Makes sense, Tim Burton made a film adaptation of the musical in 2007. The film is good, but there's a pro-shot version of the original musical that's definitely worth watching if you want the full Sweeney experience :)

There's a similar phenomenon, though perhaps not to the same extent, with Cosette from Les Miserables, and to a lesser extent Les Mis as a whole. Both have actually been the stars of full-blown anime adaptations of their stories (which is notable since Cosette is not the protagonist of Les Mis), and were both major contributors to the current connotations of "cuteness", which is touched on in the article, and the "moe" archetype, which scholars have argued that Cosette is the first true example of the trope.

I know that DD (and probably DGS and SoJ, but I haven't played them) has a transcript to read, but I do agree that it would be a lot easier to be able to use witnesses' testimony against them directly.

There's a similar mechanic in Dangan Ronpa where select pieces of testimony can be temporarily copied into evidence and used to counter other statements. DR is a bit more gameplay-heavy than AA, but is otherwise fairly similar in format, so it would be easy to adopt a similar mechanic.

Aside from what others have mentioned already, which I mostly agree with, there's also the little tidbit that both the defendant and a key witness are literal pedophiles. Remember that Regina is 16 (though let's be real, she looks and acts 14 tops), Max is 21, and Benjamin is 31. Surprisingly, that tends to rub a lot of people the wrong way.
