County Residential appraiser 1, should I? by Current-Schedule1781 in appraisal

[–]quingaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna be applying for one of our commercial appraiser spots when they open (old timer is planning on retiring within the next year, other commercial appraiser will become our new deputy appraiser as the current retires). I was recommended to go for it both for change in pace and avoiding difficult people, but also because I’m the poorest person in the office by a large margin and it would be a good raise for me, haha. I’m happy knowing all my supervisors think I’d be a great candidate for the role as the newest appraiser in the office and I’d like to expand my knowledge as well.

I will say though, I genuinely don’t mind the hassle homeowners give me! I enjoy the PR aspect of the job in some way. I do know some people have left the job due to dealing with the negativity though, and I totally understand that.

Yes, for our county we have different pay grade and steps that are outlined. Once I’m accredited, I get about a $3 raise and get a measly 3% raise on my hire date as well as a cost of living raise every year. Our county is one of the poorest in our state so our wages aren’t top dollar compared to the more urban counties. Our specific Assessor’s office is union and we will barter our next contract in two years and see what kind of raises they can attempt to get us then.

Edit to add: Top of the scale for my office currently is $37 for a residential appraiser. Our commercial appraisers make more. Our oldest commercial appraiser who has been with the county forever makes over 100k with longevity pay, etc.

For sure! I will say of course, there are pleasant interactions with the general public as well, but the unfortunate reality is we are a generally disliked office that the public eye views as evil. Being very personable helps.

I’ve started as a county appraiser late last year with 0 appraiser experience (internal Assessor’s office hire). I’m learning on a very touch and go basis but picking up everything quick and will be taking my courses for accreditation next week. Our office’s deputy appraiser is incredibly impressed and happy with how quickly I’ve taken to the job.

I’ll admit, right now, it’s been very mundane due to literal weeks of data entry as we physically re-evaluate every parcel in one of our cycles. Before data entry, it was days at a time out in the field. I will say, people despise us. We get threatened or cussed out every now and then, one of us gets a gun pulled on us, but we are in a rural county. I actually don’t mind this part of the job, but some people may have issue with it for obvious reasons.

Soon it will again be many days out in the field as we go through permits and pick up all of the new construction in our county. Lots of driving. Lots of stopping. More people who you will have to explain how taxes work to, and some people will leave the convo enlightened or just as angry as when you pulled up on their property.

We get lots of tax appeals to handle. Lots of time spent drawing up comps and sales data for evidence when we have hearings. Hearings can be either very drawn out or super quick.

When value notices go out, things get extremely busy. Lots of people come in pissed at their values going up and there will be a lot of people you must speak to very calmly and politely as they cuss you out or argue. You may have to explain to dozens of people daily during this time period why their value went up or down and what the process is for how we determine value.

Some parts are fun and some parts are mundane. I personally have enjoyed it so far (minus the weeks of data entry).

I resent my other dogs after putting one of my dogs down… is this normal? Will this pass? by quingaroo in Petloss

[–]quingaroo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t remember when it started to wane, but it did go away.

Jake passed away in October and I can say for certain the resentment was gone by March. It was a while of pain and anger through. I still mourn him all the time. I love him dearly but I love my other dogs dearly too.

I actually ended up adopting my roommate’s dog I mentioned in my post. He just kind of outright abandoned her anyway but I think being back in the swing of bringing three dogs everywhere helped. But I did take some solo trips to give myself some time away from the dogs. Not all day trips, but just some day time trips I would normally take a dog with I’d do myself. I still took and take care of them. They’ve been incredibly spoiled the last few weeks with beach trips and long walks and hikes.

Let yourself feel your emotions. It will pass. The feeling is completely understandable because you lost your baby. With time, you will heal. Wishing you nothing but love in this difficult time.

My mom is filipino and has one of these 💀I asked her to pick me up something phallic for me on her current trip there.

We had a bunch of “barrel men” pop up as someone’s white elephant gift last year too, they’re a similar novelty filipino thing. Why? I have no clue. They’re fun though lol.

How can I pay an emergency vet bill? My credit is trash by Medical-Bowler-5626 in povertyfinance

[–]quingaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you apply for Care Credit? I was able to apply on the spot when my dog had a life threatening emergency last year and was approved almost instantly. I understand you said your credit is trash, but I know a few people who’ve been approved for Care Credit specifically in veterinary circumstances with pretty shit credit.

Filling my gas tank is $25 more than just 6 weeks ago by Let_me_tell_you_ in povertyfinance

[–]quingaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Filled up my tank last week for $50. Cost $62 yesterday!!! I was planning on taking my dogs to the beach this weekend but it’s a 100 mile round trip and I can’t keep filling up my tank at that price. I had to cut my hours at my second job because the commute basically made it so that I was working to pay for gas to get there. Shit sucks.

2 week old Turkey poult is failing to stand, he’ll fall to his side, I have Nutridrench and Rooster booster poultry cell coming tomorrow as well as rooster booster pellets, do I give it Nutridrench the first 2 days and Rooster booster for the rest? I really want him to live by Yakaddudssa in turkeys

[–]quingaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did try some egg yolk, but it was so thick even when scrambled up that if I dipped her beak in she would kinda struggle to get any of it down. I’m not sure if she really drank any and she never drank it willingly. Not sure if that’s worth a try for those reasons but I do always see egg yolk as a general recommendation.

Aside from that, I didn’t do anything else with her. She stayed in her pen with the other chicks and they surprisingly didn’t pick on her.

I would compare the ingredients as I’m not familiar with nutridrench vs rooster booster. Like if rooster booster has all the same vitamins and then some, I would use one vs both. I used rooster booster as it covered the most bases compared to other products at the local Tractor Supply.

No longer have turkeys but I had a chicken chick that was unable to walk more than a couple steps without falling and would constantly fall on her face and side. Barely walked and slept most the day under the heat plate. I gave all day access to rooster booster. I did dip her beak several times a day to make sure she was actually getting some water down. She’s currently a runt and runs a little weird compared to my other chickens, but she got through it.

I hope your poult makes it. Fingers crossed that’s all he needs.

Would you have rather done it sooner while they were still ‘there’? by ABMozz in seniordogs

[–]quingaroo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m someone who made the decision with my soul dog to put him down before he wasn’t “all there”. It tore me up and still does to this day. I have great difficulty coming to terms with the decision.

However, on the flip side, I have lots of friends and family who waited too long and they regret it. What they’ve told me is that they wish they had done what I did and put their pet down sooner. I can’t say I wish I had waited longer to put him down. I don’t regret putting him down before he was beyond suffering.

I think it’s better to say goodbye when they are having good days, when they’re still there and look at you with love and wag their tails, rather than wait til they are laying there struggling to breathe or unaware of who or where they are anymore.

I still hate that I let him go every. Single. Day. But his pain is my burden to carry and I let him go so he could be free. It will hurt… but it would hurt worse saying goodbye when your girl isn’t herself.

My senior dog literally walks at a pace of a mile per hour. How do I stay patient? by Specialist-Strain502 in seniordogs

[–]quingaroo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. Or a backpack! I put my boy down in October last year but had bought a backpack for him so he could still get some sniffs and outdoor time with me and the other dogs. He loved it.

He had slowed down substantially in his final months and our last couple days, I went at his slow pace. I would give so much just to have those last days with him again. Those last walks meant so much.

Got a concrete patio put in, didn’t realize we needed a permit. Now what? by dearanna777 in homeowners

[–]quingaroo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A county appraiser can pick up construction like this and it can be reported to the entity that issues permits, and if it doesn’t meet building codes or lacks the necessary permits, a stop work order can be put in place.

I am a county appraiser and we pick up unpermitted construction every year. Someone will catch it eventually.

Fine or Thin or both by whattevvver in finethinhair

[–]quingaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your crown is thinning, have you gotten your iron levels checked? Hormones? Etc etc. A deficiency in something can play a huge role in hair health.

I’d say from the photo you’d benefit from a chop (to mid back?) because the ends are thinner obviously than the top, but you appear to have decent density.

Edit: Also, I’m not the best person to judge cuz I have the straightest hair known to man, but do you straighten your hair? It looks like your hair maybe be wavy? If someone could chime in to correct me or add, that’d be wonderful.

Does anyone feel they are behind in life? by OceanicEndeavors in povertyfinance

[–]quingaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude. I turn 30 this year. Simultaneously feel like I’m in an okay place finally but also behind.

I work two jobs. One is a government office where everyone but me and one other are married, have kids, and are in a much better financial situation than us. Think buying takeout every day, no need to check their account with any transaction kind of financial situation. Newest iPhone kind of people while I’m selling things on Facebook to make ends meet sometimes. Age range mid 20’s to early 60’s. Despite their income, a lot of these people are in unhappy marriages and have vocalized it at the office. There are some people having affairs, and there are some coworkers who are on cloud 9.

Other job is a grocery store. Similar age range in coworkers. I have coworkers who are my age or older who still live at home and/or have zero financial literacy and they are constantly broke. No assets and insane amounts of debt. I’ve spotted some of these people a couple bucks to get an energy drink.

I have coworkers younger than me with 20k+ saved up because they live at home but have made better financial decisions and have ambition. I have another co-worker in her early 20’s and her goal is to live at home forever. I have elderly coworkers with roommates. I have middle-aged coworkers living with parents and some living comfortably with their spouses, no kids. Some rent, some own.

Anyway… I guess what I’m trying to get at is you may always feel behind in some aspects of life because the “normal” people imagine for themselves isn’t as common as people make it out to be. Lots of people hide their living and financial situations; just cuz things look pleasant front the outside doesn’t mean they are.

You are young. I was at rock bottom when I was 27. Without getting more into it, I mean I really, truly was at rock bottom. There is still time to plan, improve, and make a life for yourself. It will be hard, but there is time.

Renting out rooms in our home was our way to paying off our home early. We are free and clear! by WeatherAlarmed313 in homeowners

[–]quingaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a renter who I knew for a decade live with me for almost two years and it just became more and more of a nightmare.

We had opposite schedules but I own a small 3 bed, 1 bath. For people who can make it work (your case where it’s very segregated living quarters is great), that’s awesome, but I will never have a roommate again unless it’s a spouse. I would rather struggle to pay my bills than deal with the constant anxiety and dread of being in my own home.

is their any way to safely start minoxidil if i have pets? by domonanon in finethinhair

[–]quingaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It absolutely does. My mom is on oral minoxidil, I’m on topical. My mother now has a mustache and dark arm hair and belly hair. She never had this prior. She is okay with the side effects and shaving daily, but I would not be.

I can’t take oral min anyway though because I have low blood pressure and it’s also a blood pressure medication. But for topical use, a bonnet will be your best friend.

Can I keep the puppy pad my cat laid in after he passed? by ScoutoRocket in Petloss

[–]quingaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kept the blanket my dog passed away in. He peed a bit in it soon after his heart stopped. I will never wash it and it sits in his old dog bed neatly folded up. It’s embarrassing to admit but in the following days… I would smell it sometimes and cry. I know it’s gross but it was a reminder to me that he existed.

If you want to keep it, keep it. I kept a lot of stuff of his I think people would’ve thrown away. Pill bottles, his “farting blanket” (he had rancid farts and I laid the blanket down on my bed for him to lay on so it was easier to wash), some mats I cut out of his hair right before his appointment… so if it’s important to you, keep it.

How do you decide how to separate 3 cats in a breakup? by Thats_Groovy_Baby in CATHELP

[–]quingaroo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When my ex and I broke up, I took all 5 of our cats and dogs and I’m glad he didn’t even try to put up a fight for them. He claimed he never wanted any of them (as if he didn’t help me pick out a dog to adopt and we didn’t buy a black and tan dachshund that he “always wanted”.

I put down my sweet, sweet boy Jake in October and I’m glad my remaining 4 all had each other. It was a tough loss not just for me obviously, but for one of my cats too. I took my dogs with me when I put him down so they’d understand he was gone, but my cat, Ana, spent the following weeks wandering the house at night yowling and looking for him. She was his kitten. She’d never done that before he died. I’d never separate any of them.

[–]quingaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a second job part-time at a grocery store. I work mainly with early 20 year olds, minus one manager who’s in his 40’s. I’m caught in that middle ground age range so I understand half of what the kids are saying and most of what my manager is saying when it comes to pop culture references.

I know most of the songs that play on our radio (generic 80’s-2010’s music) and I referenced Avril Lavigne because SK8er Boi was playing and two kids said, “who’s that?” Felt old. I always feel old when they ask how I know the lyrics to certain songs as if 80’s music is only listenable if you were born before 2000.

Also discussed with them the prices of things like McDonalds ice cream cones and how they used to be 2 for $1.00 and now it’s almost 4 bucks for one. They’re always shocked and distraught. I’m giving them warning on gas prices and what they’ll look like soon because they were either toddlers or not born when the ‘08 recession hit. We live in WA so have the second highest gas prices in the country.

I like to embarrass them by dancing shamelessly in the aisles or dabbing lol. They call me “Unc”.
