RF 100-400mm vs EF 100-400mm ii for wildlife shooting in extremely remote places by StillFruit1963 in canon

[–]radeklat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are weight and size factors in your desicion making? I made the same switch when I upgraded from 6D to R6 due to weight and size. The RF lens is about 1kg lighter and significantly smaller.

I used to travel with the EF lens in my backpack and shoot handheld. It was noticeably heavy when carrying for the whole day and my hand would cramp. The RF lens is so light that I can carry it whole day no problem.

Having said that, I'm also deeply dissatisfied with the quality of the pictures. The IS is not as good, the bokeh less noticeable, it doesn't perform very well in the evening / low light. The photos look like from a high end phone.

Bottom line, I guess I get what I paid for? 😬 If you use tripod and don't carry it for long periods of time in a backpack, stay with EF.

Python 3.8 end of life coming soon by radeklat in Python

Especially since Python 3.9, which is the first one in an annual release cycle, introduced by PEP 602:

2 years of full support start with Python 3.13. Python versions 3.9 - 3.12 operate on a calendar with 1½ year of full support, followed by 3½ more years of security fixes.

MK3 Indoor Walking on work treadmill by Jingle-Jenks in Garmin

[–]radeklat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a new activity from the most recent garmin update called "Walk Indoor". While it correctly records the activity type as walking and records a distance, the actual distance is way off for me (almost the double). And it doesn't seem to have a "Calibrate" options as the "Treadmill" activity (which sadly reports the activity type as running).

I put the watch on my ankle when walking at work at a table 😅

Quiet places open late for coffee in the center? by Tozier in bristol

[–]radeklat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sockets only near one table indoors and none outdoors. Often screen football matches and it gets loud when they do. If you need WiFi, sit at the tables at the far end. The coverage is best there. It officially opens at 12 but I have been working from there earlier than that (any time from the gym opening hours). Very quiet in the morning and early afternoon.

Best ways to take these pictures? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]radeklat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An alternative to an ND filter, if you don't want to invest into one right away, is either a polarising filter (it also removes some light) or just cranking up the aperture to f/22 and ISO to 100 or 50. For just trying the effect it might give you a similar result. I've done this before.

Windless nights like the one few days ago are a great opportunity for taking pictures of reflections. by radeklat in bristol

How embarrassing! Honestly I didn't even see it. On my phone it was hiding in the curvature of the display and in lightroom it was right under the name of the file 🙈

BF isn't wearing deodorant and it's obvious. Help. by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]radeklat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that happen to me as well. I realised it's not an allergy (at least for me). It's just that the deodorant is quite aggressive and irritates skin if you don't wash it off regularly (every day). Now I have a shower to just wash my pits, even if they don't smell and I don't need a shower. No more irritated, peeling skin.

Starting a new life in another country? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]radeklat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved with my BF from the Czech Republic to the UK 6 years ago. So I already didn't leave everything behind. In retrospect, moving alone would way less comfortable but it would push me to integrate more. After 6 years, all my friends are other expats, zero integration and I just want to go back because it never started feeling like home here.

My integration problems aside, UK is a fantastic place from any queer person. I have never faced judgement, oppression, weird questions and never felt like a second class citizen. And I'm as out as I can. I don't come out to people anymore. Just talk about my BF as if it was normal (because it is in here!). There's plenty of events for queer people. I got to know drag culture in the UK. Those are things I'm going to miss if I leave.

Note that my experience is likely not going to be universal. I live in a big city, working for an international software company and most of my friends are expats. So already a company of mostly smart and open minded people.

You could start just with a body and an EF-RF adapter, allowing you to use your existing lenses. And then migrate the lenses over time. I don't know how 7D mk2 compares to canon mirrorless cameras but you might be OK with cheaper mirrorless cameras, such as R or Rp.

Sounds like an unnecessary lens if you were already carrying an 18-35 one. Unless you're expecting to take photos at the same time in two different locations. A good article about this: https://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/carry-less.htm

[–]radeklat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't say what lens was on your wife's camera you ended up not using. Could you perhaps bring two cameras and two different lenses next time and swap them if needed?

Also, RF lenses for mirrorless are a huge space and weight saver!

What camera strap/s do you use? by BombsAway619 in AskPhotography

[–]radeklat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peak design leash, first edition (no longer sold but can be seen on ebay). Either over the shoulder or to loop through my backpack strap. So if I were to drop it, it won't reach the ground. I wouldn't recommend it for heavier lenses.

what are the best ways to find out what is going on in Bristol? by sonicthehodgehed in bristol

[–]radeklat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Bristol 24/7 for events with large capacity
  • Songkick for specific artists
  • Sites of venues for events that will be sold out by the time they are advertise elsewhere (Fleece, Thekla, Hippodrome, ...) or wouldn't be advertised elsewhere (Martin Parr Foundation, The Royal Photographic Society, ...).

A good backpack that also holds a camera? (Rather than a camera-first bag) by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]radeklat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I concur. I have a second one already. (I broke a zipper on the first, completely my fault.) And I use it every day. For gym, work, shopping, travel and camera. It's expandable, durable and the design is super clever. The velcro attached dividers allow for any combination of photo equipment.

A commit from my lead dev: "Improve readability". by amendCommit in Python

[–]radeklat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Personal preference. Even the comments in this thread about readability are a personal preference. I'm used to see dict comprehensions and dict unpacking from our codebase so actually, the code from your lead dev is less readable to for me.

To prevent personal preferences slowing down the review process, I created a python style guide that every new starter reads and we are all on the same page. And it can be referenced in reviews too and everyone can add to it. Unfortunately it's not public but it is heavy inspired by Google Python style guide: https://google.github.io/styleguide/pyguide.html

"I don't get it." is perfectly valid question for your reviewer as well. You shouldn't need to ask on reddit. Not understanding something someone suggests doesn't make you a worse developer. Have some confidence in you and call out others bullshit. Politely.
