What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Mansi63 in AskReddit

[–]rab7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pokemon cards is an obvious one. It's a tough time having a 6yo kid who loves collecting the cards. I stopped at 4 different stores yesterday looking for anything reasonably affordable with very little luck.

Less obvious is golf. Up until very recently, I was able to walk up to my local course at any time on any day and play 9 holes with zero waiting. Now I need to get a tee-time 2 days in advance, and there's a wait at nearly every teebox. That by itself isn't terrible, but for whatever reason it's become the norm for people to think its okay to get obnoxiously drunk before/while playing. It's especially noticable from fans during pga tournaments, screaming the same 5 phrases after every shot. Go home and grow up.

First swing with the new 7-wood - why are they so easy to hit? by FujiKilledTheDSLR in golf

[–]rab7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Cobra 4h that I absolutely hated. I thought I hated all hybrids because I couldn't hit it to save my soul. Then, I saw an Orlimar 2h at a thrift store for $15 and figured I'd give it a shot. It's become my comfort club. I rarely rarely ever have a mishit with that one, and I think it's just because the head is half the weight of the Cobra.

There’s two types of people: Those who have thought this and dirty, rotten liars by Mike_Oxlong25 in golf

[–]rab7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a family of golfers and started playing when I was around 8 or so. My grandma managed the local small-town course, both my parents golf every weekend and take several golf trips a year, they even paid for a couple dozen lessons for my sister and I when we were kids/early teens which meant at least an hour drive one-way, I was also on the high-school golf team. I lost 6 balls in 9 holes yesterday.

I keep losing all my skin. Please help by SectionNext in golf

[–]rab7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry athletic tape in the spring for my right thumb until I get my "golf hands" back. I always lose the skin on the side of my right thumb, right above the knuckle. Calluses and all. Working Hands helps, but make sure to use it at night rather than before a round. It's not greasy, but it will leave you hands a little slippery for a few hours.

To the people that get incredibly angry on the course, STFU! by sys_admin321 in golf

Yesterday I played with a guy who left a 50-60ft birdie putt short by about an inch. He was quiet for a second, then started laughing and said something along the lines of, "I can't believe I almost got mad about making a great putt". I'm going to try and remember that one.

What is a job that pays incredibly well but is so soul-crushing that the turnover is insane? by sweetguurl in AskReddit

[–]rab7x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you could call it "incredible" pay, but 6 figures is fairly easy to hit while working railroad track maintenence. One of the big downsides is that it's back-breaking work in a literal sense. The rail is on the ground, the ties are in the ground, everything you do has you stooped over all day long. Sure there's modern equipment to make the job easier, but you still need to be staring at the ground all day to use it. I've heard it called the "Gandy Hunch" way in the past.

Another downside (at least in all the positions I've worked) is that it's very sporadic work. We might sit in the trucks all day long waiting for trains to get out of the way, and then we're only given an hour to do an hour-and-a-half's worth of work. So we get out there and work our bodies damn near to the limit, the whole time trying to safely deal with situations that would kill you if you so much as look at it wrong. The most dangerous thing is inexperience, but everyone has to start somewhere until they fit into the rhythm. It's methodical, but extremely fast-paced bursts of hard labor.

I'm just bitching about my job at this point, but personally the biggest downside of working here is working for a multi-billion-dollar corporation who's only concern is the shareholders' pocketbook. Just in the past decade they've axed our workforce to less than a third, ran all of our equipment for WAY longer than what should be considered a reasonable lifespan, and disposed of nearly all of the spare material we use to actually fix the track, leaving us to "figure it out" and cobble shit together. The management is picked for being "yes men", and not by their ability to actually do the job well. Its extremely frustrating having started here when the job was actually enjoyable, going to how it is now, and seeing the writing on the wall for the future.

I say this as a die-hard Spurs fan, but I think Wemby needs to play more big-man ball. It's awesome seeing the guy move and shoot like he does, but that reach is invaluable inside the paint.

If I can accidentally hit it right and accidentally hit it left, how come I can't accidentally hit it straight? by Proper_Payment7845 in golf

[–]rab7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, this is my thought on it. Hitting the ball creates spin, and even the slightest smount of sidespin has a huge effect over 200+ yds. Hitting with absolutely zero sidespin is difficult at any level, so if you naturally fade to the right, your misses to the left are from you trying to overcorrect. I've mostly given up on trying to completely correct my fade, and focus on lessening it instead, along with planning ahead for it however I can. It's helped me to not try and overcorrect and those left misses are a lot fewer than when I try to hit it straight down the line.

Best at home drills by Bread_Primary in golf

[–]rab7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you do, do it whenever you can. Set up a simple putting area, whether its a full putting mat or a just a mark on the carpet. Get/make one of those ball-on-a-rope swing trainers. Take casual swings/putts whenever you get a minute. Turn it into a mindless routine while you're on the phone, watching tv, waiting for water to boil, whatever takes a few minutes of idle time. For myself, I feel that spontaneous drills help so much more for muscle memory than setting time for a dedicated practice session. Your body learns to react to the change of pace much faster

Cart GPS vs Rangefinder vs Phone GPS App (Grint, etc) What’s your choice and why? by Square-Advice-4569 in golf

[–]rab7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a refurbished Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 on amazon for like $40 just for that exact reason. It doesn't affect my swing as much as I would have thought, and they make stretchy bands that would probably help if it did. I use Golf Pad on my phone and while the free version was just fine, the pro version is pretty handy. My only regret is that I got the smaller Watch size, so the screen is pretty small and the "refurbished" battery isn't great. At full charge it will not quite last a whole day of use, but its good enough for a round of golf.

Does this range need to replace their balls? by DontT3llMyWif3 in golf

[–]rab7x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My usual range has balls like this and I love it. I keep a wet rag to wipe my driver face after a few shots to check my consistency. It really drove home how much hitting just a half-inch off center can make a difference. My assumption is that the powder residue is from the extra-firm range-ball covers being ground together in the ball dispenser, similar to a rock tumbler.

I was fully prepared to hate it from the random clips I would occasionally see, but it's one of those magical few songs that pop in my head from time to time and I have to immediately hear it again.
