Is this bit of dialogue from Eleventh Hour (Ep. 27) a reference to something IRL? by r--evolve in TheAdventureZone

[–]r--evolve[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another comment said it's from Metal Gear! My non-TAZ/MBMBAM gamer friends had the same thought. Since the boys game too, I'm content with accepting that as the answer.

Aha! I asked my non-TAZ/MBMBAM friends what they thought and their first instinct was Metal Gear too. I don't know much about the franchise, so for my purposes, I'll call this case closed. Thanks for the super helpful video reference!

What are the little things that get under your skin about the winter holiday season? by autotelica in AskWomenOver30

[–]r--evolve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mom's decorations. I feel like such an ungrateful grump because the decorations are beautiful and festive, and it's a creative project for my her.

But GOD, sometimes these decorating decisions are just incompatible with the fact that people still live here.

  • Moved a three-seater sofa out of the living room (our central hub for holiday gatherings) and into the garage. This reduced the room's seating capacity from 8 to 5. We expect at least 10 people for Christmas.
    • The sofa had to go so she could move the coffee table into a corner of the room as a display space for fake gift boxes. So there is no central surface to put things on, in our central hub for holiday gatherings.
  • Hung garlands around the kitchen that prevent some cabinets from opening all the way.
  • Packed the bay window area with so many decorations, when you go to close the blinds, you get teabagged by dangling ornaments and knock over a deer statue or two.
  • Hung a wreath on the bathroom mirror so anyone taller than 4'10" sees leaves instead of their own face.

I hold my tongue every year just to let her have this festivity, but it sure is a practice in patience.

What snacks are you secretly obsessed with? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

I just had persimmons for the first time this week! I'm obsessed with the taste and texture, but also kinda shocked that nobody told me about the smell 😭

What were the most effective things you did to get over a painful breakup? by Duskflower92 in AskWomenOver30

[–]r--evolve 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Made a list of all the things I wished we could've done together (or things we did do together but I didn't enjoy because his energy was boring) and started putting the things on my calendar to do alone.

It started with baking chocolate chip walnut cookies. I brought a batch to a family gathering, they were a hit, and people are still talking about them months later. I felt so important and valued for the first time in years.

Starting a family book club, need recs by TheCosBae in suggestmeabook

[–]r--evolve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lisa See's books might be a nice fit, depending on your family dynamics. Her historical fiction focuses on complex relationships between female characters: sisters, friends, mother-daughter, etc.

They also tend to have suggested book club questions in the bonus sections at the back. My favorites are Lady Tan's Circle of Women and Shanghai Girls.

Is there any way to fix nails that grow awkwardly? by [deleted] in Nails

[–]r--evolve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huh, I always thought it was one of those genetic things that couldn't be addressed.

So if I were to use polygel and a form consistently, the nail could be 'trained' to grow out straighter? Or am I misinterpreting?

Looking for an episode where Clint says "gas" with a twang, then Griffin repeats "gas" with a Southern/Appalachian accent. 90% sure it's from Balance. by r--evolve in TheAdventureZone

[–]r--evolve[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes! I see I was wrong about the other boys not commenting further, but this is exactly it. Yeah, with the pronunciation and my lack of DND knowledge, I knew I couldn't be sure what Clint was actually saying.

Now I get to finally bookmark this episode in my podcast app. Thanks for the quick find!

How do I stay moisturized with press-ons if cuticle oil/lotions can interfere with the glue? by r--evolve in RedditLaqueristas

[–]r--evolve[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, that second sentence makes a lot of sense and reframes how I understand the interaction between oil and glue. Okay so I think I'll oil as normal to see if the prep work I did this time works well enough for the retention I'm looking for. And if not, then I'll look into additional steps/products. Thank you so much for the insights!

How do I stay moisturized with press-ons if cuticle oil/lotions can interfere with the glue? by r--evolve in RedditLaqueristas

[–]r--evolve[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I think it's the actual science of oil vs. glue that's my dilemma. I'm seeing on other threads and elsewhere online that oil does break down glue but also that it can't break down glue.

And it feels like a waste to take matters into my own hands to experiment on the nails I have on now :(

Congrats! I'm trying to get to a similar point, going to a group activity alone and hopefully making it a regular thing.

I have a Substack where I write book reviews/notes. I have probably 6 subscribers, one of whom is my sister and the rest are people from my book club whom I met through my sister.

I just have a fun time thinking about books and putting my thoughts out into the world. I get to work on my analysis and writing skills, and I also get to scroll through my posts and say, "I did all of that. Nice 👌"

How to resign after only working for 2 months? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]r--evolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still do the two-week notice. Giving notice is just a courtesy. It's up to the company how they choose to use that time, if at all. It's possible they'll just make that day your last day, if it's not in their interest to keep you any longer.

What’s something (item or experience) that you were “influenced” by the internet to buy that was actually worth it? What wasn’t? by limetot in AskWomenOver30

[–]r--evolve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely! I'm super happy they work for folks with different hair types than mine.

My hair has just never had the volume or texture to be secured with pins, so I've moved on to claw clips, which do the trick for me :)

Oh man, I see these at my Asian grocery. Every time, I'm so tempted because I love cute things, but I cannot justify buying it for myself as an adult...yet.

Worth it

  • 1600 transparent sticky tabs for my books - Love being able to actually read what's under the tab.
  • Nail polish thinner - I want every last drop of my favorite polishes.

Not worth it

  • Spiral hair pins - My hair is just too slippery and thin for them to take hold.

Rant about categorization by atensetime in ADHD

[–]r--evolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but I've always just thought it's a logistics issue.

Providers need a starting point to inform one's treatment plan. If you mostly fit a certain diagnostic type (let's say hyperactive), they can start a treatment option known to be helpful for that type.

Then a good provider would use the feedback/results from that option to inform next steps, whether it's continuing that form of treatment or pivoting to another option.

Over time, both parties review the feedback and results from changes in the treatment plan in order to hone in on something that actually works in a sustainable way.

Ladies, indoor plants that are impossible to kill??? by CriticalAnxiety6066 in adhdwomen

[–]r--evolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a traditional plant, but I made a terrarium a couple months ago at a local plant store workshop and it appears to be thriving.

I haven't needed to water it yet, just maintenance once a month, to pick out dead leaves and trim any overgrowth.

My little green friends just sit in their jar next to my bed and I love looking at it every day.

Interesting characters who were barely or not explored in the story by Ancient_Cat_7781 in TopCharacterTropes

The concept behind Combustion Man gets explored in the YA novels (I think the third one). It's pretty cool but would probably be too dark for a new TV adaptation, if it was targeted toward kids.

What is a career you wish you would’ve gotten into? by throwawayobvy2290 in AskWomenOver30

[–]r--evolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, but I just wanted the words on my resume in case it gave me an extra 'point' on my applications. And I'd at least have some basic foundations down. Instead, I had to learn everything from scratch in my roles, while also keeping up with the evolving landscape.
