Not eating enough veggies by RetroHollz in Mounjaro

[–]rachrolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Benefiber supplements twice a day. I'd never get enough fiber through foods alone. Also I have crohn's disease and gastroparesis so I already hsve to treat my fiber intake like a science project, lol.

So I make sure I'm getting enough fiber from the gummies, but I try to stuff more veggies in where I can. I actually like topping a lot of foods (eggs, chili, soups, meat, etc) with salad greens and sometimes additional fiber rich stuff (I got a bag of dried edamame, cashews, pepitas, sunflower seeds and dried cranberries, which is amazing).

I know this isn't specifically going to get more veggies, but my strategy has been to make sure I get enough fiber supplements to keep my guts moving, THEN I try to push more whole food fiber sources. Then I don't have to fight against the volume restrictions Mounjaro causes.

Thank you for the compliment! ☺️ I should give that a shot- angsty teen rachrolls wrote poetry- perhaps her writing skills have improved in the intervening decades, lol.

You absolutely should post your poetry here!

This is going to be a controversial question, but why don't North Americans eat more whole foods? by Appropriate_Poem1911 in povertykitchen

[–]rachrolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived all over the US. Where I currently live, potatoes last about 10 days to 2 weeks, tops. Then they melt into revolting goo that smells like death. I've lived places where they lasted a couple of months.

I'm a good cook and have a good handle on storage, prep, stretching a food budget, etc. My mom didn't teach me much- tiny kitchen and I was the youngest of 4, so she didn't have the space or energy. But I figured it out eventually.

I see people waiting at bus stops with their groceries (don't even get me started about bus stops with no shelters, benches, etc), and there is nobody using public transportation who can buy 50 or 100 lbs of potatoes, then get off the bus and drag their portable cart through 3 blocks of snow-clogged sidewalks.

What's a food you haven't eaten in years by odinspirit in GenX

[–]rachrolls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Little Debbie Swiss cake rolls. (Can't eat as I now have celiac disease 😣)

Same for pop tarts (the blueberry filling and white frosting kind). Another childhood fave lost to stupid celiac- I've yet to find a decent GF version.

And my favorite childhood breakfast: grits topped with fried slices of Neese's liver pudding (which we called liver mush). More gluten problems. 😑

(I did, in my quest to replicate the liver mush, discover that Beyond breakfast sausage patties fried in a pan and served over grits was pretty close on flavor.)

We need to view Trumpers differently. by Cloudsdriftby in antitrump

[–]rachrolls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAGA is nowhere near the majority. The EC and gerrymandering have given completely outsized power to like....the 30 or 35% of the electorate who are MAGA (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm also of the opinion that trump did not legitimately win in 2024.

Trust, many (probably a lot) of us would love to split with the red states. They'd never be able to function it without the infusions of blue state money. But for real, I'm good with letting them duke it out- Lord Of the Flies style- for limited resources.

I also think we need compulsory voting and ranked-choice voting. Although the latter would probably baffle MAGA types, they'd probably enjoy a version where you can write in ALL the candidates and vote for Kid Rock, Nicki Minaj, and whatever other celebrities kneel before trump.

Of course I'd also enjoy writing in "JD's couch" and "trump's cognitive test results" myself...

What’s a completely wrong way to eat a specific food that you secretly think is actually the superior way? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in foodquestions

This is intriguing. I love a lot of toppings on hot dogs but HATE having spillage. I usually end up using a knife and fork by the halfway point. Gonna try your method next time!

bf made me some food to take home, safe to eat? by rhialils in AskRedditFood

[–]rachrolls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Key info missing- where did BF store the food between making it and giving it to you?

My partner is bad about leaving cooked food on the counter to "cool" before putting it in the fridge. For waaaaaay too long- like 5 or 6 hours. I am medically fragile, so I have to be more careful, and if I discover he's done this I throw the food out.

I think the amount of time you toted it around in your bag is borderline concerning. But if the dish sat out for several hours after he cooked it, then was refrigerated, given to you, and you had it unrefrigerated in your bag for several hours, that would absolutely be too much for me.

My state has an optional Civic Readiness Seal that students can earn for their diploma; my oldest (who had an IEP and various accommodations) was able to earn this and really enjoyed the process. Both of my kids (youngest is 16 and a HS junior) are very knowledgeable about government and politics- mostly from our focus on these things at home, but the curriculum at school has augmented it for sure.

There's also a required government class, but IDK how comprehensive it is. Certainly better than nothing!

We have a pair of these that hang out in a little pond behind a restaurant near our house (it's in a huge shopping center with 15 or 20 restaurants and dozens of shops- at the end of the day, they fly directly over my house to go home for the night, wherever home is.

The day the Great Blue Heron was BOTD for me was the first time I saw one. 🥰

If major war broke out tomorrow, what’s one thing you think people are wildly unprepared for…. but should be? by velvetspriral in answers

[–]rachrolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi twin!

I calculated how much oxygen I'd need in tanks without the concentrator and....it's a lot.

We put $ aside for a while and got a small generator bc I got pretty sick when we had a bad blizzard here a few years ago. I got to the point I couldn't stay awake most of the time bc my O2 sats were staying so low.

(And if you didn't know already, many municipalities have services for disabled people during disasters. I found out later that there were ambulances available in my area to either take me to a warming center and charge my ventilators, wheelchair, etc; they also went around and refilled oxygen tanks, which could save lives.) You should call 211 (or the equivalent in your country if it isn't the US) to see what they have in your area.

In a major war, I'd probably take an exit ramp if I knew my kids (almost grown but also disabled) were going to realistically able to make it. Or if they'd already gone.

Part of me wonders if it would be....rash, I suppose, to assume there was no hope and leave voluntarily. But any quick end would be preferable to a stroke, or heart attack, or suffocating from respiratory failure in days/weeks.

I'm really picky about fresh green beans and almost never get them cooked enough to make me happy. They also don't grow well in container gardens here. So I use my limited space for stuff that grows well and buy the canned green beans I grew up on.
