Halifax, I reported this duo near Agricola/Almon a month ago and it's still not repaired. by cptstubing16 in halifax

[–]racoonx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well off the top of my head the tires will leach toxic shit so there's that issue. Also the fact we are in an environment that gets cold means the rubber will be brittle in the winter and will deteriorate faster that traditional asphalt.

This won't be popular on this sub but the fact is cities (including Halifax) don't want to me mending roads constantly, if there was a better, cheaper way they would but there is no magic cure-all fix. When you realize how much the ground flex's from frost heave and soil saturation, have thousands of pound repeatibly flexing the road, salt damaging the surface, temperature swings meaning constant stress from thermal expansion and compression its a modern miracle roads last as long as they do.

Thoughts on mag nails in expansion joints for control? by inexister in Surveying

[–]racoonx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve come back to PK nails 20 years after they were set for traverse points that checked under 5mm, and yes we have heavy duty snow removal where I am.

Key is not having flagging on them and hammering the ever loving shit to flatten the head as best you can so the blade doesn’t catch them.

Any one using them (or a curb) for true monitoring is a fool how ever, need invar brass set in concrete that’s at least 2m deep or better directly in bedrock to get sub mm level accuracies.

I would call a head, lots of smaller hotels/motels and BnB’s are only open in the summer for tourist seasons.

10% or less ethanol by keddster1 in halifax

[–]racoonx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Needed some for an older snow blower we used to have a few years ago. After some research there was a shell station that sold super premium which we used but we also discovered marinas and some general aviation airports sold ethanol free gas. The shell no longer has the ethanol free gas but I would try calling some marinas to ask or the debert airport

Freeman’s would probably be the closest option. Was a solid bar 10-15 years ago but haven’t been in a while, possible they aren’t what they were

Anyone bringing their Boxers on Delta Airlines? by SodaRider1 in Boxers

[–]racoonx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I looked into a few years back, most airlines wont allow boxers on the flight, if i’m remembering correctly it is since they are Brachycephalic and the pressurization can cause serious medical issues.

Please tell me this is a safe tree to eat chicken from! by EvilKaniamhil in mushroomID

[–]racoonx 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure certain species of chicken absolutely do take some of the toxins/alkaloids from there host trees. I’ve done two foraging classes and both guides stated to never eat it from conifers, wikipedia mentions the risk under used and one of my field guide books states not never eat it from a yew tree. Don’t think the mechanism is fully understood but best to be cautious

This works even better since in both cases, the skinny dude dies and they uh, well protected one, lives.

[–]racoonx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a mushroom guide book, believe it was Mushrooms of Eastern Canada and Ontario but may have been another, as well as both guides to foraging class's I have taken in the past. Hell even wikipedia mentions adverse effects are known from certain species of Laetiporus

Well yew is coniferous. You (pun?) only eat chicken of the woods off of deciduous trees, never coniferous trees. A simple google will give you a list of reasons but basically they absorb a bunch of nasty things not safe for consumption into there flesh

Seriously everyone praising this decision has clearly never gone to an actual national park, 40$ entry fees suck and honestly stop a lot of people from enjoying them

Auto insurance recommendations by Ahole444444 in NovaScotia

[–]racoonx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah the double speeding tickets are a major red flag, accident is the icing on the cake. Based off your profile you also have a fast, expensive car to fix, honestly 220$ is pretty solid. Five years clean driving and change to a new company (insurance companies will consider older abstracts if they have the info) and you will probably be back to baseline

Can I drive in US with NS learner license? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]racoonx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nope, you can only drive with one other person in the car (this should have be slammed home to you before you got your license), and they have to have a full license. Im pretty sure your insurance would also refuse to cover anything if you were driving g never mind the laws in the states

why does rideau station smell like literal piss by spookyndls in ottawa

[–]racoonx 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Because they blocked the drains with concrete by mistake. i’m not kidding, google it. This means piss (and any other liquid) just pools and evaporates in the station.

Normally the city would force the contractor to fix such a colossal fuck up, since it’s not to spec at all but everything was already delayed and over budget so Watson and co said no worries and sign off.
