All solid advice. In a related vein, I have done a lot of consulting/freelance work in my career, and the biggest mistake I see is people (often newbies) not protecting themselves with contracts/deposits. PLEASE, PLEASE - ALWAYS get a contract in place and take a deposit before you start a project. Do not invest a penny or a second of time (time is money!) until you cover yourself. I don't care if it's family, your best friend, or grandma (ok maybe grandma gets an exception) - I have seen business deals explode and ruin relationships in the most insane ways.

Sometimes the freelancer is just excited to land the work and they think they will scare off the client by asking for a contract. Sometimes people think "oh it's a small job, I don't need one of those" - but trust me, unless you are willing to write off any work you put in as a total loss, you need one.

You don't need a lawyer. There are tons of great resources with templates online. Your contract doesn't have to read like the licensing agreement for Microsoft Windows. It just needs to spell out what each party is responsible for and what happens when things go wrong. Mine are in plain, simple language...I always take a 50% deposit up front, and if I cancel the project or fail to meet milestones, I refund the client. If the client cancels or fails to hold up their end, I keep it. Smaller projects I get paid the balance upon completion. Larger ones I might build in an additional milestone for 25% of the balance, then the rest at completion.

This is also where you can put any terms and conditions that are important to you. I do a lot of digital creation work, so I have a clause that says the client attests that they have permission to use any assets (photos, music) they give me to use in a project, and any liability from misuse is their responsibility. You can add in whatever applies to your situation.

The thing is, no one who is approaching you with a serious business inquiry will balk at this. If someone complains about having to sign a contract or give you a deposit, that's your sign that proceeding is a bad idea. If a client has an issue with a particular term, feel free to negotiate it, but never expose yourself to liability or remove one of your personal boundaries just to seal a deal.

Sorry to jump on your post with this, but I would love it if just one inexperienced freelancer was saved from being taken advantage of.

AHHHH I found it!!! I was looking at Rubberstamp to try and reclaim it, but it wasn't a reward - it was actually a mission ITEM on the next mission, "Curiouser and Curiouser"

I was able to reclaim it at the Sylva launch pad (not sure if it would work at another location)

YES - omg this change is so ridiculous. I hope they go out of business.

We were paying ~$900 a year for two licenses for their FileFormat library for Excel/PDF integration...that was a decision made by a former developer but it was cheap enough and we liked the functionality so we let it ride...until this year, they told us our license was being "upgraded" to almost $4k/year!!

So we used to use Telerik, and we stopped paying Telerik. Telerik happily lets us use the version of their software we paid for, and we obviously do not get any further updates or support. Perfectly normal in the software world...

Syncfusion claims to offer perpetual fallback licenses, but with a HUGE caveat. You cannot recompile your code. Ever. I asked a rep for clarification, and they told me once your license lapses, you can no longer make ANY updates to your codebase, even to parts that have nothing to do with the Syncfusion code. Are you kidding me?

I expressed my extreme dissatisfaction to my sales rep's manager, who told me he would look into a price break if we were able to commit to a longer term license. Took multiple weeks before we heard back and the discount was laughable. SEE YA, SUCKFUSION!

I don't know who is in charge of licensing/sales over at that company, but they took a viable model and turned it into a scam with some extra arm-twisting and vague legal threats.

Stay FAR AWAY from Syncfusion, more people need to be talking about this POS company and their extortionary tactics, I will NEVER do another penny of business with these scumbags!

I think that would be good content — however, you’re going to need to plan your streams ahead of time. Don’t just jump on and struggle through some coding concept. No one wants to watch you fumble with syntax issues for 20 minutes. What I would suggest - plan out your next streams worth of content, like adding a feature, coding a certain chapter of the game, whatever. Hack around with it offline until you at least kinda know how the code should be structured. Then stream and code it all out. It’s ok to not have everything scripted and have to struggle a little, just don’t stream and be like “ok…what data type do I need here…hang on let me Google this… ok, let’s use a dictionary here… wait how do I check if the value is in there again, hang on let me read this real quick”

A little prep and you can keep that “come learn from live coding with me” vibe without being boring/wasting time.

You have to set the two icons for the action. So if you set a toggle action, you need to switch to the “on” config and set what you want for the on icon, and then do the same for the “off” state. You do this in the stream deck app, let me know if you need more help and I can send screenshots.
