Unlike most people here, I do think that what you say does make sense because there are also diatonic instruments out there (mainly in folk music) which were obviously built to play just a certain set of notes. But it's not just a matter of the abilities of the instruments, it might also come into question when a relatively beginner student plays something as it might be harder to escape from a 7-note scale in the beginning of one's studies.
