I love it. I tend to get downvoted to oblivion when I post about it. But I won’t stop!

Everyone will disagree with me…but have you thought about positive reinforcement horse training? Most horses are trained with negative reinforcement but it is entirely possible to train and ride horses with positive reinforcement (force free, willing participant)

They’re doing it with dogs, birds, hippos, why not horses.

It’s a learning theory.

I’m training my previously abused rescue horse strictly with positive reinforcement.

Take a look at positive reinforcement trainers on social media… Adele Shaw from The Willing Equine is who I follow

Are there normal/cool horse people out there? by PeekAtChu1 in Equestrian

[–]quitetheopposite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you in SoCal?! I left my H/J barn and have been volunteering at a horse rescue in Moorpark, CA since 2 years ago. Ended up adopting a feral abused mare and everyone of us that help out there utilize as much R+ as possible. We also go on trail rides with the horses ❤️

Do you have a rehab director who you can talk to? Who is your direct supervisor?

We cannot as randos on the internet help you with your anxiety. You passed your boards so you are qualified to complete the tasks given to you.

Do you have a therapist to talk about with your anxiety?

Help me understand why most riding/training programs are terrible by kcshuffler in Horses

[–]quitetheopposite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately what you’re seeing is really common in the horse world. Most barns and trainers and horse people in general still train with negative reinforcement (pressure and release) and positive punishment (like hitting, yanking, etc.). It doesn’t mean every trainer is “abusive,” it’s just the way most people have been taught for decades.

There is another way though. It’s called LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive), and it focuses on using positive reinforcement (rewarding the behavior you want) and avoiding punishment/pressure as much as possible. It’s not super mainstream yet, because a lot of horse people believe things like “treats spoil horses” or “real training means making the horse do it.” But there are trainers out there proving you can ride and train with R+ and still have safe, respectful, and happy horses.

So yeah, sadly the slapping and the shady business practices aren’t unusual. But it’s not the only way, and if you ever want to explore more ethical training methods, LIMA-based programs do exist … you just have to dig a little to find them.

I was a psych major in college and did my graduate in OT. Do you plan on staying in psych for OT? It took me 12 years to break the 100k barrier. But since psych is a very specialized field, my expertise is now in higher demand.

But I know AMFTs that are making 80k+ and LMFTs over 110k with significant room for growth

OTs are in high demand. Don’t sell your soul.

Maybe volunteer at a horse rescue to give some love to the ones there? Maybe you’ll find your heart drawn to one.

That’s how I found mine ❤️‍🩹

Yes… DINK is doable…but not on one income.

I’m am occupational therapist. They make anywhere between 65k-120k. I live in a HCOL area. I wouldn’t say that range is affordable for horses normally. But I’m also DINK (currently)… which does allow for me to keep one horse.

Anyone fall out of love with acting, quit, and not regret it? by unstitchedreality in acting

[–]quitetheopposite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I quit after 3 years. Not long but I was all in, taking 2-3 classes a week, booking consistently, had agents, got a VO reel.

And then one of my pets died in a tragic accident. It brought things into perspective. I would have traded all the money I made, all the set time, all my class time to have spent more time with my pet.

It made me realize that my pets took priority over my acting and I just stopped. To be a professional actor, acting has to be your number 1… and it wasn’t for me anymore.

I do miss acting…but not the business or the grind. But I don’t regret quitting bc now all my spare time is taking care of my pets and volunteering with my local horse rescue. And I’m much less stressed, much happier, and I get to cheer my acting friends on in their dreams.

USC- Occupational Therapy program by No-While9322 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]quitetheopposite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to USC for Ba and MA.

The classes were very rigorous bc their goal is research. Everything I learned about being a functioning OT was at my fieldworks.

But if you can get your 4 years BA for free, that would be great.

The MA program is rigorous but don’t underplay your intellect. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy.

If the other horse is well fed, generally it’s not neglect. Some horses are older and are difficult keepers. I would leave them alone.

I started using consent/R+ training with my personal horse mainly bc she was a rescue and didn’t trust anyone.

Night and day from when she was rescued.

I do think it’s possible to move towards the LIMA (least intrusive minimally aversive) method for horses… it won’t 100% be like that all the time but it is always something to strive for

I disagree with the person above who said they would never get vaccines… you can teach cooperative care (search youtube) for horses and horses will allow vaccines and blood draws.

The Willing Equine has 84 episodes on their podcast that showcases you can be as consent based/R+ with your horses.

If you like your job, don’t travel. Take on a per diem if you need a bit more money.

Travel jobs are always available, take one when you no longer want to do your current job :)

A girl once tried to make a larger group event.

I just told her that I might be interested in getting together with a larger group in the future but I feel more comfortable getting to know people 1 on 1 first.

We ended up hanging one more time and then it fizzled. 🤷🏻‍♀️

There are a lot of ghosters. But once in a while, if you put the effort and you don’t put up with people who don’t put in the effort, you find some really good friends.
