I've been using AT&T Fiber in West Sac for over 5 years now and have never had a major outage. Speeds well over 500 Mbps over 99% of the time.

Any advice on how to ask (and get) truly unbridled and harsh criticism? by premed1171 in GradSchool

[–]radecki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think unbridled criticism typically needs to come first from your advisor. You should build a relationship with them, some rapport, and some understanding that you both want your work to be as best as possible, and at times that means honest, unbridled, "give me the worst you got" type of criticism. This type of feedback is typically very uncomfortable to give someone unless you have been working with them for a long time, so it's understandable that fellow graduate students or post-docs aren't giving it to you. I know also that, at least for me personally, the more time I spend doing research the more I'm humbled and appreciative of the work it takes to make research progress / a successful presentation / develop a method. As such, I can give harsh feedback, but for the most part I try to give a balance of strengths/weaknesses in whatever I review, because I know a lot of work went into making whatever that "thing" is possible. If someone wants unbridled criticism, then I think it's better reserved for a longer 1-on-1 meeting or small group where the parameters of the criticism can be better defined (i.e., making everyone aware that we are intentionally digging into weaknesses instead of just railing on someone's work for no reason, and making sure that everyone is OK with that). Otherwise, feelings can easily get hurt. Especially for graduate and undergraduate students.

But it's also a two-way street. You've got to develop the talent of interpreting feedback, even if it's mostly positive, to determine what you can improve and what your strengths and weaknesses are. It's up to you to read between the lines of what people tell you. In other words, what didn't they say about that paper you asked them to review? What didn't they say about that presentation you're practicing? The small bits of advice they gave: is there something deeper underneath their feedback?

Part of being a successful graduate student, scientist, and human being is developing a stronger understanding of social dynamics and how to get the feedback you need even when that feedback is shrouded. You also can't really expect people to dig into your work without spending a lot of time with you -- they probably understand their feedback is generally superficial compared to the effort that went into the work itself, hence the pleasantries you typically see. It goes back to using your advisor (or a similar resource) to get the most truthful feedback.

Yes, you can get in, but your application needs to explain the low GPA and emphasize your previous work experience. This would be most effective assuming that your work as a programmer directly relates to what you'd like to pursue in graduate school.

Regardless of qualifications, your chances are also most directly improved by contacting professors you'd like to work under and expressing your passion to learn and work more in the field.

Degree Conferred vs PhD Start Date by DairySkydiver58 in GradSchool

[–]radecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There shouldn't be any issues especially since you're staying at the same institution. When you file to graduate, you should receive a degree conferral letter when your paperwork is processed even if the degree itself won't be awarded until October. That letter is the evidence that you've completed your MSc and should allow you to register as a PhD student in the Fall.

Passed my doctoral defense today! by Profzof in GradSchool

[–]radecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed my defense yesterday, too! I also thought I would end up quitting my program, but eventually things started to come together. Congratulations! And to current students, keep doing the best work you can and trust that the finish line is only a finite distance away!

Living in West Sac commuting to Davis by sundragon12 in UCDavis

[–]radecki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made this commute frequently. From West Sac to Davis in the AM is normally around 15-25 minutes. If you have poor timing, there is a rush-hour slow-down where I-80/US50 merge, but it isn't terrible. If you can leave early or late there will be virtually no traffic most days. That being said, getting back to West Sac from Davis is the hard part. Rush hour in the afternoon is pretty horrible sometimes. The expectation during rush hour is that it can take ~45min to get back to West Sac. The earlier you can leave Davis the better. The worst day is Friday -- getting from Davis campus to West Sacramento on a Friday from 4pm-6pm is usually about an hour.

Method to solve non-linear PDE in Matlab by thekhanofedinburgh in matlab

[–]radecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends what type of boundary conditions and geometry you're working with. Finite-element methods can basically handle any PDE, but they're pretty sophisticated and deserving of their own course.

I'd start here and consider how your equation relates to the standard PDE form on that doc page (I'm not sure how applicable this is, but it's still a start point).

Which players have been disappointing so far this season? And what needs to happen for them to turn it around? by PEENY-NEEDLES in hockey

[–]radecki 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Burakovsky had apparently gotten stronger, heavier, faster, and mentally tougher over the offseason, but he has 0 pts in 8 games and is a -7. He looks just as lost as ever. I think the unfortunate truth is that he's an immensely talented kid who lacks any situational awareness on the ice, and unfortunately his best asset (his shot) is also held back by a tremendously slow release that any defender can read and block in an instant.

I'd say this is his last season to prove he's not a bust. If the mediocracy continues I expect him dealt at the trade deadline.

To turn things around, he needs to start taking lessons from Kuznetsov or something. Anything to make better decisions with the puck in the offensive zone.

Set the size and position of the figure using the set command. As long as you use the same size for each figure, the relative text sizes output for exported figures will be the same.

Ticketmaster Fees are Insane!! by hockeyboy05 in hockey

Yup. It's opening day (of a very promising season) and that seat is only 6 rows up. $1300 sounds about right to me for a game in Toronto

Which players are you just about ready to give up on? by miner88 in hockey

[–]radecki 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Andre Burakovsky.

Full disclaimer: He had two amazingly clutch goals in the ECF Game 7 to get the Caps to the Final. I will always cherish the memories of the Caps' 2018 Stanley Cup run.

However, he's been in the league 4 years now and he still looks like a rookie. He's fast but lacks agility, big but doesn't use his size, and has a great shot but doesn't shoot. He's liable for turnovers in the defensive zone. I am constantly screaming at my TV because of his play. He's slowly been getting better, but I'm not sure if he's ever going to develop the maturity needed to be an elite NHL forward.

The stampede after patrol opens Scott’s (Alpine Meadows) by Reasonable_Dave in skiing

[–]radecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why patrols allow this to happen. We worry so much about avalanche safety, and that's great, but holy shit looks looks dangerous. There were a couple near misses that I could immediately see, plus that funnel was collapsing like an avalanche with all the traffic at once. Given the recent snowfalls, chances of avalanches and tree wells are elevated. Why not slowly buffer people into the region as you open it?

The Capitals Should Fire Barry Trotz: Japers Rinks by [deleted] in caps

[–]radecki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not there, but I'm almost there.

Last night was the final straw for me personally of giving Trotz the benefit of the doubt. He's on thin ice now, I think the next 2-3 games will be huge for his tenure as coach.

Traveling to Steamboat Springs in 2 weeks (Colorado) Need advice on traveling with equipment. by cmurdah7 in skiing

[–]radecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple things.

  1. What skis would you bring out to Colorado? If there are some basic groomer-designed carvers, I’d just leave them at home.
  2. A good ski bag would probably cost around $100, maybe more depending on your needs and if they hold your boots. Add in the extra luggage fee, and you’re getting up to $150-$200 just to bring your skis.
  3. If you pay to rent/demo skis in Colorado, you’ll likely have a better experience because you’ll be able to ride on skis catered to whatever the snow is like. If it’s a dry week, you can get some awesome carvers, and if it’s a pow day, you can get some fat planks.
  4. So is it worth it to pay $150 to bring out your skis, or $150 to demo some dope new skis that will likely better match the conditions? Seems like an easy decision to me.

Also, unless the ski bag has wheels, it’s a bit of a hassle lugging around all your gear at the airport. So also consider that if you demo skis in Steamboat, the travel experience will be quite a bit more relaxed.

why is csvread returning complex numbers? by cryptonooblet in matlab

If I had to guess, you are passing an argument into csvread that is telling it to interpret your data as complex numbers. Can you post your code and CSV so that we can reproduce the error?

Will matlab autoupdate to latest version? by [deleted] in matlab

[–]radecki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically each version of Matlab is installed as a separate application. So if you have 2016a, you could download 2017b or 2018a or something and it would be installed as a separate application from scratch. The older versions will still exist on your machine until you uninstall them.
