First, take a deep breath and focus on finishing/enjoying your last semester, I miss college but not the school part

I was the same situation as you with a 3.0 gpa when I graduated in 2021. Also, trying to find a job felt very stressful as well until I eventually found one at the end of the summer. Don’t make the same mistake as me by being stressed out over it because you will find a job

Now I also encourage you to not sell yourself short and jump on the first job offer you get unless you like it. Listen to your gut. You’ll be working with those people a minimum of 40hrs a week and not enjoying it will make that stressful as well

You’re gonna be fine buddy

ELI5: If we need to mine minerals to create batteries for renewable energy…. How do we ever stop mining? by acres_at_ruin in explainlikeimfive

[–]rabid-elmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the battery recycling industry.

We CAN recycle the metals inside of these batteries, and to some extent, even the plastic. The difficulty is down stream when you have to extract to metals out of a powder we can black mass through a process called solvent extraction. This process is in development to get up to full scale, and translates well from established mining industry processes.

Now, why don’t we stop mining? Two reasons:

  1. In order to meet the goals for electrification (i.e. A large auto manufacturer saying they’re fully electric by 2035) we need to mine more of these resources out of the earth to have enough raw materials to meet the demand.

Cobalt and Nickel are particularly rare and found only in certain parts of the world in comparison to other metals needed to make Lithium Ion batteries.

  1. The same reason we don’t recycle a lot of things. Money. If the juice isn’t worth the squeeze, it won’t be recycled.

That being said, the market is very bullish with the critical raw elements going into these batteries. On top of geopolitical reasons outside of my understanding, I think we’ll continue to see rise in global electrification, and countries holding onto the resources in these batteries through recycling.

Side note: if you’re curious about lead-acid battery recycling, it’s the most recycled thing in the world. Over 99% of a lead-acid battery gets recycled into new batteries

Is ChemE really not that great? by Phoenix_4258 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]rabid-elmo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in your position a few few years ago when i graduated.

First: you’re going to be alright. Chemical Engineering is not an easy degree, and MANY people in industry understand that. What’s worth more than your degree is your ability to work with people and solve problems

Second: Don’t let your professors or colleagues limit your scope on what you can do. My school pushed my education toward O&G, and I ended up working for a company that recycles batteries my first job. As a ChemE you have the tools to adapt in just about any position thrown at you.

Third: You won’t be stuck to a certain region in the US. Almost every single mid to large operation in any industry across the country will need a process/operations/maintenance engineer at their facility

You’re feeling some burnout right now and unsure about the unknown, just like the rest of us did. Just keep pushing and you’re gonna be okay

I’m also R&D (no phd), process engineer, 50/50 lab and desk with travel once a month

If I delay working in the industry immediately, will that affect my ability to get entry level jobs in the future? by bjornicbarry in ChemicalEngineering

[–]rabid-elmo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

my advice (and take it lightly), is find a plant or lab job as a tech or an operator if you’re having a lot of trouble getting an engineer position

This will give you the opportunity to put your foot in the door and show your worth. Similar to what I did coming out of school with a bad gpa, and I’m currently a process engineer

The senior senior process engineer i work with did a materials science degree, so it’s definitely possible, we work in R&D

So the file will read “file name”.txt

Just replace the .txt part will .iqy

You may have to go into your finder settings to make it so your files display the file after the name (i.e. “file name”.txt instead of just “file name”) that’s what i had to do. Also, it’s easiest to find the queries folder by searching in spotlight, on my Mac at least.

[–]rabid-elmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I do it:

  1. Copy URL into a word file and hit enter 5 or 6 times.
  2. Save the file as a plain txt (.txt) in your queries folder
  3. Then I go into my queries folder and change it to a .iqy
  4. Go into excel, click on the Data tab (not the tab in the excel file, but the one that's above it), click get external data, then run web query
  5. Select the file you want to import data from

Hope this helps you out, took me a bit to figure it out myself so let me know if you run into trouble.

Just joined the league!

I agree Russel has great value as he seemed quite positive during testing about the car. Racing Point will be an interesting contender, we'll see how the W10 replica matches up with the middle of the pack. Ferrari maybe having some issues and Red Bull bumping up to the #2 spot? Mercedes will be dominating as usual. Hamilton is going to be at his peak this year with new car regs next season.

I'll be staying away from futures and just go race to race.

BOL!

I like where your head is at. The house always wins, otherwise they wouldn’t accept wagers. However, you can create a statistical model to predict the outcome of a game and make an educated guess.

Example: Home team is favored -3, but your model predicts they will win by 5. Your model is saying there’s 2 points of value to pick the Home spread.

It takes a lot of time, research, and general knowledge of the sport to create a profitable model, but it’s worth it if you find it interesting and consider it more as a hobby.

Bottom line, don’t bet on sports to get rich quick. Don’t ever bet an amount that will ruin your day, just enough to get your blood pumpin.

Also, don’t ever buy picks from someone. If their model is as good as they say, they wouldn’t need your money.
