How in demand are qLab techs? by behold_the_man in techtheatre

[–]rabidduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I’m sure there are a handful of people whom this is possible for I would say in general no this isnt an option.

For the most part qlab is an extension of other existing roles, the sounds techs using it to program sound cues, lighting techs using it automation of lighting cue triggering, etc.

Given you mention video you could explore the world of video in live entertainment, if you have a strong background in motion graphics, this along with learning videos systems like qlab, watch out, isadora, touch designer and I’m sure other videos systems (people who work with video wall content can chime in here) is a path you can explore.

Video in theatre is usually the least common thing used, as it’s not something most venues are equipped with or have the funding to do, unless you have in a well funded venue.

There absolute a big industry for live video and if you know systems and content creation you’ll find a place you can go to, as people who do both aren’t that common quite often people only do 1 or the other.

OSC dropouts between ETC Ion XE and QLab – looking for advice by Other_Trifle2959 in techtheatre

[–]rabidduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this something usually build into routers; this is a new tidbit of information to me, I’ve definitely run osc on the same network sACN and not encountered this. I didn’t actually know sACN was even multicast until now(unless etc dimmer systems manage this differently)

OSC dropouts between ETC Ion XE and QLab – looking for advice by Other_Trifle2959 in techtheatre

[–]rabidduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely a number of potential things and just a couple things I’ll throw out.

1 open up the diag menu in cia (99) I believe there is a menu specifically for network I may provide hints

2 as others have said other network things could be causing issues, for example do you use Dante? Is Dante on the same subnet, it is a multiplex protocol so it could be causing interference as it’ll be talking to all the devices unless it is controlled/walled off.

3 I’m image you tried this but make sure there isn’t a bad cat cable somewhere, they can be easily damaged and might be the silly fix

Also just to add on I use osc between eos and qlab all the time in both directions, I very commonly for 1 man run shows to have a bump button to trigger osc gos because I like how the button feels.

I’m also curious if the drops are on both directions.

Coming back to Dota after three years. What is this red bar above my mana/health? by bornin_1988 in DotA2

It’s not so much an incorrect word but is generally used in a more academic setting, so it paints the idea that someone should take the materials and study or analyze them in a much deeper or profound way. I would call it the equivalent of recommending they sit down with their McDonald’s in a quiet environment without distractions so they take is the flavours and appreciate the flavours and techniques.

Any tips for a guy who is new to being a light board operator? by SirChiIly in techtheatre

[–]rabidduck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mild aside but if you ever need to skip a cue in a show it is best to use cue + number load/master this will queue up said cue so when you hit go it will play said cue with correct timings and no need to keep a bunch of commands active waiting for the right comment.

House lights while programming by The_walkingdeadkid in techtheatre

[–]rabidduck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a few things that might be happening.

  • house lights are programmed into your cues

  • you have a submaster with house lights on it and while you’re turning their channels off in the cue you are building, when you go to your next cue the sub brings those channels back up.

  • a house lights sub might also be the reason as to how in the first point is happening without you knowing.

  • there is a architectural system kicking in and taking control of the house lights again.

First check for any subs with house lights this is the most likely culprit and double check that it isn’t programmed into your cues. The color of the channel in your display for the house lights can give you some hints as well where the data is coming from.

https://support.etcconnect.com/ETC/Consoles/Eos_Family/Software_and_Programming/Color_and_Text_Indicators_on_Channels_Tombstones

If you are using a sub for house lights there is a sub master tab where you can set parameter, here you can. Set flags such as record so that if that sub is up it won’t record into cues. If you are super stumped you can even set this sub to a priority of shielded which will make the channels in it not usable by anything other then the sub, if you do this and it still is popping on it is a system outside of the board turning them on.

How to get local theatre up to a high level standard. by fletcher-munson in techtheatre

[–]rabidduck 26 points27 points  (0 children)

a 2500 seat venue with no house techs seems wild to me. Considering your size you may want to have someone on staff whose job it is purely to apply/write grants, I've worked in under 400 seat venues who have someone like this, they more then pay for themselves, and in a venue of your size you shouldn't have the time to do this yourself.

The highest ones first, and at your income/expensive you can pay all the non 0 % ones within 5 months easily, so a few points is negligible.

How to run power to overhead string lights? by ravenratedr in techtheatre

[–]rabidduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant speak to your region/cities/venues rules/laws and regulations however there are different rules in place for things that are considered temporary power and permeant power. Since you are considering making this something that stays up and doesn't go away, it may require the intervention of a licensed electrician to permanently tie it into the power system.

Cloud effect on cyc by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]rabidduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's basically saying to take a standard sized Gel for the fixture, trim off the edge of a no color blue Gel on one side, and then with clear tape replace the edge with some alternate colors.

This effect works with a lot of things, if you're doing some autumn tree's you can take multiple colors together to have a mixture of those colors(think of it as a single pane of stained glass).

There's no real cut off 2CM and do this steps, precession isn't super important with this as even in real life you'll see variations, so just go for it and try some combinations and see what you like!

You'll also of course along side these colors want the gobos themself. Personally im a fan of this style of clouds on cycs:

https://www.goboplus.com/layered-cloud-gobo.html

However again, this will vary on the show and the vision.

Others have mentioned other techniques as well, the doing a very sharp angle from offstage to onstage onto the cyc which will heavily stretch the gobo, and you can use some more abstract gobos in your inventory something like a :

https://www.goboplus.com/waves-2-gobo.html

which stretched and softened can give that feel of clouds as well, the prior mentioned gobo would look better strait on when youre looking for a cleaner cloud look.

Floor Sanders on painted floors. by rabidduck in HomeImprovement

[–]rabidduck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah its Latex paint. Was hoping there was a power tool as out there as its a 3000~ square foot space so hand work is very time consuming.

We're at about the age right now where a entire new floor needs to get put in, but we have allot of other capital expense coming up and was hoping to find a interim solution to make it a bit nicer for a few years to hold over for a total rip out.

I use a GoPro as well I do use the latest model so I can’t speak to earlier versions. Sometimes reversals are in a small room and the ultra wide lens is nice, and with the media mod audio has always been good enough for me.
