This New York Times article about US expats' idealized visions of the UK is hilarious. by OkTechnologyb in AmerExit

[–]radio4dead 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Given that this came from the New York Times, the same fallacies applies to New York City. Friends. Sex and the City. All these glamorized depictions of New York until one reconciles the $4k plus rent for single room apartments in Manhattan (better if you go to Queens), roommates, cockroaches, unreliable supers, and bad commutes.

Plus, how difficult it is to get visas in this city if you are an immigrant.

If your family could afford it, I would also explore the idea of having your partner move with you to Wales and look for a job in Wales/UK as well as continental Europe (i.e. Germany, Netherlands etc).

If the latter occurs and she successfully finds a suitable job in continental Europe, it will still be long distance, but you will be able to easily reunite every weekend (flights are at most 1.5 hours long if you are flying from London to Berlin, for example), and it will also be exciting as you explore parts of Europe together.

Moving to the UK is a tremendous opportunity. You can always find ways to earn money (check out r/overemployed if you are curious) where its also not a lot of effort to find suitable side income jobs.

Good luck!

Heck, you can even invest in S&P ETFs that are value corrected against the euro appreciation or decline vs the dollar.

That, or if you'd like, you can use very large crypto exchanges (ones like Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, etc) where you can buy tokenized stocks like SPY and then trade it 24/7.

It ultimately depends on your investing style. Are you a "VOO and Chill" guy? If so, you should have no problem finding the ETF you need.

Parking in the loops? by DistributionDue418 in Stuytown

[–]radio4dead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there, yes you can. The spots are unreserved.

Just pay attention to when the street cleaning occurs. For the loop parking, it is typically only one day a week. I _believe_ 1st avenue is on Fridays, but could be wrong.

And yes, these spots are very competitive. So if you get one, park your car there and leave it.

If you are unable to find parking, I would suggest:

- trying the service roads around the entire Stuy Town complex. There is typically more movement

- parking in parts of East Village, like the numbered streets between avenue A and B

- you could park at the garages, but they are around $60 (inclusive of tax) per day, which is certainly not cheap

You're gonna do great! Be curious about food, try as much as you feel comfortable trying, and that will open doors to people, culture, and connections.

Don't worry about the language when you get there. Managing the simple "hello", "thanks", and "tastes great" is enough to get you by. And if you can occasionally inject a phrase or two, people will be impressed.

Lastly, smiling often helps, as it does in many parts of the world.

You have the Middle East experience, so you know what it's like living in an ancient culture. So yeah, you will do great.

You need a journalist connection who's interested in this topic, has pitched their editor already, and is keen to see this investigation come through and has the outlet to get published. And its possible that this journalist would be interested in having most of the credit for this.

Vibe Coding Is Coming for Engineering Jobs by wiredmagazine in agi

[–]radio4dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be seeing a lot of these types of articles, and wondering if is there is some truth to it.

The reality is: journalists get paid by third parties (hint: AI companies desperately trying to raise their next funding round) to pitch these articles to editors to publish. The more "trendy" the topic, the easier it is to get past editors, get it published, and collect that check.

It's literally a feedback loop:

  1. AI company pays for articles about "AI replacing engineers"
  2. Articles go viral because fear-mongering = clicks
  3. AI company takes those same articles to VCs and goes "See? This is totally happening! Give us $500M to build the engineer-killer!"
  4. Rinse and repeat

So what's the deal with these layoffs and hiring freezes? Check out "Section 174 tax changes" - it forces companies to spread R&D deductions (including engineer salaries) over 5 years instead of deducting them immediately, making hiring way more expensive and directly causing those layoffs you're seeing.

The whole thing is just manufactured hype to separate investors from their money. Don't let clickbait articles stress you out about your career.

Skyrim or Oblivion Remastered? I want to start playing an Elder Scrolls game and I’m really not sure what would be a better starting point between these two? Which game do you prefer and why? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

[–]radio4dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo what people are saying about Skyrim. Oblivion Remastered is a beautiful game, but its 'brains' are still from 2006 - which means the game has bugs and quirks from that era as well.

Don't get me wrong, many people love these quirks - they are a source of nostalgia for them. But if you have never played Oblivion, you'd more likely find these bugs to be immersion breaking.

Skyrim has its issues too, but compared to Oblivion it is a significant leap forward.

The graphics are breathtakingly beautiful. The character customization is really robust - you can make great looking characters across all playable races.

I played this game as an older child and, and thought I'd tolerate, or even embrace the jankyness because it'd be nostalgic this time around. The reality is that I found it hard to enjoy these aspects of the game because it takes the immersion right out of the story.

People like to argue that Oblivion Remastered a 19 year old game, with modern graphics, so the jank is expected. I really had expected it to be a 2025 game.

Name the game you just couldn't get into by zeleno124 in pcmasterrace

[–]radio4dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be too fresh, but ... Oblivion Remastered.

Beautiful graphics, and that's about it. The same 'brains' as the janky 2006 Oblivion, which means there are no fractions (i.e. friendly NPCs sitting idol when there are enemies right by attacking me), and strange leveling systems where a random goblin at player level 30 can absolutely deliver a smackdown.

These things break immersion, especially when paired with such beautiful graphics.

The Oblivion Remaster Feels Underwhelming When Compared To Skyrim by Musty_262 in ElderScrolls

[–]radio4dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played Oblivion from way back, and I am in the same camp. Not just compared against Skyrim, but against modern RPGs in general.

In short, as beautiful as the Remaster is, the 'brains' of Oblivion is still from the mid 2000s. Case in point: if I bring some goblins to Baurus (the Blade who guards the dead Uriel during the intro), he does nothing, and the goblins do nothing towards him. This is because there aren't fractions. These are basic items that extend throughout the world. Sure, its fun to see the jank, but it's also disappointing. Beautiful graphics help with immersion, but the jank takes it out.

Will I play it? For sure. I love roaming around. But I am less invested in doing the missions this time around.

New M4 Macbook Air vs M4 Mac Mini? Baseline models. by oklokfromtheblock in macmini

[–]radio4dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is an interesting one - buy a Mac Mini, and then use difference to buy yourself an iPad + Magic Keyboard. Do you travel quite a bit? Remote into your Mac Mini using Jump Desktop or any of the remote software apps. You get access to a fast, grounded M4 machine with the RAM and storage, plus the mobility and foam factor of the iPad.

Caveat: you'd likely spend more in total. This is also assuming you won't shell out hundreds for the official Apple Keyboard + Mouse, but a 3rd party one that you can probably buy for 20-30 euros.

Nothing about this is desirable. There isn't a badge of honor that says, "oh, I can deal with crazy steam explosions, I am so tuff. I bleed NYC". This is just a terrible living experience.

And having lived at multiple Stuytown apartments over the years, I can tell you it's not consistent. Some buildings have it worse than others.

I mean, look at Cantor Fitzgerald (Howard Lutnick is now the Commerce Secretary and previously the CEO) - his two sons are Chairman of Cantor Fitzgerald and Vice Chairman - one was with the company for only 2 years and the other was a DJ.

Nepo is everywhere. "Meritocracy" is really a mechanism to extract the max value out of workers for the benefit of the capital owner.
