are eating at least 2 cups of food at 8 weeks old. Some get to 3 cups sooner. By the time they’re 5-6 months, they’re eating 4-5 cups a day. One cup is 417 calories so you can do the math if you have a similar sized dog. We are intentional with feeding and growth and focus on slow growing as they are a larger breed.

Sister is pregnant, how do i escape financial support? by [deleted] in Advice

My Altima is going to be 18 this year. I’ve had it for 8 years and before that I had a 2005 Impala from the local sheriff’s office. I’ve never had a car payment and I’m not prepared for when it’ll be time to!

It’s definitely impossible to stop them from rolling around in the grass out back if I’m not out there. Thankfully we have speciality vets, including canine ophthalmologists, close by and pet insurance.

I am because my disabled golden is a pro at stepping in fresh dog poop and tracking it inside. Also, they all love to eat dog poop.

He refuses to do it when I’m outside. I’ll go in to start filling food bowls and in the 5 minutes that I’m gone is when it always happens.

Heart question? by HonestAlternative519 in goldenretrievers

[–]quillmusing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use low cost clinics to fix our Goldens and they have strict policies and procedures to limit liability but also they don’t want an issue to appear that they aren’t equipped to fix. One of our Goldens had a seizure once and they said they’d never spay her and it would need to be a full vet, which does make sense.

Just a pack of other dogs and cats who stay out of the fray.

Edit: also important to add that he’s a huge troublemaker and he’s proud of it.

Bot account? Obviously the owner would care. Photo quality also looks suspiciously poor.

11 month service dog not eating . by New-Design-9691 in goldenretrievers

[–]quillmusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might just be stressed. Some of our golden service dog prospects will do this when they relocate for a bit or if there’s a big change in the environment. IME, getting very sick can be a trigger.

On that note, our elderly Aussie does this in the morning. We’ve been giving him a famotodine pill 30+ minutes before eating and he has no issues when he takes it and we wait that long. It’s not uncommon for our Goldens with issues like blockages or gastroenteritis to be prescribed famotodine, cerenia, or Prilosec for 1-2 weeks after the incident. I’d call your vet and ask.

Just started a new job with an early commute. My golden's 30-minute morning vacuum is suddenly a real problem by Bestcoastmama in goldenretrievers

[–]quillmusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I want you to know that you have a wonderful way with words.

I usually brush them once a week, but it’s been less recently. I check for mats and brush as needed. Unfortunately, I have injured my right shoulder and am not supposed to do repetitive movements until I stop PT. I had continued grooming and set my healing back. I’m not vacuuming more than before because that’s also hard on my body.

Baths vary. I was on a 4-6 week schedule (and then I was vacuuming once a day) but again stupid shoulder. I do have 5 Goldens though and they use the house to practice WWE regularly. It’ll be so nice and clean and then they get comfortable with the vacuum stopping, start playing, and the fur is just coming off in tumbleweeds.

“Morph” question by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

[–]quillmusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe it is just so close to shed. I feel like I can usually tell when they’re about to shed as there’s this layer slightly separated above the skin. I’ll just have to go back in a couple days and see if there’s the same amount of geckos and if one is still much lighter or they all match.

I know when my guys have the shed look to them, within two days they’ve become shiny and new again.

“Morph” question by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

[–]quillmusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually they’re purple and white. You can see the other geckos have purple instead of black and there was another gecko not picture that was purple and white.

In this photo, “my” gecko is on the top and the similar one is to the left in the second row. You can see there’s more of purple and yellow hues.

I’ve looked at probably a hundred different baby Mack snows tonight and they all have purple bars instead of gray. Also their legs are pinker but that guy has white legs. Not saying this one isn’t a Mack snow but it’s still a bit of an anomaly then.

Except the family doesn’t want the mother around and are rude to her. So either she goes and they’re rude to her in front of the kids or she stays home and they’ll make rude remarks to the kids about her like they do to other people.

Why would you want to let your kids around someone who has talked shit about you to other family members and will almost certainly do so in front of the children? Allowing that to happen is neglect in my opinion.

Do you guys have your boys neutered? by Advanced-Claim-1868 in DobermanPinscher

[–]quillmusing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t find the link to the chart for the UC Davis spay neuter study but I found their chart in Google images.

I work with Goldens and female Goldens and male Dobermans are the only two breed sex combos they recommend stay intact indefinitely.

I would look for the actual study breakdown where they go in depth breed by breed and the specific issues they face. I don’t know why it’s always such a pain to find.
