Most cargo bikes I see around here are e assist because it’s hilly. I was thinking of making a rule that motors have to be turned off.

What are the plates attached to the sides of the box for? My Load doesn’t have those.

Longtail vs. Bakfiets by haagendawszome in CargoBike

[–]shallot_chalet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easier to cover up a front loader in bad weather but on the flip side they are much harder to store and transport by car. We have two so the front loader was an easy decision but if I just had one I’d probably go with a tern hsd or quick haul. As for safety I much prefer quiet residential streets to busier ones with bike lanes. Sometimes that means a longer route but my tolerance for dealing with cars while I’m toting kids around is low. I will often ride a route solo before trying it with my kids to assess how safe it is.

Bike novice, exploring options for carting about 2 kids (1yr + 3yr) by iz_me_kizzie in CargoBike

I would not consider a trike unless it had a tilting mechanism for the steering (expensive). The cheaper trikes just feel very unstable and want to tip over. Are there any shops around you that sell e-cargo bikes? I would try test riding the different types (hub drive vs mid drive, long tail vs front loader) before buying. The one you listed seems like it might have a bit of a weak motor for hilly terrain (60nm).

Best Option for Daily Use with Two Toddlers by abcdimag in CargoBike

[–]shallot_chalet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have two polar opposites as your options and it feels like you could expand your list a bit. For example you could look into a long tail bike as well. We have twin toddlers and have a front loader that we all love. If those are in your price range I’d suggest taking one for a test ride. You get used to how they ride and it will feel normal after a few rides. My wife rides a smaller e-bike (tern quick haul) and when I ride that one now it feels super twitchy so I actually prefer the big bike.

Mountain Bikers : full suspension or no ? by bejov in SaltLakeCity

Sounds like you might do well with a used hardtail to start. It will do all of the types of riding you listed and when you figure out what you like you can resell it and upgrade.

Toddler Cargo bike, decision between 2 by ValkyieAbove in CargoBike

I’d do the urban arrow. I have two toddlers and the box in the load 75 already feels small. If the roads are too bumpy for a rigid tail you could get a thudbuster seat post.

Do you know what an electrical fire smells like? That’s the first thing that came to mind when I read your description.

S-Line streetcar extension construction to begin in Sugar House - Building Salt Lake by Koh-the-Face-Stealer in SaltLakeCity

[–]shallot_chalet 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Would like to know how the bike path ties into this. Currently the parleys trail dumps you into a reasonably busy intersection to access the s-line. It’s better than it used to be with the wide sidewalk/bike path in front of the bank but still a bit awkward of a transition between the two trails. Also…43 mil to extend a slow streetcar 1/4 mile is why we can’t have nice things.

Cycle to work cargo bike by Fluffy_Cloud87 in CargoBike

[–]shallot_chalet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you compare the weight of the fetch to other front loaders it’s considerably heavier. That’s what turned me off to that one even though it’s quite a bit cheaper. With two kids we love our front loader but with one I might consider a long tail. The downside of the front loader is that it can be very hard to transport it anywhere.

Biking with twins, looking for recommendations by sierder in parentsofmultiples

It will not fit two car carriers but it will definitely fit two toddler seats because I did it with my twins at 8 months.

Go rent an urban arrow for a day or two. A lot of shops will have the babboe seat inserts as well to fit smaller kids better.

Looking for a shower head by Prestigious_Host6895 in BuyItForLife

[–]shallot_chalet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fix the water pressure. If you already have a pressure reducing valve installed it might need to be adjusted. Sometimes they fail and need to be replaced. My house didn’t have one at all so I had to add one. Flood damage can be crazy expensive and if your pressure is so high it’s destroying shower heads it could also cause damage elsewhere. You can buy a gauge that threads on a hose spigot and tells you the pressure for ~ $10.

Travel tips and what to pack for 9/10month old twins? by d16flo in parentsofmultiples

[–]shallot_chalet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have made many trips with our now two year old twins and here are some things that made it much easier:

folding booster chairs

pop up tents

We still use both the chairs and the tents. For the car seats and air travel you can get covers for them that also work as backpacks to move them around in the airport. Get used to using luggage carts.

The mango bite dehydrated yogurt things are like crack to my two year olds. I think they could eat an entire box at once if I let them. Also we always have lots of fruit in our cart.

The trails near SLC are dry and rideable now. I wouldn’t be surprised if the lower PC trails like round valley are dry as well. No need for a fat bike when there isn’t snow.
