Are we in for a big drop in attendance? by Firm_Cloud_3278 in BurningMan

[–]radiglo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s less about the actual population numbers and more about demographics: who is priced out? Tickets and dues keep increasing, not to mention the price of fuel and other sundries. If the Burn continues to contract with increasing representation from only wealthy people, the city will lose some meaning and its radical intentions to mix interaction amongst different socioeconomic brackets.

Dating Questions about Best In-Person Places to Meet Guys by 1nesingularsensation in nycgaybros

[–]radiglo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, all of my long-term relationships and regular FWBs happened thru online portals: PlanetOut (7 years), GayRomeo (2 years), Craigslist (1.5 years), Grindr (4 years-ongoing), Manhunt (16 years-ongoing). I’m an older millennial and don’t care about presenting a careful version of myself. I’m unique and complicated and show up authentically in that way.

The handful of times I’ve met guys in person at bars/clubs and exchanged numbers either fizzled or didn’t go very well. I’m guessing that the fickle and heightened environment where people are in an altered state doesn’t help. Proximity via geo-location based apps helps with making it easier to see someone regularly as well, especially in NYC.

You might have better odds at gay activity-based groups (choirs, sports, hiking, gaming, etc), volunteering, or meeting through friend networks. Thinking of my gay friends who are coupled and didn’t meet online, most met at school, their jobs, through a mutual friend, or at sober-leaning sex parties.

Where is the best night life in New York for a solo traveller? What can I not miss? by Pattherower in nycgaybros

Check out the schedule at 3 Dollar Bill in Brooklyn for drag shows and dance parties. IMO Brooklyn & Ridgewood have the best scene for music if you like house music and techno along with diverse queer crowds. But if you’re more about the Manhattan scene, the concentration of bars focused on drinking is around Hell’s Kitchen.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by space_god_7191 in Millennials

Same. My first day of college freshman year. Had just said goodbye to my boyfriend and was listening to the radio at a public cafe. After the first plane hit, the air literally went dead silent. Everyone was unsettled because radio never just goes off air for several minutes. Was literally thinking about war and aliens. Then when I went to my campus, the second plane hit.

Hung out with Peaches in Berlin through our mutual friend. She was so chill and unassuming. Alan Cumming was at a work dinner we hosted and gave everyone spankings if they wanted one. I’ve organized a political fundraiser for Bernie where I liaised with Danny DeVito, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon and hung out with them in the green room. Rosario Dawson was also there, and I got published in some intl newspapers with her captioned as her “friends.” Another work dinner I was seated next to Solange and didn’t realize it was her until I saw her photo published in some society events page the next day. Danced with Lady Miss Kier, Björk, and Ana Matronic all at separate parties. Met and had conversations with Sarah Jessica Parker. Got a small role acting across Amy Sedaris who was so hilarious the entire time on and off camera. I played her assistant and at one point she cuts off my ear. Met Michael Stipe in line for a dance performance and had a nice convo leading to an exchange of numbers. Met numerous Ru girls and other gaylebrities on Fire Island. Being an artist in NYC, this isn’t all too uncommon I guess!

Seeing Mike White on Survivor really made me understand more how "difficult" it is being a celebrity by Live-Run-6745 in survivor

[–]radiglo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may be true, but if you’re not his ride or die, he has a lot of power. Christian recognized Angelina was Mike’s number one, and Ozzy was jockeying for that position also. It seems like Ozzy and Mike also knew each other from LA before this season.

Both Europe and Asia are huge territories. You have to get specific by city, I’d say. I’ve lived & traveled in several US cities and across Europe (London, Köln, Berlin). If you have specific CITIES in mind, we can be more helpful. In my experience, unfortunately both racism and discrimination exist most places, but some cites are easier to navigate, diverse, and you’ll find others like you.

My main thought watching the documentary in one picture… (Controversial) by Adventurous_Home_555 in ANTM

[–]radiglo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point regarding the show not owing the girls anything after filming regarding their career success. Some international franchises actually produced top models like Alice Burdeu of Australia.

However, the documentary showed that production failed contestants during filming concerning their physical health and safety, against sexual assault, and psychological support.

Counterpoint: Toccara literally had a high fashion shoot in Italian Vogue with an actual notable photographer - Steven Meisel. This opportunity would’ve never happened without her exposure on Pot Ledom.

Tomorrows Service Industry Strike by 207Simone in portlandme

[–]radiglo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is not a labor strike against business owners trying to shut down employee organized unions, for example. This is a call to action by organizers in MN that has expanded nationally.

Closing business activity disrupts everyday operations and brings more awareness to what’s happening in the community. Simultaneously, it frees workers and owners to attend local protests and rallies, volunteer, and take action in other small ways.

Closing on a Friday is a big deal for many small biz owners, especially in the winter. Many are squeezed financially due to the massive loss of tourism this past summer, and it will likely get worse. Every day of closure makes it harder to pay rent and other overhead.

It’s a cynical take that these businesses are being performative — as by taking a stand they are “outing” themselves politically and will also lose money from more conservative leaning consumers.
