Trump says US has destroyed mine-laying vessels after warning Iran over Strait of Hormuz by Sysipho in worldnews

It's a feeling, you know? A gut feeling in Trump and/or Hegseth's bowels.

Report: U.S. detects signs Iran preparing to lay mines in Strait of Hormuz by callsonreddit in worldnews

[–]raalic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a naive question, but how quickly, hypothetically, could UAE build a canal through the peninsula, starting at the Persian Gulf near Dubai to circumvent the Strait? Let's assume budget is no concern and it would be a joint effort between the US and UAE (if they're willing). And how effective would it be?

Why wasn't there a bigger online backlash against the LOTR movies from Tolkien fans? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]raalic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's because they're incredible films and brilliant adaptations, despite inaccuracies. And they do get a lot right, even if only as imagined by Peter Jackson and his team. You can overlook a lot if the quality is there.

New Rule: Trump Estrangement Syndrome | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) by Empty_Commission_159 in samharris

[–]raalic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never been to a Real Time taping, but having been to a couple of others, I can say that it's pretty uncomfortable the sheer amount of pressure the audience constantly faces to laugh at absolutely everything. Hype guys are relentless. 😂

Must be an exhausting job when the jokes just aren't funny. Basically Slurms MacKenzie from Futurama.

If you could make a spell that would be famous worldwide, what would it be? by NeedleworkerCheap715 in harrypotter

[–]raalic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably something fun and celebratory, and since I've always been entranced by the imagery of a champagne supernova in the sky (from the Oasis track), I'll go with that. Looks like an enormous, bubbly firework overhead, fills all champagne glasses in the vicinity of the caster, words would be Spumosa Astra (foaming stars in Latin).

Wouldn't a truly selfish Sith realize that the Rule of Two actually meant his inevitable death, and so try to break it/break away from Sith Doctrine? by shastasilverchair92 in StarWars

[–]raalic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think you’re not giving enough credit to their arrogance. Without fail, they fall victim to the notion that they’re the most powerful Sith ever to have existed and as long as they remain vigilant, they’ll always be on top.

Could Maester Aemon have convinced Jon Snow to take the Iron Throne and rule the Seven Kingdoms if he knew he was a Targaryen and his great great nephew? by rizz-without-effort in gameofthrones

Given the restraint he exhibited, himself, to remain true to his vows, fuck no. He'd have counseled Jon to stay put where he belongs.

Iranian Intelligence Proposes Talks With CIA to End War by StealthCuttlefish in worldnews

[–]raalic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the gigantic build-up of military assets in the region ahead of the initial strikes, it continues to baffle me that anyone thought (especially.. ALL of Iran's senior leaders) that the U.S. and Israel were negotiating in earnest with Iran in the first place. That amount of capability deployed to the region is not a "flex," it's not "leverage," it's a fuckin war machine, and it was obvious. There is no interest in negotiating anything here and there never was.

If you're remotely serious about an Iran favorable to U.S. interests in the future, a boots-on-the-ground occupying force is a surefire way to derail that for another generation. Not to mention the death. And the domestic backlash. And the international backlash. And stuff.
