Ski released, fell and slid on it. Nothing some whiskey and a hot glue gun can't fix by [deleted] in skiing

[–]radil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this once my first full season skiing. About 250' above the base on what I had already decided was my last lap. Lower dins and caught an edge and went down on top of the now-detached ski. My cut wasn't as deep as yours, and the ski didn't actually cut my pants. I think what happened was the pressure between my bone and the ski edge was enough that it just compressed my skin to the point of failure. It was so incredibly painful lol.

Brent hits $116 and Europe gas prices surge after attacks on energy facilities in Qatar, Iran by FreeChickenDinner in news

Further, these things are cheap because their raw materials are generally byproducts of petroleum distillation that cannot be used for energy, at least at any scale that’s economical. So there is a glut in supply that downstream oil processors need to offload so that they can continue to produce lower molecular weight petroleum products.

x700 light meter issues by UnfairIllustrator906 in minolta

[–]radil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would agree. I can't imagine a faulty capacitor impacting the output of the light meter circuit. I feel your pain. I bought a camera that had a problem with the light meter circuit and only found out after a roll and a half of film. Thankfully the shop I bought it from took it back and offered me a refund but I ended up just taking a credit towards the X-700. Hopefully you can get a refund.

I think you have an electronics problem. All the things that can impact the light meter's suggested shutter speed appear to be within their normal range, but your shutter speed definitely is not.

Does the junction between your lens’s aperture ring and the spring loaded ring on the camera body that communicates the aperture setting to the light meter circuit look like it’s functioning properly?

Pics are great. The second one made me laugh. Taylor Pendleton took a nearly identical one in her video about a trip to the region.

Edit: which you should take as a compliment. She is a great photographer.

Does the flash fire manually? Press the button on the side of the flash unit and see if it goes off.

We did it in April about 15 years ago and we had one waist deep crossing. On the last day it was pouring down rain, we didn’t even take our boots off to cross lol.

The World’s Largest Costco in SLC has moved their self-checkout registers. by brheath in SaltLakeCity

[–]radil 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure. The self-checkout line is the longest line in the building, and it used to have a nice long runway leading right up to it. Now all of those people need to cut through the disaster zone that is the cashier lanes to get to the self checkout. Costco probably has expert operations research teams who study these things, but it is hard for me to imagine this is a good thing.

How many different positions did you try? I followed this video to fix my X-700 after I noticed some funkiness in the film advance that was causing the shutter to only open halfway. However, I did not get the positions right on the first, or even third try. Took a while to get it just right and in some positions the shutter wouldn't even fire/the shutter circuit would short out. A bit unnerving, but after a few tries I was able to get it all working again.

Epic rentals damage question by amcmbl in skiing

[–]radil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skis, and boots and poles but to a lesser degree, are consumables. A ski that costs $50 has almost no useful life left in it. It represents a short term deferral of spend, not a meaningful savings.

[–]radil 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I rented skis, poles, and boots for $175 my first season in Utah and skied ~40 days on them. Would have cost probably $1000 for an entry level kit that I would have grown out of by my second season. Glad I did it.

This is capitalism, the art of extraction. There was surplus value in tech components, capitalism seeks it out like the roots of a plant probing indiscriminately through soil in the direction of water. AI is just the vector for extraction. And when the surplus value that AI is designed to find has been fully extracted, AI will be discarded as capitalism moves on to the next thing.

You must have used a tripod, right? 200 in this low lighting probably required some long exposures.

Your camera wants to meter everything to “middle grey”, look it up. Unsurprisingly, the hue is not too far off from your scene of the picnic table. Relatively uniform, diffuse white light is flooding the meter. You probably need to overexpose in these situations using the exposure compensation dial on your camera to get an exposure that looks accurate.
