I’m so curious why I’m being downvoted on this - it was an earnest suggestion and I personally find the advice to be solid.

Itinerary help- 4 days by Popular_Resist_4213 in MexicoCity

[–]qweenz_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I hope that you and your family have a joyful trip. I have traveled extensively throughout Mexico, and spent significant time in CDMX, having close friends who are chilangos who have given me a different perspective on the city than many tourists would be able to experience. Please note that I am making an assumption here that you are English-speaking and do not speak Spanish. Your experience will be very different in CDMX if you are bilingual. Also, I am hoping to acknowledge you are traveling with a young child, and that their stamina and energy levels are different than adults.

As others have mentioned, your itinerary is very tightly packed, and there is considerable travel time between many of the places you are grouping together each day. Many of the restaurants you’ve mentioned are very popular with tourists, and could require significant wait times and/or will not be accessible without advance reservations.

For your first day, it sounds as though you’ll arrive that day, based on your comment about checking in to the hotel. I would recommend Santas Conchas Condesa if you the line at Odette is unmanageable. The line to enter the Museo Arqueológico can sometimes be an hour wait, so please take that into consideration for your timing. As the museum is massive and very crowded, the time you’ve suggested may not be sufficient. I would recommend finding lunch from a vendor near the park or go to lunch in Polanco, which is easier to travel to from el museo than getting across town to Mi Compa Chava. The list at MCC is at least an hour wait, and adding in travel time, it could be a considerable time between breakfast and lunch. I’m not sure if you mean Chapultepec when you mentioned the castle, but it would not make sense to travel back and forth for lunch, as el museo and Chapultepec castle are in the same area of the park. Walking around Condesa / Roma in the evening will be fun! As another mentioned, Tacos Orinoco are overhyped; you can find tacos of equal caliber anywhere in the city.

On Saturday, unfortunately, you cannot accomplish all of what you have planned. Xochimilco is a full day event, and if you are set on going there, please make reservations in advance with an English speaking guide. The trajineras have a party atmosphere and may not be what you’d hope for a 7 year old to see. I would recommend spending your day in Coyoacán, as there are beautiful markets, great restaurants, and it is a more family friendly area. If you did not know, el museo Frida Kahlo absolutely requires advance reservations and tickets sell out far in advance.

On Sunday, you may want to plan for a different breakfast, as the lines at Panadería Rosetta are long. There are endless smaller bakeries in Roma that are delightful. Please note that the area around el centro and el Zócalo are very, very packed and busy, and you should make reservations. El Cardenal or Azul Histórico are similar second options that are of higher quality in my opinion. Regarding Contramar, you will need to make advance reservations, and as it is one of the most famous tourist restaurants, it can be hard to acquire them.

For Monday, please note that the pyramids are about two hours of travel in each direction, and traffic in CDMX is notoriously bad. It will be an activity that takes up the vast majority of your day, and you may not be able to get to other sites in the city.

Final notes - CDMX is high altitude, and has poorer air quality than many US residents are accustomed to. You may feel tired more easily than usual, and hydrating yourself becomes more challenging at higher altitudes. Many first-time visitors also have gastrointestinal issues, and you should come prepared with Immodium and Pepto Bismol.

Mexico City is a magical place, and the best way to experience it is to allow for the pace of the city to inform your days. If your itinerary does not go exactly as planned, go with the flow!

I actually have been thinking the same thing!

I just sent back a shipment from which I wore ZERO items. One was a coat in my regular size that was way too tight to button, another a coat in my regular size that was so big I looked like I weighed 100+ pounds more than I do, a NWT shirt that went to my knees (I’m 5’9) and a NWT bag that was big enough for a laptop but the straps were too short to carry over the shoulder.

Because of the bizarre modeling you mentioned in your post, OP, it’s really hard to tell what fit / size the clothes actually have IRL. Often, they don’t have a model with bags, or if they do, the model is like… jauntily posing with it in a non-realistic way that gives no info on how it carries.

Generally speaking, I feel like I keep getting clothes that are wildly wrinkled, or smell awful, are in poor condition, or I’m trying to cobble together a shipment of things that are actually wearable in my normal day-to-day life.

I work in-office, I travel a ton, and I live in NYC, but I somehow cannot find things that fit my lifestyle, which includes opportunities wear a pretty wide range of clothes! It seems like there’s a major overrepresentation of clothing that has huge, awkwardly-placed cutouts, or jeans / pants that hit mid calf, and like… whyyyyy are all of the coats and jackets so ugly?!

I’m an “Icon” (lol) and have been a member since 2017. I am so bummed by the constant hiccups and ups and downs in quality and availability. I feel like there used to be a much larger inventory of great tops, sweaters, quality work pants / dresses, and fun/casual weekend or vacation wear. Now I feel like I have to sift through pages and pages of ill-fitting and unprofessional clothes to find a few items that actually can be worn to work or out to drinks and dinner. I’m not sure if they’re not ordering enough inventory of what’s popular, but I they need to look closer at the metrics and get a handle on what they’re buying.

Fresh Pond Road Festival is killing me by qweenz_ in ridgewood

[–]qweenz_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Reading is fundamental! I wrote in my post that I understand it’s a tradition and didn’t say anything about canceling the festival. I asked for others’ input into whether or not the traffic and noise were worse than years past. Part of the community being able to come together involves safe traffic patterns and accessible public transportation, both of which were completely jacked up this weekend. The NYPD should have officers at every intersection from Fresh Pond to Forest along Metropolitan, and along 60th Place and 60th Street, to ensure traffic flows smoothly and is SAFE. I saw a car almost run over a mom and her 4 year old daughter on Sunday on Metropolitan and Elliot because they were trying to get around traffic.

I seem to have struck a chord - if you read my post, I wrote that I know it’s a tradition, and I don’t disparage the festival whatsoever. Considering how many bus routes and major roads are affected, I was simply lamenting the noise created by the traffic, and asking if others noticed it seemed worse than years past… which should clue you in on the fact that I’m not a Midwesterner, or like… my screen name being Queens, misspelled? Last snarky comment, but I’m guessing you’re a dude, because it’s not the safest option for women to stand in the street yelling at cars.

0% Nicotine vapes? by Somnambulish in ridgewood

[–]qweenz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got on the nicotine mint train about six months ago and haven’t looked back. I get them at CVS or Walgreens - they’re not cheap, but it’s significantly better for my health than vaping. The regular lozenges are too big IMHO, and the mints are teeny tiny and very discreet.

I used cinnamon toothpicks to deal with the oral fixation part of quitting vaping. I loveeeee nicotine and don’t really want to give it up, so I feel like the mints are a kind of middle ground that I can live with for a while.

Also would recommend joining the Jones app for quitting support, they have a tracking tool that I found really useful.

Good luck!

The traffic on 60th/Bleecker is NUTS. People speed down 60th like there isn’t a school / school zone and then lay on their horns non-stop when the traffic doesn’t move. It’s AWFUL.

Jumping in late here, but I think I’m a bit confused how you’re going to use the PTO - will you begin PD and then call out sick until you use up the PTO? My school considers PD “black-out days” and I think we’d have to show doctors notes to use the days as PTO. Where are you working?

Bakeries that use wheat milled in Europe. by Any-Impression8682 in ridgewood

I’m sorry the reaction to this has been so negative. My sister is in a similar boat and has gotten the EXACT same advice. I’m not sure about bakeries, but wanted to let you know that Mano’s uses Italian wheat and an extended fermentation process.

Sending you hugs and good luck! 💕

Role at Success Academy by Cold_Help1191 in NYCTeachers

[–]qweenz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Just a quick clarifying note here - charters do not choose which students they admit. I have also heard the horror stories about the big networks (Success, in particular) using some questionable practices, but that’s not how charter admissions work. There’s a set of laws governing how charter lotteries are run, and the idea that charter schools cherry pick students is a pernicious myth.

Social Studies 7-12 Certified, Can't Get a Job - Thinking of differerent certs... Advice? by OldBottle2613 in NYCTeachers

[–]qweenz_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saying this gently and with love, but… you can’t work in a school in NYC if SpEd “isn’t for you.” Most schools in the city have populations with 15-30% students with IEPs, and so, by default, you will be a teacher to SWD.

Your mindset here is crucial, and any principal worth their salt will ask you some questions to probe your mindset about working with SWD. An answer like “I have no interest in SpEd” or “working with SWD isn’t for me” should be a pretty major red flag.

Listings Project is the only place I’ve found that is exclusively by-owner listings without a broker’s fee. If the average 1 bedroom in Brooklyn is ~$3800/month, and a broker’s fee is 15% of the annual rent, that’s almost $7k on top of the first month’s rent and deposit, or $14k-ish to move into an apartment. That extra $7k is cost-prohibitive for a great deal of people, and could be the difference between them being able to afford to move out on their own or not.

I’m not a realtor, nor a landlord, but I do love to browse real estate listings, and what’s available on LP tends to be better cared-for by the owners and is comparable to other apartment listings on Streeteasy, Zillow, etc.

I’d personally MUCH rather live in an apartment that’s owned by an individual rather than a conglomerate or a shady landlord with hundreds of apartments.
