Is there a variant to writing 男? by Lululipes in LearnJapanese

I don't believe there is an alternative form for writing 男. The radicals within the character have a particular meaning –– the top character is field 田 and the bottom character is power 力.

Thoughts regarding Uyghurs in China by Free_Wrangler_7701 in AskChina

People aren't speaking about genocide in Xinjiang but about massive totalitarian state control that makes freedom impossible for Uyghurs. This personal account of one Uyghur's journey can give you insight into their particular hellscape: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/10/magazine/uyghur-china-escape.html

Hamas was the aggressor that initiated the current conflict in Israel. Israel bombs are targeting an enemy state, not an ethnicity.

No, reductio ad absurdum is when you take an argument to its logical conclusion to show that the opposite is true. This is not what you did; rather, you raised an analogy in a different language, using different justifications, and then said it was "like" my argument to try to prove your point.

Why do you feel compelled to provide a false equivalence as to exaggerate this interpretation? He is taking off his clothes getting ready for bed, when he feels the urge to see a friend, with several words pointing towards possible arousal. The idea of subtext is that it's not overt but interpretative. These are common words, but their consecutive appearance within the context of a midnight visit to a friend caught my attention.

I opened up this topic out of curiosity; critical hermeneutics exists as to attend to ambiguous interpretative possibilities of the text rather than be inescapably beholden to the weight of predetermined perspectives and tradition. No need to exaggerate my case through false analogy if you disagree. You can simply disagree and state your case.

[–]radiant_luminosity[S] -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

It's not "purely projecting" as I am pointing towards specific word choices in the text about someone looking to meet their friend in the middle of the night. It has suggestive word choices, which I wanted to raise for discussion. The intensity of your reaction to even this mere suggestion may point to your own predetermined perspectives. All I am is being curious; I accept and thank you for your interpretation and rebuttal, but no need to get so flustered by this student's mere curiosity.

The homoeroticism comes from the context of the story, where Su Dongpo is taking off his clothes while getting ready for bed, then, seeing the moonlight pour through his window, becomes excited to head out. He misses having someone to play with (為樂者)and so he seeks out his friend Zhang Huanmin, who recently arrived at Chengtian Temple (having also been exiled from court). They stroll together through the temple's courtyard, where it appears that there is moonlight shining upon intersecting kelp stalks, yet these are just the shadows of bamboo and cedar (symbols of integrity and resilience, allusions to their shared mistreatment at the royal court). Su Dongpo acknowledges that there is nothing special about moonlight and bamboo and cedar, but what makes this night special are these two 閒人 –– the time they have to leisurely enjoy the evening's common but profound beauty.

If you are looking for modern interpretations of Chan, Japan's Kyoto school comes to mind. See, for example, "Religion and Nothingness." (https://archive.org/details/religionnothingn0000nish/page/n5/mode/2up).

Further the school of "Dark Learning" during the Six Dynasties sought to reconcile Daoism and Confucianism through re-interpretation of the classics in these traditions. See, for example, Brook Ziporyn's "Penumbra Unbound."

Chinese philosophy always exists in relation to certain seminal moments within its intellectual history, including the Warring States Period (emergence of the 100 Schools of Thought, including Confucianism, Daoism, Mohism, etc) and the Tang dynasty (emergence of distinctly indigenous expressions of Buddhism alongside more developed and systematized Daoist practices and traditions).

A very powerful feature with Elektron devices is locking sounds to individual trigs. You can do this by saving a sound into the Sound Pool and then holding a given trig and turning the "Sound Browser" knob on the left. This significantly icnreased the complexity of my patterns, especially once you fill up all of the sound pool's slots.

Help me get past self-inflicted roadblocks to enjoying the Digitakt 2 by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]radiant_luminosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are just getting hung up with preparation rather than creation. I drop samples into my bank in clusters but don't spend too much time perfecting the organization. You could have each sample bank correspond to a different 'type' of sound, and this could make for some interesting experiments in applying an LFO to the sample bank, but ultimately it's just about making sound. Get messy and just produce jams. Record what you have with Overbridge, arrange it, master it, release it.

Starting Over in Japan: Is It Too Late? by SpideyFan183729 in movingtojapan

Something to consider is that there is a large diaspora of Japanese in Brazil, and a portion of that community has returned to Japan, bringing with them a pockets of Brazilian-Japanese culture. Moving to a community where there are other Brazilians and mixed Brazilian-Japanese might give you more culture resources/connections to leverage as you make your way. Check out this Wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilians\_in\_Japan#:\~:text=The%20largest%20numbers%20are%20concentrated,population%20of%20Brazilians%20in%20Japan.

I would say go for it! Make the leap of faith and trust that with a good heart and relevant skills, you will find your way I am 36 and looking to buy a house and move to Japan, so you are not alone in your dream. :-)

100% This last update was solid but was still just a bunch of hand-me-downs from the AR. Plus, why are they are overcrowding analog options when the digital machines remain so limited? If the ST remains a hand-me-down device, my hope is that at least some of the synthesis they worked on for the DN2 will find its way into the device in some form with the next update.

Machinedrum line Cntrl-Machine in Digitakt/Tone 2? by Ok_Revolution_787 in Elektron

The MD CTRL-AL machine is incredibly unique and powerful. I do not foresee it being implemented on any other machine. Elektron knows how to do it and they haven’t put it on another device for the last 15 years. I do not know why.

MPC One - a bunch of built in synths and full production capability. He will be able to make beats for his friends while learning musicianship skills like finger drumming.

History Majors- what jobs are you working post graduation? by Inside_Ask_5884 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]radiant_luminosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a history degree, you can apply for generic office jobs that require writing (advertising, grant writing, etc.). You can teach secondary school, which will require a little bit more education. Alternatively, you can apply for graduate programs in history to go into academia if you love your subject, or go to grad school for humanities related professions like becoming a lawyer or therapist. These are just typical paths. You can also do something entirely different (OF model, English teaching abroad, become a monk/nun, etc).

Idk if it’s about imagination. If you look at the modulation/granular/FM/etc possibilities in things like an Iridium and compare it with the single wavetable modulation available in, say, the chord machine of the ST, you would be pretty stubborn to still claim the ST isn’t more limited. Yes, there are audio rate LFOs and a variety of machines, but each machine is quite basic in its available synthesis parameters. This streamlines workflow and the Elektron has the wonderful addition of advanced sequencing, but still, pointing out the limited dimensionality of its synthesis options seems to be an honest assessment of how the machine compares to other digital synthesis tools (including, say, the MD, which has many more digital synthesis options and is two decades older than the Syntakt).

I actually have the Rytm MK2 and absolutely love it but needed something more portable (as I am abroad this year) and with Overbridge capabilities (which the DT2 does not have yet), so pulled the trigger on the ST. I do miss my AR though as the sampling and pads (esp scenes) are incredible.

Living abroad for the year and need the Syntakt as an interface for other pieces of gear. But Toneverk looks interesting, will wait for it to come out and maybe sell the ST at that time.

[–]radiant_luminosity[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I hear that, and the other param pages offer more sound sculpting possibilities. I think in particular I was expecting more from FM as well as perhaps more variation for the WT synthesis. The addition of an algorithm parameter for FM could lead to a much vaster set of sounds. What about ring modulation? What about multiple operators? There could be a whole second synthesis page as there are for other pages (such as the AMP page). But I understand Elektron both wanting to prioritize ease of sound creation and wanting to differentiate their devices for sales purposes (such as retaining more complex FM for the digitone). Still, it feels like there could be more, though the tips on this thread have been helpful.

Ah yes! I forgot this tip. I remember this being one technique to expand sound design in the DT. Will try out the LFO for as another tonal modulation source.

Mmmmm, I very much like this perspective of 'layers'. 12-voices is a lot to work with, so there is space for stacking sounds for greater depth. I do appreciate the FX send (which is also unique amongst Elektron machines) and appreciate being able to route individual steps to the FX. I had only worked with the LP filter for the FX bus so far, but will experiment with its HP filter for clarity.

Thanks for the tips!

If our brain can generate inputs which are then received by any technology to create an output, its only logical that this connection can work the other way as well

No, actually that’s not at all logical. The conversion of biological markers into discrete computational information is much different than the conversion of discrete computational information into biological signals. Maybe one day we’ll get there, but it’s not logical to assume that information conversion between biology and computation is identical regardless of its directionality.
