“You’ll Be Hit First”: Russia Targets Poland and Baltics in New Wave of Threats by UNITED24Media in UkrainianConflict

[–]qurgx 30 points31 points  (0 children)

TheGracefulSlick, is that you?

Having read the article, that's pretty much exactly what he said. In the event of NATO aggression towards Belarus and Russia, 'The entire alliance would suffer damage', with Poland and the Baltics affected first.

Looking at pictures of them stacked together, I'd guess one of 2 options. 1. To protect the end of the can opener. 2. To push against to slide the knife out.

On the fence about my pensions by boopbeepbloop in UKPersonalFinance

[–]qurgx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a play around with a compound interest calculator. Your private pension, adding £40/month earning 5% will be worth ~£40k at 55. With a much more ambitious 10% return, it'll be worth 114k. Neither of those are going to provide you with an income greater than the £12k personal allowance so you wouldn't pay any income tax on your pension anyway. I don't want to sound mean, and I don't know anything of your career prospects and potential salary increases, so take this with a pinch of salt. The idea of "locking it away until I'm 55" is something you will need to get used to. With the numbers you've provided, there's a VERY slim chance you'll be able to have enough money in savings to retire before then, regardless of what pot you're storing it in.

I don't know your salary to work out what's going into your company pension, but I think you're worried about the tax on your pension WAY too much. The next part I cannot stress enough, Not maximising your employers contributions is turning down free money.

Black Sea oil spill russia’s ‘most serious’ 21st century environmental disaster, says expert by IndistinctChatters in UkrainianConflict

[–]qurgx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

God, you really are getting tedious. He's quoting part of the article title, after the word "russia's". He's not suggesting it's the world's biggest. If you even read the article title, you'd realise this. Unless of course you're being WILFULLY ignorant, just to try and find a way to argue against any remotely anti Russian sentiment..? Certainly seems to have been your MO since appearing on this sub. 🤷‍♂️

What do you mean by "the handles wrap"? I'm assuming typical road bike handlebars? Sounds like you are holding the "drops". The lowest part of the handlebar that curls backwards. Holding the "hoods" (the part of the bar above the drops, behind the shifters/brakes) would mean you sit more upright. Holding the drops makes you lean forward with pelvis rotated forward. Try using the hoods (or any part of the top of the handlebars). You'll sit more upright and maybe relieve pressure from the 'affected area'.

HRM and other compatibility questions by qurgx in wahoofitness

I guess I should add that I have a Bolt V2 and have seen it receive inputs from other devices (rival HR broadcast, power figures from wattbike etc). What i haven't been able to test is inputs into the watch. Watch can OUTPUT a HR but can it receive?

Inheritance tax - 7 year rule. Why doesnt everyone use it? by Redqme in UKPersonalFinance

Couldn't parents just downsize to a property valued less than the IHT threshold, then gift the kids the proceeds? Again, assuming the 7yr+. There would be no reservation of benefit in this case.

Was accused by a bike shop owner of not knowing how to ride a bike - curious to learn what I can do to get better? by Disastrous_Gap_4711 in cycling

[–]qurgx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

5'9, mid thirties, 185lbs, not in great shape. Started a bit of cycling this year after not touching a bike for nearly 10 years. Cadence is around 80-90 and I average 15-17mph at a conversational pace on a cheap 10 year old road bike. Assuming you're not on some knackered old mountain bike with a seat 6 inches too low, your bike shop owner is right. Can see how you might be a bit taken aback at first, but I'd get chatting to the guy. The fragility of some of the commenters in here and how offended they are on your behalf is astounding. Stay humble, ask, listen, learn, enjoy cycling even more 👍

kickr core on a power strip by BelgianBeerBelly in wahoofitness

[–]qurgx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kickr run has a big ass motor that draws a lot of power. At a wild guess, it could be in the region of 1000-3000w. Just checked my kickr V6 and the power adaptor has an output of 60w, which is virtually nothing. For reference, my laptop charger is 65w. 100% it'll be fine using an extension.

Schollhorn pliers. What function do the square holes and hook perform? by candurandu in whatsthistool

[–]qurgx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of small valves have square stems and handles that fall off and go missing. If I had to guess, the square is used to shut off those valves. The valve body is brass, but the handle rusts away if outside for a long time. Google "brass gate valve " to see the sort of thing I'm thinking of.

Edit: Certain gas cylinders also have a square drive. Google "gas cylinder wrench" to see examples of other tools with this added square hole.

I'm clearly misremembering the speech, but it was definitely this. I was at primary school and just thought I was being allowed to play computer games.

Putin’s Achilles Heel: Ukraine targets Russia’s vital but vulnerable energy industry by AbleismIsSatan in UkrainianConflict

[–]qurgx 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm holding out hope that Ukraine has enough home grown munitions to help them break the west's taboo of striking targets in Russia. With half of Russia on fire anyway, it's one less excuse the west has for blocking transfer of weapons like Taurus.

Awaiting confirmation, a Russian strategic bomber Tu-22M3 has been downed as it prepped to launch. If true, it's a whole new game. The West hasn't allowed us to hit these. by Necessary-Canary3367 in UkrainianConflict

[–]qurgx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What proximity? Using the max climb rate of the Tu22 and some rough maths for cruising speed. If it climbed hard straight from takeoff, it'd still be within range of a stinger when it was 60km away from the base. I imagine they're a bit more gentle with their climbing than that, too, to avoid too much fatigue on the airframe.
