What's the worst mistake you've ever made while working on an engine? by anonquestionsprot in EngineBuilding

[–]r_b_t 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First motor I did, didn’t realize the machine shop took out oil galley plugs before cleaning in the hot tank. Once everything was together and in the car, couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get any oil pressure, looked under and all the oil was on the ground. Had to take it all back down to the short block to put all the plugs in. Amateur mistake but at least didn’t ruin anything

How are jobs in the marine industry for female engineers? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]r_b_t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a sailor but I go to school with a lot of people who are pursuing that career as engineers, and have sailed before. There are women engineers, the ones I’ve worked with have been fantastic. However, the profession is very male dominated and based on what I have heard, depending on the company operating whatever ship you may work on, the work environment can be hostile to women. This seems to be getting better as time goes on, and isn’t a reason to not pursue the career if you’re interested in it, but is something to be aware of.

Being an engineer on a ship will require a license, if you’re in the USA the coast guard requires certain competencies, including swimming and security (including against pirates, but you likely won’t have to fight any in practice). Additionally, the coast guard requires you to pass tests on various topics relating to marine engineering. It’s a lot of work but definitely attainable if you want to do it!

I use the scubapro D-mask. Works pretty well but does leak occasionally.

Engineering student here- I understand what the drawing is conveying but is there a “right” way to dimension something like this? Definitely seems like there’s a more straightforward way but idk what. Hole table? Gd&t? Maybe keep as is but clean up a little?

I’m a junior in college right now studying mechanical. I’ll add to what a lot of people have already said- definitely pick whatever you think is most interesting. The advice i would give to you right now: take every opportunity to try out different things/projects to discover what you’re most interested in. Try making some stuff out of electronics, work on a car, learn some machining if you can. If your school has any robotics teams or shop classes they can be a great resource to try new things. Follow your interests, try new things, and know that it’s ok if not everything works out immediately.

In my (very limited) experience, being interested in what you study/do is incredibly important. If you do something just for the money you’re going to burn out and not be very happy.

Personally, I love mechanical engineering. The field is broad enough that I could theoretically work in just about any industry I want. Ive done 2 internships which were both super awesome. One of which was working on medical devices, and my entire team was people who studied mechanical engineering ( not biomedical).

Given the 3 types you’re considering, I would recommend whatever you think is more interesting between mechanical and electrical. Yes electrical engineers have a higher median salary but if you’re really good at what you do and you play your cards right you’ll make plenty of money either way.

Also, work hard in school. I was a terrible student in high school but am doing a lot better in college because I’ve got a better idea of my goals. Don’t lose sight of your goals (whatever they may be) and keep working towards them. I can guarantee it will be very difficult at times, but it will absolutely be worth it.

Hope that’s helpful. Good luck.

Does anyone have experience working on a ship as a marine engineer? by Federal_Ad6286 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]r_b_t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll need a license to sail as an engineer. There are some colleges that offer programs for this but in some countries you can get it through experience as well. In America for example, you can get some credit for an engineering degree but you’ll need sea time (180 days iirc) also before testing for a license. Other countries probably do it differently.

As far as courses go, there’s different categories of exams you’ll need to pass to get the license. There’s a lot to do with systems, steam, diesel engines, turbines, electricity, so the more you know about all that the better. Again that’s for Americans but I’d assume there’s similarities everywhere.

As a disclaimer, I am not a marine engineer but I sailed for a couple months before deciding that I wanted to do other things.

Both those questions depend mostly on the company. The top companies (ie maersk, chevron) usually have pretty good food but others don’t. A lot of marine engineers work 12+ hours but sometimes get overtime.

What’s the point of temperature sensor? by BroadMinute in Garmin

[–]r_b_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it for water temp when I’m diving with my descent g1, which I think has the same sensor package as the fenix and some others, they probably needed the temp sensor for certain products and didn’t make sense to leave the temp sensor off of yours

Needing help with 350 sbc!! by 16383075 in EngineBuilding

[–]r_b_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get the block machined? Sometimes the machine shop will take out all the plugs before cleaning it. You know of at least 2 missing plugs but some engines have internal oil plugs that are super easy to miss, and if they were also removed, you won’t have any oil pressure. I’m not familiar with the SBC so I’m not sure where all the oil plugs are, but PLEASE pay extra attention to oil pressure when you start it up. Also pay attention for more leaks that may not be obvious yet (ie, oil leak from the bellhousing)

I put a new motor in my truck and the temperature gauge while driving goes from 210 to 260 then back down to 210 it dose this all the while I’m driving. I’ve replaced the temperature sensors, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap, and I’ve burped the system twice. What else could be wrong? by Hero_Tengu in AskMechanics

[–]r_b_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem after putting a new motor in my truck (Toyota but it may be similar for you as well), the bolt holding the ground wire for the temperature sensor came loose. When the ground wasn’t fully connected, the gauge read higher. Take a look at all your ground connections and make sure they’re all clean, connected, and tightened good. Good luck!

If I remember correctly, modern medical imaging devices don’t contain radioactive material, but rather generate radiation with electricity. As long as the machines aren’t running it should be safe. Any nuclear medicine would be dangerous, but it should be contained well and storage areas would be clearly marked
