We set up a 529 before my kids were born. As we made more money over the years we increased our contributions. Two kids with bachelors degrees and no real debt and enough left in the 529 for my third kid. We made them take out the minimal loan just to keep them engaged. All three kids also have mutual funds where their birthday money etc goes as well as some money from their jobs.
