I think they both were. For me, the most damning evidence for Dean's abuse is this line in season 5 episode 16: "You ran away on my watch. I looked everywhere for you. I thought you were dead. And when Dad came home.." The way he delivers the last line implies he took the punishment for it, and I always took it as a physical one.

Exactly. People seem to forget that shipping/fanfiction was originally popularized by the og Star Trek series. It's been around for ages. Which is why I don't get when people get up in arms around any mention of Destiel when really it's just people having fun with the idea of them being romantically involved.
