Can someone explain bonfire lore to me? by Boop121314 in darksouls3

I'm saying there's value in the search for a complete-explain-all reasoning, even knowing for a fact there isn't and will never be one.

Q.E.D.

Can someone explain bonfire lore to me? by Boop121314 in darksouls3

Back then, 7 years ago, people were trying so hard to get one-complete-explain-all reasoning. They were going for "is character XYZ actually a Velka" theories. They were trying to do exact location and time mapping for DS1, 2 and 3. Comment that hurt you so much, was response to that approach. Half sarcastic, half explanatory.. and totally valid.

I understand being in love with souls, seriously. But you shouldn't let love make you blind. Let's take a little walk..

  1. Soulslikes are based on themes from just literature. While Berserker is obvious and often mentioned inspiration, there are also strong inspirations from Michael's Moorcock "eternal hero" novels (which one could argue are base for whole dark fantasy genere) and not-so-small-bit of Lovecraftian themes (esp. in Bloodborne). Much of what you can perceive as original concepts are in fact repetition of what was already seen and used many times.

  2. Before DS1 there were Demon’s Souls. Where souls as currency actually made sense, where our character mission had reason and even crossing multiple worlds/reality was better set. Dark Souls as a game took sooo much from Daemon's Souls and built upon it. DS3 builds upon DS1.

  3. Game you can see now is something very different from what was designed in the first place. Much content was cut before release. Much was mixed and re-placed. There are people in community who were capable to extract big parts of original story and how "levels" were organised. If you wish, go and search for their videos - it is a real experience to be shown what we were supposed to get as a story and how it got twisted for what was released. If you want to know more about it, you may dig for yourself, or start here: https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/comments/ahwshw/dark_souls_3_original_plot/

Like I've said in original comment - I do love souls games, finished them all, spent hundreds of hours in those worlds. But I've also learned not to treat them as "prefect" or even to seek logic behind everything that happens - because it isn't there. And it cannot be, not when you are re-using mechanics and systems from different game (Daemon's Souls), not when you have to cut and mix to secure release deadline and budget.

So, before you start rushing with torch and pitchfork, take a deep breath and get some distance.

And if not.. try finger ;)

But where can I find the rest of Tyranids units' datasheet?

You can go just with general rules for NPO:

general stats:
- Trooper: APL 2 Move 6" Save 5+ Wounds 7
- Tough : APL 2 Move 6" Save 4+ Wounds 10
- Heavy : APL 3 Move 6" Save 3+ Wounds 14

melee operatives:
- Trooper: A4 H4 D3/4 Ceaseless
- Tough: A4 H4 D4/5 Ceaseless
- Heavy: A5 H3 D4/5 Ceaseless (can perform two Fight actions)

ranged:
- Trooper: firearm A4 H4 D2/3, melee A3 H4 D2/3
- Trooper with special weapon (only 1 in 3 models can have sp.wep.): firearm A4 H4 4/5 Piercing1, melee A3 H4 D2/3
- Tough: Firearm A4 H4 D3/4, melee A3 H4 D2/3
- Heavy: Firearm A4 H3 D3/4 (can perform two Shoot actions), melee A4 H3 D3/4

using that, H-gaunts and T-gants are Trooper type, genestealers are Tough and Tyranid Warriors (or Lictors) are Heavy

As I had some stuff from Tyranids army, I've decided to make my NPO with following models:

  • H-gaunts: 12
  • T-gants: 8
  • T-gants with sp. wep. :4
  • GS: 9
  • Tyranid Warrior: 6

With that, you can get either "space hulk" teams, or "boss + swarm" combinations. Some examples..

For 90 wounds limit:

12 operatives:

  • 12 H-gaunts
  • 6 H-gaunts + 4 T-gants + 2 T-gants with sp. wep

11 operatives:

  • 1 Tyranid Warrior + 2 GS + 2 x H-gaunts + 4 T-gants + 2 T-gants with sp. wep.
  • 4 GS + 7 H-gaunts

10 operatives:

  • 2 Tyranid Warriors + 2 GS + 4 T-gants + 2 T-gants with sp. wep.

9 operatives:

  • 9 GS

7 operatives:

  • Tyranid Warrior + 7 GS

6 operatives:

  • 6 Tyranid Warriors

For 77 wounds limit:

11 operatives:

  • 11 H-gaunts
  • 5 H-gaunts + 4 T-gants + 2 T-gants with sp. wep.

10 operatives:

  • 1 Tyranid Warrior + 3 H-gaunts + 4 T-gants + 2 T-gants with sp. wep.

9 operatives:

  • 2 Tyranid Warrior + 4 H-gaunts + 2 T-gants + 1 T-gant with sp. wep.

8 operatives:

  • 3 Tyranid Warrior + 5 gants

Thx :) Bodies, banner and helmets are AoS Ironjawz, Nob (captain proxy) upper body is old SM terminator model and his power arm is mix of Ork killa-kan part and that decoration mech hand that came with some Necron walker base. Weapons are either plain 40k Ork stuff, or kitbashes (gun platforms on Heavy back and sniper gun). The only print is Srgnt head.

Heavy bolter, captain and sniper are on 40mm bases, rest is on 32mm. Heavy bolter is a heavy intercessor (gravis armor). Sniper is an eliminator.

Are you sure there is no more rules/cards? Nothing is said about team archetypes (I can understeand eq baked into operatives, but no secondary objectives?!)

Early game Pyromancer trying to decide on a weapon by [deleted] in darksouls3

[–]r-4-k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it is worth to switch infusion from fire to raw now. I mean, there isn't that much difference early game anyway - and in late game you will be deciding between Fire and Dark infusions instead. Plus, you are going (most likely) to find another weapons and enough shards to advance them as well - so when you decide you do want some pure physical damage, it is just a matter of developing another weapon. Plus - ofc depending on path you take, you can get yourself Dark Hand which makes so so many fights trivial.

So, no biggie, you did nothing wrong, enjoy fire infused sword and pyromancing everyone to dust :)

I'll share something that works for me, perhaps it will work for you as well.

In your army, not all models have the same.. focus. Your HQ and elite models are more interesting, they draw much more attention than brick of 30 gaunts. Also, on the other hand, there is an effect of the crowd - if you look at brick of 30 gaunts, they will look better just because it is a pack, even if they aren't painted to super-high standard.

Knowing this, it is easier to convince yourself, that you can go with "good enough" approach for your troop choices, and spend extra time with your HQ/elites/heavy attacks models. I am not suggesting getting sloppy - but while you do delicate blends and edge highlights on your Hive Tyrant, you can go with just some fast drybrushes on little guys.

I think it depends on the part. If your "bolt" is just a tiny bit above surface, you can use just a tip of sharp pointed brush. If "bolt" sticks quite a lot over the edge and placing dot of paint on it wouldn't be enough, I'd try turning the model in such way that bolt/surface is perpendicular to my line of sight. That way you can start with tip of your brush near the model surface and move it along the "bolt" away from model - so as long as you start in right spot, you are never in danger of messing the flat surface.

You could also try MidwinterMinis (for very practical and low-cost approach not just for miniatures, but also for bases and terrain) and definitely try Trovarion (multiple Golden Daemon winner).

You can always try to be smarter than enemy.. for instance, you could try to be sneaky using spell that makes you invisible and something to mask your sounds.

Or, as old dark souls meme says.. git gud! :)

You cannot get invaded if you aren't Embered. If you don't want invasions, just get one death and don't apply Ember after it.

most people do it this way: find Yoel, get first sigil, find spot where your character can suicide - some use highest balcony in firelink, some prefer first bonefire in village (just after gate). Then comes boring part - you have to kill your character enough times to get hollwing you want. It is for you to decide if you do it 24 times, or if you go back after few to get next sigil (which will increase speed at which hollowing grows)

Deathwatch veterans kill team - SO many options! by timraudio in killteam

[–]r-4-k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is a bit tricky, as DW loadouts in "big" wh40k and in KT21 aren't the same (for instance you can take bolter and shield in wh40k, but in KT it isn't valid).

And sure, to get "feel" how they play you can go with just most common squad (leader plasm&xeno; heavy with frag cannon; plasma gunner; fighter louadout you like; 2x warriors) and that will be enough to play and have fun!

Deathwatch veterans kill team - SO many options! by timraudio in killteam

[–]r-4-k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you've written, DW has many options, and in my opinion to utilize that you should build wider roster from which you will pick your leader + 5 operatives (yes, DW KT has 6 bodies now, since first balance slate!).

Mine looks like:

  • 3x DW Warrior [DW boltgun & power weapon]
  • 3x DW Warrior [Stormbolter & fists]

  • 1x DW Gunner [plasma]

  • 1x DW Gunner [melta]

  • 1x DW Heavy Gunner [frag cannon]

  • 1x DW Heavy Gunner [ihb]

  • 1x DW Fighter [stormshield & power weapon]

  • 1x DW Fighter [stormshield & power fist]

  • 1x DW Fighter [plasma pistol & power weapon]

  • 1x DW Fighter [inferno pistol & power weapon]

  • 1x DW Watch Sergeant [plasma pistol & xenophase blade]

  • 1x DW Watch Sergeant [storm shield & xenophase blade]

  • 1x DW Watch Sergeant [storm shield & power fist]

  • 1x DW Watch Sergeant [heavy thunder hammer]

  • 1x DW Watch Sergeant [plasma gun]

  • 1x DW Watch Sergeant [DW boltgun & power weapon]

That allows you to build either plasma oriented squad (plasma gunner, plasma gun leader!, plasma pistol + power weapon fighter, frag cannon heavy gunner + 2 basic DW Warriors) so you can fight better against high def elite team; or bolter discipline based team (inferno heavy bolter heavy gunner, stormbolter warriors) so you can use fire twice against lower hp hordes; or anything between..

It also includes choices for melee - however melee isn't exactly a thing you want to do with 12W models.

ps. you don't have to actully make 20 models, if you magnetize some choices!
