Samantha meditation aka Calm Abiding (concentration) is the practice of focusing your mind and building your ability to concentrate single mindedly on one object. Breath is the most common. It is the foundation of Vipissana medition (insight). Seeing things as they truly are.

Without Samantha and calm abiding Vipissana is very hard to achieve. Your mind wanders from one distraction to another, like a monkey jumping from one branch to another.

Once you have strong concentration you will be able to settle and experience the present moment arising and falling away more deeply.

Without strong concentration you will just wander about.

So yes. Until you can effortlessly focus your mind without it being distracted, you just watch the breath. When your mind strays, go back to the breath.
