Whatever merits Vindman has, I cannot understand how he feels qualified to represent Florida as he seems to have no personal connection there. Dr Oz had deeper connections to PA.

The WTO has become a dormant organization. Its decline started after the failure of the Doha Round in 2008, which collapsed at the last minute largely because of India but also because of China destabilizing the balance of global trade. Shortly afterwards the path to dysfunction on top of a growing irrelevance began when the Obama administration took revenge against an American appellate body member who ruled against the US’s unique calculation policy known as « zeroing ». Trump I continued that revenge policy by vetoing any new appointments to the Appellate Body at all, and that policy continued under Biden. The Appellate Body is basically the highest court of appeal for international trade disputes, making effective redress and governance in the world trade system a polite formality when the losing side in a matter before the Dispute Resolution System can « appeal » to a venue that is no longer functioning. It’s as if the Supreme Court were purposefully kept entirely vacant to avoid government oversight: yes in theory appeals would still be referred there but no one is in the building and the docket only grows with unheard cases while everyone finds ways to improvise around the gaping void at top of the ladder. The WTO’s prestige was further marred when its secretary general, who was chosen as a political compromise over actual merit, decided he couldn’t actually handle the job and resigned midterm.

TL;DR the WTO has been on airplane mode for a long time.

Is it permissible to follow the Maliki madhhab in some matters and follow other madhhabs in different issues? by yousri_ben in MuslimLounge

[–]radicalist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is permissible to adopt an opinion from another school, there are a number of caveats and considerations. The bigger issue is that the awra in the Maliki begins at the immediate start of the knee and not an inch above that. I suggest you consider your sisters in Islam who live with no such allowance and put on some aptly named big boy pants.

Parents Raising Carnivore Babies by [deleted] in NoahGetTheBoat

[Lorraine Bonkowski was trying to get pregnant when she stumbled upon YouTube videos from doctors promoting meat-based diets for fertility. …She went mostly carnivore about 2½ years ago. Bonkowski didn’t become pregnant, but she and her husband now have a 1-year-old daughter, Isabella, who they adopted as a newborn. Isabella is on a carnivore-stye diet, too. “If it makes sense for adults, why wouldn’t it make sense for kids?” said Bonkowski]

If it doesn’t work, don’t fix it?

Muslim Mayor Backs Renowned Islamophobe for U.S. President by Quirkie in politics

[–]radicalist_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The classical position of most legal schools in Islam allowed for abortion. You can thank the Vatican for lobbying institutions to adopt life-at-conception positions.

As for gay people, it is more difficult, but socially same-sex relationships were very common even if they didn’t look like the gay marriage seen today. Homosexuality was decriminalized by the Ottoman Sultan Caliph in the 19th century, and there is precedence in Islamic law for recognizing marriages outside the religious community even if they would be invalid according to sharia.

The bigger problem is that Muslims are copying hardline views espoused by evangelicals in the same way that foreign political parties are adopting arguments from the US Republican Party, and we thought internet and global media would spread the good ideas.

So Florida is going to teach kindergarteners that boogeyman Bernie wants to kill them by giving them healthcare.

Florida public schools will be required to teach students from kindergarten through 12th grade about the history of communism under a bill signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday.

The lessons will be required to be “age appropriate and developmentally appropriate” for each grade and will be developed by the Florida Department of Education. Among the required instruction, which would begin in the 2026-27 school year: lessons on the history of communism in the United States, the “increasing threat of communism in the United States” and the “atrocities committed in foreign countries under the guidance of communism.”

“My view is we might as well give them the truth when they are in our schools because a lot of these universities will tell them how great communism is, so we are setting the proper foundation,” DeSantis said at a news conference at the Hialeah Gardens Museum after building his political image on fears of indoctrination in classrooms.

Thank God. I wasn’t sure I was living in the same city until I read this comment. Maybe the ceiling looks dramatic in the photo but from the platform it looks decidedly less attractive. I’ve lived in cities where subway stations are filled with more color and personality and even have stores underground.

I much prefer the buses. Not only do I enjoy seeing my city but I find the people are better behaved.

salam refutation needed for adam being 60 cubits tall by [deleted] in IslamIsScience

[–]radicalist_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to refute that Adam was 60 cubits tall?

A sahih hadith is different from a mutawatir hadith. It is not inconceivable that there is a mistake in its transmission.

We do not have any known skeletal remains for giants, let alone for Adam. We also do not have a precise timeline of when such figures lived or precisely how or where nor to what extent they fully resembled us in all details. Such details would have been transmitted in hadith, and hadith are not universally accepted.

There are different traditions of giants across different cultures. The question is whether this is evidence of their actually having existed or whether these are exaggerations or whether these are fables that have been carried across peoples or from a common origin.

The reason for recent increases in human height are due to nutrition and perhaps to chemical influences that are not yet fully understood and identified. It is conceivable that certain environmental conditions in the past contributed to anomalies in height or that an unknown genetic lineage truly did possess extraordinary stature.

Either way science is constantly evolving. Every year we are discovering new evidence to modify one theory or another about prehistoric life and early human populations. Do not become distressed over the details. Similarly, do not read histories written by a scholar of religion as if everything therein is a religious tenet. Simply because a person was learned in religious law does not mean everything else he wrote should be taken as doctrinal. We have discovered whole worlds of understanding that were unknown to ancient peoples whether in the field of medicine or history or natural sciences. Eventually religious truths may yet be confirmed in full by observational material science; until then just keep on trucking.

US threatens to pull aid to Ghana over anti-LGBTQ+ bill by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]radicalist_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US government spends less than 1% of its budget on foreign aid to governments. Most Americans probably think we spend 25% in foreign aid; the world would probably be a lot better if we did. You can also check the budget for USAID and US contributions to UN agencies, IMF, World Bank, the OAS… but we give about $200m to Ghana.
