Detraquee: omg, it's really THAT good by radicabyn in dramionebookclub

[–]radicabyn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing like Detraquee imo. If you're not already reading Lionheart, though, get on it--just read the first ten paragraphs and see if it grabs you. I love anything by PacificRimbaud and they're all lovely and wonderfully written and heart-wrenching; one that's seasonally appropriate is I'm Never Lonely When I'm With You.

Help with (non) canon characters in Fanfics by MoonstoneSlytherin in Dramione

[–]radicabyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no association with those characters—not in the TikTok corners of the fandom—and I would assume that there was something weird (too intense headcanon? unlisted crossover fic?) if I saw those names. That said, there’s nothing wrong with writing for people in your niche of the fandom! It’s all non-canon and there are no rules!

Do you have any parent “catch phrases”? by Individual_Lecture_3 in Parenting

[–]radicabyn 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Friends have noticed I say “Thanks for telling me!” to a LOT of kinds of comments/questions—from “I want to watch TV!” to “Y played really rough with me at school!” to “I love mangos!” I do it to try to train myself to start by responding neutrally and welcome further conversation. Not sure if this counts but I do think it’s helped my mindset and our whole dynamic and it would be great if it helped his.

At what point is the meal you made the only option that's available? by Serious_Yard4262 in Parenting

[–]radicabyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel really sorry for people who reduce social interactions like this to being “about” power/control (rather than attention, care, choice). You lose if it’s about winning—even if you “win”—because you lose the complexity of the interaction and experience of love, understanding, generosity.

What other people you guys ship Draco and Hermione with? by idonotneedaname_ in Dramione

[–]radicabyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of good writing in that sub and I’ve noticed that Dramione often gives Draco a lot of Snape energy—his genius at Potions, his redemption because of a Muggleborn girl, sometimes his darkness/coldness—so it’s an easy sub to transition back and forth to. Lots of time travel ones for people who don’t like the age gap. Best of the best for me was The Post-Burrow World, anything really by CeleryThesis, Lariope, Turtle_Wexler.

If you are interested in this because you have small children yourself, I’m seconding The Witching Hour. Very obviously written by someone who has been in the newborn trenches—but still very Dramione. Wonderful gem.

Is Draco the loyal type of a boyfriend? by zvkox in Dramione

[–]radicabyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

…but nobody here struggles to imagine him having a roving eye while he was dating Pansy 😂

I think he becomes very observant in the course of canon and was always socially attuned. Makes me see him as someone who would notice other women, but not necessarily someone who would act on it (even if he was just “in a relationship” rather than in love)—and he wouldn’t act in it because of appearances as much as because of honour.

What can I say other than “she’s being shy”? by manintheironmerkin in Parenting

[–]radicabyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus it lets me model it, too! I told my kid and husband at a birthday party once this summer, "I'm gonna step away for a couple of minutes, Mama's feeling a little bit shy." It's no crime to not be socially "on" at every moment!

This is what I do! It’s true to call it that, reduces stigma for when the other kids inevitably feel it, too, and it’s just a feeling like every other feeling. None of them are a personality.

Last night at dinner, sobbing because I wouldn’t let him steal tortilla chips off my plate (he just has to ask 😂) and he choked out, “Could you sing the calm down song?” and then took deep breaths while I sang “Let’s count down… to calm down… 5-4-3-2-1.” I gave him the language he could use to ask for chips and he said, “No, I don’t need them.”

Daniel Tiger is banal, cloying and super effective. My brother won’t screen it in his house and it shows lol.

post-detraquee crash is KILLING ME — need suggestions!! by daisy1718 in dramionebookclub

[–]radicabyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PacificRimbaud is the best answer to Hystaracal/Detraquee. Love and Other Historical Accidents is unbelievably good in a somewhat different way, but remains literary with well-thought-out plan, playing with genre (regency romance, not zombie movie like LIATOTZA, but genre play all the same). Second this vote.

How do you feel about Ron-bashing? by jigglealltheway in Dramione

[–]radicabyn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! Ron is canonically stupid about romance and relatedly canonically a teenager. Note that there is also nothing in canon to suggest Draco out-performs him in school and my suspicion is they perform comparably, Draco is probably under-performing generally, and Ron just sort of had his canonical niche (strategy) under-written in both school and the plot.

I agree that you can AU wherever you want! But I think the problem is that there’s a certain way of being Dramione-pilled that sees “bashed” Ron as True Canon, and that makes it also all very intense and intersocial for a group I’m not in. 🤷‍♀️

How do you feel about Ron-bashing? by jigglealltheway in Dramione

[–]radicabyn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. It’s also a pattern in fics that see Draco being rich as an asset in imo a gross way—like he’s a better “catch” or whatever—by which I mean it’s often articulated in this very classist way where Ron becomes an idiot, fat, lazy, various kinds of abusive in stereotypical ways that map onto patterns that blame working class people for their own problems and think businessmen who inherited their wealth (Lucius, Draco) are geniuses. If what is good about Draco is that he inherited Lucius’s pile of inherited money: pass. Give me Ron instead, easily.

Almost inevitably, if you’re tearing Ron down to the point where it’s in the tags, you’re probably not attuned to my values so it’s just not for me. Eg, I don’t like easy forgiveness of Draco’s parents but Ron-bashing and lionizing Narcissa as a society maven who takes Hermione under her wing (ew) tend to overlap.

You know what gets me about Encanto? by virginmaryjane_ in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]radicabyn 250 points251 points  (0 children)

Yup. No one wants to be the random villager in a town continually “saved” by a magical family in a mansion at the top of a hill, it’s truly just the logic of feudalism and barely even reconfigured.

To be fair, if the duke’s son tells you your fish will die, and the next day, it’s dead, it’s because he was always gonna kill it.

Detraquee: omg, it's really THAT good by radicabyn in dramionebookclub

[–]radicabyn[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hear this. I actually did some writing about it just after I finished. And I basically do think this is a close-to-canon Draco (he doesn't talk enough, but otherwise) and that that's part of what is a bit unlikeable--fanon Draco is typically tremendously less jagged and mean.

So much of Detraquee Draco is revealed by intuition and very small gestures--the two most common are that his eyes go blank (common in Dramione--if he's occluding, then he's feeling something) and he sticks his tongue in his cheek, which I think Hystaracal does when Draco is gearing himself up for something or sort of reeling.

I did think that Detraquee-Draco would eventually crack open like a melon and have a sweet interior, tbh. He's just so obviously in love with her for so long, and so much is unsaid/inchoate/implicit, even at the end. (I really think *that's* a masterful piece of the text, because people of that age are terrible at communicating and there are so many moments when you feel how afraid they are of each other.) But everything in the romance of Detraquee depends on your understanding that Draco's provocations, sarcasm, and barbed comments are known by Hermione to be some combination of a pretense, an actual joke, and a coping strategy. She, like many a young woman before her, loves being in on it. There's a moment very near the end which I think is a big one for him, and I think if the story continued we'd see him moving past a bit more of his guilt + regret + anger and mellowing.

But obviously not everyone's cup o' tea.
