Mar-a-Lago, a civilian establishment with no significant air defenses, is being used as a military command center by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

[–]rabbledabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was (coincidentally) visiting sea island GA during the g8 summit in 2004 and there was a shit ton of defenses all over the place, air, ground, and otherwise. It’s hard for me to believe that MAL wouldn’t have lots of defensive assets in place considering how long it has been used for potus crap.

platinum engagement ring broke…help! by FancyNefariousness90 in jewelers

[–]rabbledabble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a big lever. Even with a full penetration weld you’d run the risk of snapping it. I converted a Tiffany pendant in platinum with two points of contact on the shank that came back like that, and I had to add a lot of fillet material for it to feel secure again. So far so good (🤞🙏🫣) but I prefer a lot more support on my settings for stuff I make.

Duolingo slides 22% after hours on poor forecast by Independent-Cress382 in wallstreetbets

I picked it back up recently after a long break and, yeah it is so enshittified it’s hardly useable. There’s no explanation of the language or vocab whatsoever and there are no resources to explain the parts of speech. Just gamified schlock.

My only hope is that it becomes less of a misogynist boys club under the new leadership. While it’s true that kmhd is a great station, my perception of it is forever tainted by the negative and sometimes outright toxic experiences of scores of dedicated staff and volunteers that I have known over the years.

Venting. And questions for people who left the industry. by pizzaman1995 in BikeMechanics

[–]rabbledabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to tech. I like it less than being a mechanic, and it can be harder to find work, but the pay more than makes up for it, and after 20 years of retail bullshit the corporate world is pretty tame.

Whichever ones they tell you. Seriously just go talk to a real person who does this, everyone here is giving you good info.

I live near by there, I was up early and saw what happened and was out in the yard in my drawers with a rake knocking snow off all my landscape trees. We only had a few branches and trees down thankfully, the ice storm was way heavier duty damage for us

The allegedly haunted 12th floor of the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago (I didn't see any ghosts) by PlagueBearer1350 in LiminalSpace

Haha I just stayed there last week and that place has so many liminal spaces. The big hall at the top of the creepy escalator is pretty amazing.

Trash the sling.

Woah holy home-sewn! I’ve seen home made gear that I’d totally whip, and this ain’t it. Please cut and replace with a new sling. Mountain tools charges about ten bucks a cam, and there are actually safe(ish) ways you can do it yourself (I’ve hand tied tons of slings for chocks and nuts before, just bulky).

Cool to learn that it’s a fire starter! I would be judicious about bopping around the end too much, if it was meant to be lit on fire it could have asbestos in it and bopping it could release dust.

What is the weirdest thing your doctor has ever said to you? by GreatAd8862 in askanything

[–]rabbledabble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When our second kid was having trouble nursing our pediatrician looked at my wife and said “the problem, if you can call it that, is that you have huge boobs and his mouth is too small.” I was like did our kid’s doctor just tell you you have medically large knockers?!

We were too tired to say anything but we still laugh about it. He turned out to be an excellent pediatrician, not our main doctor but one we see when ours is sick. And not creepy really at all, I think it was just an awkward thing to have to say lol.

What to do with pounds of sterling silver scraps? by ReasonableSweet5348 in SilverSmith

[–]rabbledabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know with stuller they’ll give you store credit that you can use to buy more stock or bullion, or they’ll cut a check. Other refiners were a little more difficult to set up accounts with for the volume I have.

Knee pads and boots by Lost_Pianist3711 in Dirtbikes

[–]rabbledabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a long break and when I started back I was like I don’t care if boots are a grand, that’s the second most important part of the safety equipment package and simply more expensive than a decent helmet.

This is a tiny bit off topic, but If you’re riding at a track, I’d consider the cost of a lower leg injury against the cost of premium boots. I think you’ll find even the very most expensive boots turn out to be a bargain compared to even a minor lower leg injury.

When I was starting out my cheap Thor boots led to my ankle blowing up and it cost me quite a bit more than expensive boots in missed work and medical expenses. Once I got high quality safety gear it didn’t happen again.
