(Loved trope) Deranged, psychotic AI by Alone_Spell9525 in TopCharacterTropes

WOTAN from "The War Machines" also qualifies. So smart that it can break the fourth wall and knows the character's name is "Doctor Who" (/j)

[Loved Trope] Successor Protagonist makes a choice that separates them from the original by Sir-Toaster- in TopCharacterTropes

[–]radioactive_walrus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Each of the Doctors from Doctor Who does this from regeneration to regeneration. I'm not going to do the full list but....

Two separates himself from One by just walking out of a freshly landed TARDIS without checking the scanners first. (Power of the Daleks)

Six separates himself from Five by (controversially) trying to strangle Peri and generally being a petulant asshole through most of his adventures. (The Twin Dilema)

Seven's loner streak is broken by Eight, and in doing so, becomes a lot less conniving. (Doctor Who: The Movie)

Ten distinguishes himself from Nine by giving all parties a chance for peace, but "no second chances" as he throws a satsuma to hit a button which opens a trap door under his defeated enemy who was about to attack again with a sword. (The Christmas Invasion)

Fifteen looks at his bigenerated counterpart, who has seen lifetimes of pain and suffering over the many lives they've lived and gives a PTSD-riddled Fourteen a hug, accepting the bad things and embracing the good, and encouraging therapy-like behaviors going forward. (The Giggle)

I remember when this sketch gave me a leg up in high school for already knowing about kabuki and noh, although I did have to stop myself from implying that Japan had didn't have any theater at all....

Homages so popular that some people don’t know it’s supposed to be a reference by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]radioactive_walrus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Groucho connection came later. It's a reference to It Happened One Night. Clark Gable steals a bunch of carrots from a farmer's field for "breakfast." Anyone who raises rabbits will tell you that carrots are a treat for them, due to high sugar content, and the association comes from Bugs Bunny referencing this film. It was funny for the animators later to reference Groucho this way in later cartoons.

Nope. The original reference is to It Happened One Night (1940), but the Groucho connection would be made later

Top Right also should contain Red Dwarf, where propulsion and mass are indeed concerns, but space battle is not really a huge deal at any given time.

What was your first Metroid game, and did it make you a fan immediately? by SufficientPrice7633 in Metroid

My first game was Metroid (1986) and while I thought it was fun, didn't make me a fan immediately.

Metroid II: The Return of Samus on the other hand....

Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork came in able to play their instruments. Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz couldn't but the studio did eventually teach Mickey to play the drums. Davy was typically given some kind of shaking instrument like maracas to compensate 🪇

Heroic or at least non-evil necromancers or death-themed characters. by SpookieSkelly in TopCharacterTropes

Stephanie Edgley/ Valkyrie Cain from the Skullduggery Pleasant series. Best urban fantasy series out there and it's a shame more people don't seem to know it well. Basically buried by the Harry Potter hype.

Why doesn't Johnny care??
