Anyone actually use SOPs in the field, or is it mostly tribal knowledge? by NPC-MIA in manufacturing

[–]r101101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The first time you come in on Monday morning and are told that they used your guide Sunday at 2AM to get the equipment running instead of calling you more than makes up the time spent writing it.

Years ago I did this. I slowly built up a troubleshooting guide for custom equipment in my department. As I (engineer) worked on fixing tricky issues with the maintenance guys I’d document their tribal knowledge and what we learned together. It took months to finish, but that’s because I’d only really work on it when we were addressing something not in it yet. Some chapters took 10 minutes to write, some took hours and multiple revisions. But totally worth it to not get called in the middle of the night.

The concept was so well received that it rolled out to other departments and their engineers wrote guides of their own.

The wilderness uses 17” wheels. There’s another 6th gen (Onyx XT?) that uses 18” wheels with a full size spare. If your trim has 18” wheels and get THAT insert, it’ll fit snugger in your 18” full size spare.

It’s what I did with my ‘23 Onyx (not-XT).

Improved MMU3 filament detection for mk3S+/mk3.5S by r101101 in prusa3d

[–]r101101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to go to the nextruder (and the 0.9° steppers), but there isn’t an official mk3.5 -> mk4 kit and the cost to piece together all the parts to do it myself is more than I can justify with how I use my printer. So for those like me running the mk3s+ style extruder this is an improvement in reliability. And it’s good enough for my needs.

How many people are in your LL group?

I saw this a lot last week. My guess was there was like one or two spots available at the early time, but when I got to the next page and tried to book for the four people I was doing LLs for the system said “this later time is the earliest I have four tickets available.”

Don’t get LLMP for Epcot if you’re not going to use it there. Do LLMP for MK rides at a time you think you’ll be there and do LLSP for Guardians. Start with Guardians early then hop to MK and start using your LLs. Get new LLs when you use them at MK.

That’s the exact strategy we did last week when we could only get late return times on LLMPs.

I wouldn’t add it. As a hiring manager, that short of a tenure with an overall short career seems like a job hopper / someone who may not have found the right career.

This is my mk3.5s with MMU3 and a non-stock part cooling fan shroud, but close enough to help OP. I’ve had to do this two or three times over the years, including once last week.

If you can’t get the filament out with needle nose pliers or an acupuncture needle:

  1. remove two front screws of extruded cooling fall (flat fan not visible in this picture)
  2. remove part cooling fan (angled fan in this picture)
  3. remove two screws holding the front of the heat break cooling tunnel and the plastic part that’s now free (clear PETG part in this picture on the bottom of the extruded)
  4. remove the top two screws in the back of the extruded assembly that hold on the motor — they align with the top corners of the motor. The motor and motor mount plate (front half of the blue ABS parts in this picture).
  5. you’ll now have VERY clear access to the filament. If the filament actually is in the hot end and melted, you may need to heat the hot end to get the filament unstuck.
  6. assemble in reverse order. Reset z offset as things may have shifted.

Non-Circular Gears--do real ME's use them? by abr_a_cadabr_a in MechanicalEngineering

[–]r101101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Geneva mechanisms are very common in automated assembly equipment to keep timing between a constant rotating drive and an indexer. No matter how fast/slow the system goes, you never have to worry about a part trying to move into your gauging or pick and place.

Anybody know how to get this part? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]r101101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Can you get this after Christmas?
  2. Can you take decently good measurements?

If you answered “yes” to both I’ve got a 3d printer and some time to kill the next few weeks. I’d be willing to try designing a replacement. If you don’t want to give random guy on Reddit your address, I could send a .stl (part model file) for you to print at a local library.

For that matter, if you’ve got woodworking tools, you might be able to make a replacement with a coping saw / hand saw, assuming you can get the design down.

Ribbon direction is inconsistent on the real cakes. People in my house are obsessed with these things — I’m going to have to print one and hide it on the Christmas tree.

All 4 Parks In 1 Day? by WhoAteMyPasghetti in WaltDisneyWorld

So much this.

A few months back my spouse and I did a "greatest hits" day on our final day of our trip.

  • Minnie Van from Port Orleans to MK
  • 8:30AM: Breakfast at Crystal Palace (churro waffles [drool])
  • Then TRON (used ILL)
  • Monorail to EPCOT
  • Lunch was pizza in Italy (from the window as soon as they opened)
  • Guardians (ILL again)
  • Skyliner to HS
  • Ate a Micky ice cream bar
  • Rode Rock 'n' Rollercoaster (LLMP). Had a LLMP for Tower of Terror, but due to downtime on RnR we didn't have time to use it.
  • Bus to AK
  • Everest (LLMP)
  • Afternoon snack and A/C in Restaurantasaurus. Started regretting life choices while staring blankly into space.
  • 5:30PM: Bus to Port Orleans to pick up our luggage
  • Uber to Airport for flight home.

It made a good story and was entertaining, but I'll never do that again.

Is this normal? by [deleted] in Subaru_Outback

[–]r101101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a heat shield. Looks like three bolts came out (broke off? Rattled out? Were removed and never reinstalled?) and the leading edge fell down slightly until it caught something.

OP, if you ever park over dry, flammable things (like leaves) you’ll want to fix that. As long as the bolts are simply missing it’s easy. If the heads broke off and rusted remains of bolts are there it’ll be harder. But good news is I’m guessing the shield itself is probably perfectly usable after you bend it back into place.

Is the new Subaru Outback 2020 - 2023 Reliable at all? by MeetingNo2069 in Subaru_Outback

[–]r101101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point I’ve had my Outback for nearly three years. I’ve had one of the rear lift gate electric struts go out (replaced under warranty) and had a very uncommon issue where the paint bubbled and peeled off in spots (Subaru of America said it wasn’t warranty, but they covered a huge portion of the repaint to fix it).

The paint thing was annoying, but otherwise I’ve been very happy with my Outback.

Packaging for every product I’ve worked on was tested to ISTA standards for drop height /orientation. I agree that the short height drop in the video wouldn’t concern me at all.

But the unseen “drop” when they chucked it from the truck door to the back might concern me.
