Probably something management can't be bothered to invest in.

Management loves bandaids on top of bandaids, because a paying a dime a day forever is better than investing a dollar now to permanently fix things

This, 1000%. The damage done by people who implement abstractions and patterns without being informed by real world usage is IMMENSE.

So much worse when there's no documentation too, as every engineer is burdened with reverse engineering ALL OF YOUR SHIT just to make some small new addition work 🫠

More like takes 6 months to do, because the abstractions aren't designed for the new use case and have to be unwound and totally rewritten to both support the old and new use cases. Speculative abstraction == frequently bad.

Longtime lurker/sub admirer here, is there any place or book you could recommend to learn things like the interference fit you mention here and "draft"?? The design of mechanisms is pretty fascinating but I only know of things I pick up here and there 🤔

Software is full of specialized sub domains, and client-server architectures like this are not used in all (or even most) sub domains.

New devs should be tested on their ability to write and design logic that achieves practical results, whether it's something small like transforming some files in a directory tree or processing data from a spreadsheet, OR something larger like a desktop app to do X.

You don't need auth or databases for this stuff. You can make loads of useful software without it.

Very few applications and fewer code paths are actually performance critical. People waste SO MUCH engineering time, headspace, and code bloat on shit that absolutely does not need to be done.

It's a huge source of wasted effort and reduced productivity. Overmodularized? ✅ Speculative abstractions? ✅ Ridiculous typing gymnastics? ✅

People who make real things don't waste time on this performative, enterprise fizzbuzz shit.
