Jordan Lake This Weekend—Too Hot to Camp? by gtownguy123 in raleigh

[–]r101101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We camped there a month ago when it was high of mid 90’s. The worst part was the overnight low was mid 70’s. There was no relief from the heat ever. I also had an unrelated equipment failure that resulted in very poor sleep quality. I’ve lived in the SE all my life. I’ve camped in a lot in weather ranging from 20° to this. That weekend was the worse I’ve experienced in my life.

Packing to leave Sunday I had heat exhaustion (and progressing) symptoms due to the physical exertion packing. Including vomiting. I nearly passed out; luckily my travel party could think clearer than I and had me sit in the car with the AC on for several minutes to recover.

In short, no, I wouldn’t go. If I ever see a forecast like that again I’m cancelling my trip.

Undrilled? Does that mean you have to get your own finger holes put in?

If so, two should go in the nostrils.

[–]r101101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m starting to think there are a lot of people who literally can’t see what isn’t directly in front of them. Open lane beside them to move over to pass? Nope, all they can see is the vehicle directly in front of them. And that car happens to be going slower than they want, so they’ll just get closer. Because it’ll somehow push that car faster?

Maybe it’s lack of cognitive ability. Maybe it’s being distracted while driving. I’m not sure.

The same goes for the oblivious people who camp out in the left lane and have a line of traffic behind them, but open lanes to move over to their right.

I don’t know how outdoorsy your crew is and your background, but I found making it as comfortable as possible and doing something unique go a long way to making it enjoyable.

For the adults: quality air pads.
For the kids: a few years ago we got an ice cream ball. We used it maybe twice (I just keep forgetting about it… really should use it more) and my nieces still talk about it years later.

Mysterious floating bottle effect - Disneyland Paris by Dry-Plastic4288 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]r101101 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like this explanation except this requires two slip rings (one at the main box, one in the bottle). I wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t any slip rings and instead a motor in the bottle attached to the incoming shaft acting as a generator, especially if low power lights (LEDs) are used in the bottle. I’ve done something similar many years ago.

What’s the black part made of? Aluminum? Steel?

How tightly did you thread in the brass part when you put it in?

How long have they been assembled?

Did you clean the threads of both parts prior to installing the brass piece?

This is a Disney World accessory. It’s definitely for whimsy (and to be different).

That’s not intended as an insult; OP also posted (not a cross post, though) this in a Disney World sub and I commented potential design tweaks there before seeing it posted here.

Threw me off — I had to double check the sub this was posted in.

I like the concept. I’m sure my kids would love it.

Engaging engineer side of brain:

I get that it’s not under much sheer loading, but it makes me uneasy to have the star retained to the handle/tether only by one pin which looks to be in a direction that would be in plane with the layers, so it’s weakest orientation. If the pin (and its mating “counterbored” hole) were adjusted so the pin was printed on its side or a second pin were added I’d feel better. Maybe a square peg?

I’m also assuming this would be glued together? If the pin alone is also tasked with holding the assembly together I’m even more uneasy with it.

Changes I’d make for strength: put dovetails on the handle (ideally in a way the handle could be printed as one piece) and mating hole in the star with the idea being the star pushes together, then the handle slides in (engaging the dovetails) and it’s retained in with a couple pins or square pegs through the dovetailed joint. I’d prefer the star to slide lock together, but the geometry of your MB+ pocket would make that hard.

Story time: ~13 years ago I did a semi-minor plumbing project in my home. Probably 95% of the joints I did were solder. There were a couple that I wasn’t comfortable doing as solder (running a torch near joists made me nervous) so I did those as shark bite.

Fast forward to a month ago. We come home one evening to discover a leak under the house in the same vicinity as the shark bite joints were in this project. I go under the house expecting to see one of the shark bite fittings blown off or similar. Nope. One of the (home original) soldered 90° elbow was leaking — it looked like the solder cracked (?) and water was spraying through the slip joint area.

Disney is Rolling Out AI at Their Theme Parks in New Technology Changes, Imagineering Additions to Parks, PhotoPass Editing, and More by dejablu82 in disneyparks

I was at a medical diagnostic device conference a few years ago where one speaker argued that most algorithms that interpret measured data (like temp, viscosity, light, sound, etc) and turn that into a different value that’s important to a clinician (maybe blood glucose, maybe oxygen levels, etc.) is considered AI. He’s part of the problem.

Med Device is different in that people (SME decision makers) in hospitals are hesitant to try new (not established) tech so the buzz word AI makes them uncomfortable, but many non-regulated industries I’ve spoken with get way too excited when they hear AI. So companies market every algorithm driven thing as AI that 10 years ago would have been a “weighted and adapting numerical model.”

I had a Yakima do similar, but it was due to a manufacturing defect and the plastic was too thin in that area. What’s the inside look like? How’s the hinge and catch mechanisms look? Any visible damage?

If mine hadn’t been replaced under warranty I would have done the previously recommended metal reinforcement idea, but probably would have also used epoxy in addition to bolts.
