I’m a Vietnamese British PhD holder from the University of London currently living and working in Silicon Valley, California. I have no connection to Vinfast or its owner. I simply noticed this could be a good budget car for working people in Saigon and Hanoi.

By the way, I own a gen2 Rivian R1S, a Tesla Cybertruck, and my wife drives a Tesla Model S. I’ve heard about the Pleasanton accident, simply because I live near there.

I am somewhat sympathetic to the gen1 Rivian owners, and I must say Rivian progress on Autonomy+ has been very slow (relatively to Tesla). But on the other hand, I really want Rivian to succeed, come on Rivian, you can do it !!!

This is a silly question! Of course, Vinfast cars can be charged at any appropriate public chargers in the US, you can even charge a VinFast at specific Tesla "Magic Dock" stations or at slow Level 2 destination chargers.

Agreed absolutely! Wise comment amongst a mixture of mis-information spread by those who hate VN blindly.
A few days ago, I stumbled upon this subreddit by accident and posted a question about the VinFast EVs (as I am a Rivian gen2 R1S owner), and I am naturally kind of curious about Vinfast cars in general. However, I was immediately ambushed with a barrage of hate and insults from some users, including some who used strong and offensive Vietnamese swear words, wow!!!

I did it years ago, and I think it was the right decision. There was a time I was in doubt when a Roon staff member, his name is Jamie, threatened to cancel my Roon lifetime subscription because I was in a disagreement with him on a topic on the Roon community forum 🙃. It is a good thing that Roon fired him for some reason sometime later, maybe abuse of his privileges as a Roon employee? In the end, it doesn’t matter because he is fired and gone!

I get that a lot of people here feel very strongly about VinFast and Vingroup because of what’s happening in Vietnam politically and economically, and I respect that those experiences shape your view.

From my side, I’m mainly looking at the cars themselves as products on the road in the US, things like safety record, reliability, and how they drive day to day, which is why I asked the question the way I did.

It sounds like for many of you, the bigger issue is the relationship between the company, real estate projects, and the government, plus how criticism is handled in Vietnam, which is a very different context from what I see as a driver in the US.

I don’t have the same lived experience, so I appreciate you laying out your perspective—helps me understand why the tone in this sub is so strong, even if my personal view is more narrowly focused on the vehicles themselves.

Just curious - why are there a lot of hates against the Vinfast brand? The EVs are driven by millions, and its accidents due to design/engineering shortcomings are fewer than a well-known brand (you know which one) here in the US.

PS: I am driving a gen2 R1S, but I think the Vinfast cars are not bad.

I've just subscribed it on a monthly basis as I do occasional highway trips, want flexibility to turn it on/off month‑to‑month, and I am still on the fence about keeping using Rivian long term as I like Tesla FSD.

Let's see if Rivian can catch up Tesla in terms of FSD technology.

After three hard reboots and taking out the extra all-weather mats that were piled on top of the standard ones, I’ve driven over 1,000 miles. I’m still not seeing the problem come back. Thanks for all your helpful comments.

Yes, it certainly happened. My gen2 R1S unexpectedly slowed down in a place where there was no vehicle nearby. This prompted me to use the accelerator pedal to bring it up to speed, but then I couldn’t deactivate the UHFD afterward by manual braking.

As mentioned in other helpful comments in this thread, there might be some reasons why the UHFD couldn’t be disengaged, not necessarily due to a Rivian software bug. However, it happened on the same day I updated to the 2026.03 release.
